Homemade Dog Ice Cream Recipe

Dexter The Dog loves his doggie ice cream! When Dexter and I are on one of our dog-friendly vacations or dog-friendly outings, we like to take a trip to a local ice cream parlor. It’s been a tradition for us for many years. Although, I only give him about 2 tablespoons of ice cream, I know this is not a healthy dog treat. In fact, typical ice cream shop’s ingredients not only include a lot of sugar and dairy, but also guar gum, polysorbate 80, and artificial flavors. That’s not good.

In the past, I’ve tried giving Dexter one of his healthy frozen treats that he loves, but during our ice cream trips, he doesn’t want anything to do with it. Nope, he wants “real” ice cream. So, I set out to make Dexter a healthy dog ice cream recipe that he would not only enjoy, but I could feel good about giving him. But would I fool the pooch?

Why, yes, I did!

His healthy dog ice cream fooled him. I did do a little routine to help with my ice cream trick. Instead of filling his hollow toy with his doggie ice cream, I place his homemade dog ice cream in a white foam cup, went to the ice cream counter, returned, then filled up his toy. Hahaha

A little background on the ingredients used in this healthy dog treat recipe. Goat milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk, and actually aids in irritable bowel disease, digestion, and diarrhea! It is loaded with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, probiotics, protein, and fatty acids. High in vitamin A, which has cancer-fighting properties. Choose an organic, raw goat milk for the best nutritional benefits. Almonds contain monounsaturated fats which have been found to help reduce the risk of heart disease. Almonds also are rich in calcium and amino acids, and also act as a laxative and lubricate intestines, making it a good choice to naturally cure constipation.

I hope you and your dog enjoy this healthy dog ice cream recipe.

Who doesn’t like pies? OK, to be honest, I’m personally more of a cake person. A rich, dark, gooey chocolate cake with caramel or raspberries would fit the bill. But, today is National Pie Day. I thought it would be a good day to share this Pomegranate and Butternut Squash Pie recipe from my book Dexter’s Delights: Fun and Healthy Treats for Dogs.

Today is Strawberry Ice Cream Day! There's no getting around it— traditional ice cream isn't the healthiest of foods. And for dogs and cats, dairy is pretty much a no-no, since a dog or cat's gut just doesn't tolerate lactose. It's not uncommon for pets to experience diarrhea, gas, or vomiting when eating dairy products. For that matter, people can also be lactose intolerant.

There are health benefits numerous health benefits of strawberries too. This energetically cooling fruit is a great source of vitamin C. It’s not just the orange foods that contain this highly coveted vitamin, the powerful strawberry does too. One medium strawberry contains 7mg of vitamin C, which is 12% of a typical person’s daily requirement. The strawberry also is a nice source of magnesium, potassium, and folate. Coming in at only 4 calories and no fat per strawberry, this berry is a healthy choice for the entire family, including the pets.

Healthy Homemade Dog Treat Recipes for Your Dogs: Dehydrated Butternut Squash

Can dogs and cats eat butternut squash? Learn some of the health benefits butternut squash for your pets and you. Bonus- Healthy butternut squash recipe dog treats. #raisingyourpetsnaturally
Health Benefits of Butternut Squash

It can be tough to find the best healthy dog treats for your favorite canine. Even searching the internet looking for healthy homemade dog treat recipes can be tricky. Sometimes you may find a recipe for ‘healthy dog treats’ and it’s filled with things like flour, sugar, or dairy. For me, this does not constitute a healthy dog treat. It may be cute, but I’m likely to keep searching.

Today it’s going to be all about the power food butternut squash, and nothing else. Like our friend the pumpkin, butternut squash is actually a fruit, not a vegetable. Fruits are the part of flowering plants that contain the seeds. The other parts such as stems, leaves and roots are considered vegetables. I know, the grocery store says otherwise, but it really doesn’t matter; both fruits and vegetables are good for us. 😉

Now what makes a butternut squash so healthy for us and our dogs and cats? A butternut squash may not look like much from the outside, but once you cut into this power fruit, you will see the bright orange meat signaling that it is high in antioxidant beta carotene, which may assist in preventing cancer and heart disease. Butternut squash is also packed with phytonutrients. Phytochemicals, or “Phyto,” are plant-based nutrients that have been shown to provide health benefits, particularly with our cell function, organs, immune system, and detoxification.

Butternut squash is low in fat and has a nice amount of dietary fiber and folate content, making this another heart-healthy treat for dogs, cats, and you! This fruit is filled with potassium, which is good for bone health, and vitamin B6, an essential vitamin for the nervous and immune system. Toss in a healthy dose of vitamin C, and you can see why butternut squash is another great super food.

So let’s get to it. Let’s use this super food to make a healthy dog treat.

For this healthy dog treat recipe, I started with 20 ounces of organic butternut squash, the meat part. You can purchase organic butternut squash already chunked up at your local health food store, in the freezer section. Or, you can carefully cut your butternut squash on a cutting board with a sharp, heavy chef's knife.

Instructions
  1. Keep the squash as stable as you can while carefully inverting your knife, and slowly push through the top of the squash. Once you have the top of your squash removed, if you have a heavy-duty vegetable peeler, you can use that to peel the skin away. If not, flip the squash over onto your cutting board with the cut side down as a base, and use your knife to remove the skin. Once the skin is removed, slice the squash in half lengthwise and remove the seeds and pulp. For this recipe you are going to use only the meat of the butternut squash.
  2. Chunk up the butternut squash into 1-inch cubes.
  3. Arrange the butternut squash on dehydrator rack and dehydrate until they are a chip consistency, about 7 hours.
  4. Place dehydrated butternut squash treats in a glass container and refrigerate for up to three days, or freeze until ready to serve.
