When you read this headline, National Hanging Out Day, what did you think of? I thought about hanging out with my dog. If you are like me, you are wrong! Today is a day brought to you by Project Laundry to educate consumers on the environmental benefits of air-drying laundry. According to Natural Resources Defense Council, “Today’s typical electric clothes dryer sometimes consumes as much energy per year as a new energy efficient refrigerator, clothes washer, and dishwasher combined.” That’s a lot of energy! Personally, I hang dry all my laundry besides my undies, socks, sheets and towels. However, after reading this statistic, I am thinking I should just hang all my clothes to dry. Why not?

No, I’m not going to share a picture of my laundry drying for Wordless Wednesday. I will share a photo of Dexter and myself hanging out instead. 😉

  1. I like your idea! I think we need an official ‘National Hanging Out Day With Pets.’ Mom line dries sheets, towels & some clothes. I’m not sure why humans need all that cloth. If humans were efficient like cats then they would have fur & wouldn’t need clothes to have to wash & dry! Cute pics! Mew Mew!

  2. I used to hang-dry most of my clothes and all my bed sheets – they smelled wonderful when you slipped into bed! But now I’m living in a suburb with a small lawn and nowhere to string a clothesline. I miss it! I plan on retiring to the family farm in about 10 years, and then I’ll hang out as much I can – 100 acres of freedom and lots of room for rescue pets, LOL!

  3. Super sweet picture of Dexter giving you a bath. We don’t usually get to see the tables turned. 😉 I air dry some items but not all. Living in the PNW it would be hard to dry larger items outside due to all the moister/rain. Inside would be a space issue. But I do have an extra shower curtain rod I placed towards the back of the shower to hang items on. I think it would take a long time for items like towels, jeans, sweatshirts and other thicker items to dry. But in a warmer climate maybe I’d try to do more. 🙂

  4. We don’t have a tumble dryer so I air dry all my clothes, it is definitely more energy efficient like you said! I like that photo of you two!

  5. What, you’re not going to share a photo of your unmentionables with us, Tonya!? LOL! I thought it was about hanging out w/ your dogs too, my thought was that Every day is hanging out w/ my dogs day – or it should be anyway!

  6. I air dry quite a few delicate pieces of laundry, but I do use the dryer for other things, especially in the wintertime. It’s hard to get things dry when it’s cold inside! That said, hubby and I invested in a modern dryer that uses the smallest amount of energy possible. It’s a small step, for sure. But we do hope it helps.
