Healthy and natural dog chews

Most dogs love to chew. Chewing is such a nice behavior for dogs. It helps keep their teeth clean, fights boredom, and if you give your dog healthy dog chews, can even provide nutritional benefits.

When I’m searching for the best dog chew bones for Dexter, I follow a few personal guidelines. First, I think it’s important to remember, a dog chew bone is going to be chewed on and possibly eaten, therefore, I’m not a fan of plastic bones. Nope, not going to feed my dog plastic. Second, if it’s a processed type of dog bone and has an ingredient label, I want to read that label and ensure it’s truly something I would want Dexter to eat. As of this posting, I have not found a processed dog bone that I would feed Dexter. Let’s just take a look at one of the popular “natural” examples.

Potato Starch, Glycerin, Powdered Cellulose, Lecithin, Yeast, Malt Extract, Lupine, Annatto Extract Color, Alfalfa Extract.

Although nothing in this natural dog chew will immediately harm your dog, it’s not healthy, and starch is not a great addition to a dog’s diet. There isn’t anything healthy in this ingredient panel, so it would be like eating a king-sized candy bar. For Dexter, consuming glycerin is a short trip to having diarrhea!

Here’s another popular dental dog chew’s ingredients.

Wheat flour, wheat gluten, glycerin, gelatin, oat fiber, water, lecithin, natural poultry flavor, minerals (dicalcium phosphate, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, magnesium amino acid chelate, zinc amino acid chelate, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, manganese amino acid chelate, selenium, potassium iodide), dried apple pomace, choline chloride, fruit juice color, vitamins ( dl-alpha tocopherol acetate [source of vitamin E], vitamin B12 supplement, d-calcium pantothenate [vitamin B5], niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement [vitamin B2], vitamin D3 supplement, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride [vitamin B6], thiamine mononitrate [vitamin B1], folic acid), turmeric color.

Wow is right. That’s a lot of ingredients for one dental dog chew. And all those vitamins, they’re synthetic. So, no. I do not feed Dexter either of these dog chews, nor would I recommend them. But I do like to provide Dexter with healthy, real dog bones and chews, something I can feel good about giving Dexter and know that he can actually benefit nutritionally from eating.

Duck feet for dogs

I love giving Dexter natural duck feet for dogs. And, recently, I have introduced all natural chicken feet for dogs into his chewing rotation, and here’s why I love bird feet. 🙂

Both chicken and duck feet are a natural source of chondroitin, glucosamine and collagen. Together, this provides joint health by producing joint fluid, reduces the risk of brittle bones, improves mobility, and helps maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Chondroitin and glucosamine are beneficial to all life-stages. Recently, one of Dexter’s vets recommended I provide him with regular glucosamine and chondroitin. Instead of giving him a supplement, I have increased his consumption of duck feet, chicken feet, beef gullet, and duck necks. I rotate these various forms into his diet, to ensure the most diverse form of nutrition.

The Healthy Companion Company was kind enough to allow me to try and review both their chicken feet for dogs and duck feet for dogs. Quality ingredients is always one of my top priorities when choosing a product for Dexter. The Healthy Companion Company manufactures all their treats in the US, AND all the ingredients are sourced from US farmers. Both their chicken and duck feet come from antibiotic and hormone-free birds.

That’s it. No preservatives, or anything added. Just 100% dehydrated duck or chicken feet. Both healthy dog chews are dehydrated, which means they retain their dense nutrients. I’ve regularly given Dexter duck feet dog chews in the past, and I have to admit, these feet from The Healthy Companion Company are really nice. What I appreciate from this company is that their feet are a bit drier than the ones I’ve had before.

Healthy dog chew bones

And Dexter? He loves a good dehydrated duck foot. And the chicken feet? He gave those a green light too. Dehydrated duck and chicken feet are typically a crunchy, edible dog chew. Edible is important. Please remember to include this into his daily food calorie calculation, so that your dog does not pack on the pounds. Cutting a little of his daily food and replacing it with a duck or chicken foot is completely healthy and nutritious, so you can swap with confidence or add a bit more exercise for the day.

When giving your dog a new chew, I always recommend holding the chew and allowing your dog to chew and eat with you holding one end. This helps ensure that your dog can safely manage the chew and if not, you are able to remove it without needing to try to chase your dog down. Once you feel comfortable with how your dog will consume his snack, please still supervise.

If you are looking for natural, healthy dog bones or dog chew, I highly recommend checking out The Healthy Companion Company’s line of duck and chicken feet. 1. My dogs eat raw food, so that includes chicken feet. I do cut off the nails though. I also give them Pizzles from Logic. They are pretty crunchy so they don’t last long though. The dehydrated chicken and duck feet sound good. I would definitely try them.
