NY with Dogs

After our dog-friendly Vermont vacation, we decided a trip to Niagara Falls was in order. I mean, we were basically going to drive through New York to get back home. The first question was, “are dogs allowed at Niagara Falls?” I was super excited to learn this was a big yes! Okay, dog-friendly New York, here we come.

Dexter and Levi

We visited Niagara Falls USA on our way home from Vermont. Since our dog-friendly trip to Niagara Falls, New York was during the off-season and on a week day, we almost had the park to ourselves. Don’t get me wrong, there were definitely tourists and small families, but it was not busy or packed, which I really enjoyed. Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. But no outdoor concerts, festivals, or entertainment were happening during our trip, and even the eatery was closed. That was a bit disappointing.

The landscape was very nice, even though things weren’t in their spring or summer bloom. With over 400 acres of landscape, wildlife, attractions and of course, the Falls, Niagara Falls should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Niagara Falls Best Views

Niagara Falls offers some really interesting attractions such as the Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds. However, these are not dog-friendly, so we did not partake in those adventures. However, we did explore the park through the various paved paths, saw the Falls from different viewpoints, and there are lots of great water features throughout the park.

Dog-Friendly NY

There are actually two USA sides of Niagara Falls, Goat Island and Luna Island. We chose to visit Goat Island and we were glad that we did. We were able to see the rapids, Three Sisters Island, Bridal Veil Falls, and Terrapin Point. It was wheelchair, or dog stroller accessible, so it was perfect when Dexter became too tired to keep walking. After a few hours exploring the park, we headed back to our dog-friendly hotel for a little R & R before coming back for Niagara Falls Illumination.

Visit Niagara Falls at Night in the Winter

Niagara Falls Illumination is an amazing light show over the falls every evening! This special event has been impressing visitors since 1925. And impressive it was. The range of colors throughout the falls was breathtaking. I’m really disappointed I’m didn’t have better photography skills to really capture the spectacular show.

They even have a special Niagara Falls Illumination Board (NFIB) to manage this attraction. The NFIB also helps raise awareness for special causes through special Niagara Falls light show requests. That’s really a neat idea!

At the end of the dog-friendly day trip, Dexter and Levi were beat! Chris and I really wore these two Cavaliers out. If you and your dog enjoy a good adventure, I would recommend checking out Niagara Falls. It truly is a breathtaking attraction.

Lost Dog Cafe- Folly, Beach SC

When the family headed to Folly Beach, South Carolina, we knew we had to visit The Lost Dog Cafe. I mean, how could a dog adventurer like Dexter not eat at an outdoor cafe that loves dogs?! We stayed in a dog-friendly cottage in Folly Beach and were just down the road from The Lost Dog Cafe, so we checked it out on one of our first days.

This quaint dog-friendly cafe was a great, laid-back beach cafe. Affectionately referred to as “The Dog,” this pet-friendly restaurant really felt like home. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming to Dexter, and even encouraged friendly mingling. The Lost Dog Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch 7 days a week.

And the menu? The large menu offers something for everyone. Order a huge breakfast burrito, bagel sandwich, fish, wrap, salad, shrimp and grits, or my favorite, a mouthwatering cinnamon roll. You knew I would eat something sweet—I do love my sugary foods. Don’t forget about the drinks. They offer custom blends of coffee roasted specifically for The Lost Dog Cafe. If coffee isn’t your style, you can try chai tea, hot chocolate, or fresh lemonade.

During our week-long stay, we became regulars at The Dog. And just how did they come up with their name? When the owners were creating the cafe, they didn’t know what they were going to name it. Their dog, Hocus, ended up taking off and disappearing for a while. When Hocus returned and was bounding toward home, the name clicked and their logo was created. I’m obviously so happy Hocus found her way safely home.

The next time you and your dog are in Folly Beach, you need to check out The Lost Dog Cafe. And they even have a wall of dogs and gift shop!

During our dog-friendly vacation in Maryland, I knew I wanted to take Dexter on a boat ride. Dexter LOVES taking boat rides. I think there is something about the gentle rocking of the boat, the breeze in his ears and the scent of the open water that just mesmerizes Dexter.

While searching online for a dog-friendly boat cruise, I found Cruises on the Bay℠ by Watermark®. I messaged them about bringing Dexter aboard their boat, and they were very helpful and friendly in our conversations. With over 45 years of experience, this was the Annapolis dog-friendly cruise I wanted to take Dexter aboard.

Watermark’s cruises are pet-friendly as long as dogs are friendly and leashed, and the dogs cruise free of charge! The boat also had restrooms and a full bar and cruise mementos. I have to admit, I wanted to purchase a souvenir, but totally forgot.

While purchasing our ticket, the nice gentleman was telling me all about his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Everyone was very happy to see Dexter and Levi board the cruise ship. Our 40-minute narrated cruise left from the City Dock at 7 pm.

We sat on the upper deck to get the most out of our dog-friendly boat cruise. It was a sunny and warm evening, but the breeze cut down the heat and Dexter and I positioned ourselves in the shade. We learned so much of the area’s history listening to the narration while sightseeing the waterways of the Annapolis Harbor. Seeing the U.S. Navy Academy was a treat, too.

Both Dexter and his travel buddy, Levi, enjoyed smelling the fresh air and looking around. Eventually, both dogs were lulled to sleep. Dexter and I had another dog-friendly weekend trip recently. This time, our dog-friendly trip took us to the DC area. The weekend was going to be fast and furious, because our weekend trip was really about a dog behavior workshop I was presenting on fearful dogs. The folks at Your Dog’s Friend asked me to present a dog training workshop on Saturday afternoon, so that left me with Friday evening, Saturday morning and Saturday evening to tour the area with Dexter and our other friends Levi and Chris.

When I’m searching for a dog-friendly hotel, I look for five things I want in my dog-friendly accommodation.

  1. Safety
  2. Location
  3. Refrigerator
  4. Cleanliness
  5. Friendliness

When I was looking for a pet-friendly hotel in the DC/Baltimore area, I found Extended Stay America – Washington D.C. – Tysons Corner. The hotel is located at 8201 Old Courthouse Rd., Vienna, VA, which was about 15 minutes from where I was going to be presenting my workshop on fearful dogs. After reading some reviews, the hotel sounded like it would be a clean, friendly, and safe hotel to call home for the weekend.

Video walkthrough

Dexter and I have stayed at other Extended Stay America locations in the past, and have been very happy. What I really like about Extended Stays is that the hotel rooms are designed for longer stays, so are spacious and feature a substantial kitchen area with a full refrigerator/freezer, microwave, stove top, and dining and cooking utensils! This is a pretty big deal for me, since I bring Dexter’s home-cooked dog food, and sometimes even cook for him on the spot.

Dog-Friendly Extended Stay America, Vienna, VA
Large Dog-Friendly Rooms

The Extended Stay America – Washington D.C. – Tysons Corner also has an on-site guest laundry, free Wi-Fi, grab-and-go breakfast, flat-screen TVs, iron and ironing board, generous work space, and updated bathrooms. Speaking of updating, this location is in the middle of some renovations and they had just laid the hallway carpet, so there was a “new carpet” smell in the halls. This, however, did not affect my room and there was not an odor in my room.

Grab-and-go breakfast

Since Dexter and I were traveling with friends, we booked the studio suite with 2 queen beds. The studio suite was perfect for our weekend, with plenty of foot space, chairs, hanging space and drawers to more than accommodate our weekend. The hotel beds were comfortable and even included a mattress protector. I always look at my mattress to check for bed bugs or dirt. The mattress was sparkling white and crisp—just what I want to see. The inside of our room was clean and fresh, including the bathroom and kitchen.

The outside of our Extended Stay America had lots of grass for potty breaks and plenty of sidewalks around the property to choose from. There was also a small partially-enclosed courtyard for potty breaks. The hotel felt very safe and I had zero concerns walking Dexter around any part of the hotel, which was very comforting. Hotel safety is so important since I tend to travel alone and Dexter needs frequent potty breaks at various hours of the day and night.

Dog-Friendly Extended Stay America, Vienna, VA
Clean and safe

Our stay at Extended Stay America was a great experience. The hotel was nice, quiet, safe, and a great location. Our room was comfortable in every way, including the beds and bedding. The big TV had good reception, and so did the Wi-Fi. The towels were clean and the bathroom was stocked with shampoo and soap. The hotel met my five criteria of being safe and clean, in a good location, with refrigerator and friendly staff,. I would certainly stay at the Extended Stay America in Vienna, Virginia again. Dog-Friendly Duluth, MN

For those of you who have been following my dog blog, you know I HATE winter, snow, and the cold. But I love Dexter The Dog, and he loves dog adventures, no matter what the weather. My brother moved to Cotton, Minnesota, just outside of Duluth, last year. Dexter and I have not been too far west, and my step-dad wanted to try a little ice-fishing, so off we went.

Driving from Ohio to Minnesota the first weekend in March was a bit sketchy. We traveled in some scary wind and snow. Not a ton of snow, but enough snow and wind to create white-out conditions during our drive. But my step-dad is a trooper when it comes to road trips, so we did just fine. Slow and steady.

My brother lives in a small cabin in Cotton, Minnesota on Lake Elora. This was the perfect place to call home for an extended weekend. My brother and step-dad, Ed, were able to go out on the lake for daily ice-fishing. Unfortunately, they were not too successful in their catches, but they did have a great time!

Standing on Lake Superior

Throughout the weekend, we had a few dog-friendly day-trips to Duluth. Today, I want to share with you our day on the Duluth Lakewalk. This was one of our favorite days in Duluth. The Lakewalk, sometimes referred to as the Boardwalk, offers a scenic path around Lake Superior for walking, running, rollerblading, or biking. Duluth Lakewalk has a dual path to accommodate everyone. One path is paved and one is a nice boardwalk, which I found very helpful. Since Dexter cannot walk for long periods, I have to pop him in his dog stroller for rest times.

Admittedly, we did not walk the entire three-mile walk, which runs from Bayfront Park to London Road, on the northeast side of town. After all, it was cold! It was a great walk and watching the waves crush developing ice around the shorelines was breathtaking. I had to hold Dexter back because he wanted to dip his toes in Lake Superior. Sorry, Dexter—not on this trip!

No swimming today

Even though there was snow and slush around, I could tell the grounds were well-maintained, with a variety of fun sculptures and landmarks for photo opportunities. Dexter and I love our photo ops. Okay, him, not so much. The Lakewalk takes you through a variety of Duluth attractions, including the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge, Lake Superior Marine Museum, and Canal Park. The walk also provided easy access to restaurants, cafes, pubs, and restrooms, but it did not have a commercial feel—it was very pleasant and relaxing. There were also plenty of park benches and even poop stations. This made the Lakewalk a great dog-friendly park.

Fun dog photo-opportunities

The Duluth Lakewalk is such a great opportunity to access both Lake Superior and historical attractions, it’s a must-do. I am happy to say that the family will be back in July, and I can’t wait to take Dexter back to the Duluth Lakewalk!

For me, there isn’t anything better than a dog-friendly vacation with my sidekick, Dexter The Dog, unless it’s a BEACH vacation with Dexter!

Dexter and I were joined on this trip with our friends Chris and Levi The Dog. When deciding what dog-friendly vacation rental to choose, Chris was adamant about staying right on Myrtle Beach. Staying beach-side would be a new adventure for us, and Dexter was in with all four feet.

We looked on www.vrbo.com, and found a great-looking end unit called Beauty and the Beach: one bedroom, queen sofa sleeper, and bath. This unit wasn’t just on the beach—it had a direct oceanfront view with a balcony on the 10th floor. The condo was inside Ocean Park Resort, and the rental included Ocean Park’s amenities such as their fitness center, underground parking, heated indoor pool, outdoor pool and indoor/outdoor hot tub. Just FYI, these amenities are not dog-friendly. After emailing with the condo owners, I knew this would be the place for us to call home for a week.

After booking our stay, Chris and I were on pins and needles waiting for our travel day. 🙂 When the time finally came and we arrived at our condo, we were so happy and thrilled with our choice. The first thing we all did, including the dogs was to open the balcony slider and look at the spectacular ocean view. Ah, we had made a great choice!

Dog-Friendly Myrtle Beach Condo Rental

This dog-friendly oceanfront condo vacation home rental on Myrtle Beach was lovely! The unit was very spacious with large windows in the bedroom and living room, both of which had ocean views. The rental home also included a washer and dryer, two-person shower, brand new furniture, two TVs, DVD player, and new kitchen appliances. The kitchen was also fully stocked with utensils, cookware, plates, etc. Linens and housekeeping may or may not be included, depending on your package choice. There was a bit of confusion on this for us, and we received our linens late.

During our stay, the beach was dog-friendly before 10 am and after 5 pm. You better believe that we spent those hours walking up and down the beach, frolicking in the water. The water was a perfect temperature for getting our toes wet. Yes, I’m a scaredy-cat when it comes to sharks, which were actually five miles down the beach INSHORE when we were vacationing.

Dog-Friendly Beaches

Our nights were great. The hotel resort was very quiet and we didn’t hear other guests. One night, we even saw dolphins from our balcony. That was such a great experience.

We had a bit of a hiccup when checking out of our condo, due to some confusion about what services we paid for. Elliot Rental sent a checkout email stating we were to clean the unit (toilets, shower, dusting, etc.), so we obliged. It ended up that we actually had paid a departure cleaning fee. I have been assured that this fee will be refunded via check (I paid with a check, not credit card). I received our security deposit refund 15 days after our stay ended.

Even with the glitch, I would do it all over again. The four of us had a great week at our Myrtle Beach oceanfront vacation rental. This condo is truly a gem, and the views from our private balcony were breathtaking. We had a wonderful week with a lot of fun dog-friendly adventures during the day, and coming home to this condo was a blessing. I love how relaxed I felt hanging out on the balcony watching the tides come in.

Dog-Friendly Petersburg, Florida |Boat Cruise: Shell Key Shuttle

During our dog-friendly Florida vacation, we had to do a dog-friendly sunset cruise! I mean, Dexter is a total boat dog. He loves everything about boat rides. Before our trip, I saw that Shell Key Shuttle had a page on their website stating the sunset cruise was dog-friendly. I always like to confirm and check the rules, so I contacted Shell Key Shuttle and they quickly responded to my email explaining that their day trips to Shell Key were not dog-friendly because of the Audubon preserve, but they did allow dogs on their sunset/dolphin watching cruises. That was awesome news.

We called in our reservation the day of the cruise and arrived at the Merry Pier (801 Pass-A-Grille Way) half an hour before departure. When Dexter saw the dock and boat, he was very happy. I think this boy is a mind-reader and knew we were going for a pet-friendly boat ride. We checked in, then were helped aboard the shuttle. I brought water, dog treats, a dog mat, my camera and of, course Dexter. We were ready to check out some Florida dolphins, then head into the sunset.

And yes, we saw dolphins! It was so much fun to see them leaping and swimming all around. Dexter was oblivious, as he just sat back and soaked up the salt air. I think having the breeze blow through his ears and nose is heaven for him. After our residential tour, we headed toward the sunset. Wow. It was amazing.

By the end of our 1.5-hour dog-friendly sunset cruise, Dexter was asleep. I’m sure it had to do with having such an action-packed day, the ocean breeze, and smooth rock of the boat. If you find yourself in St. Petersburg, Florida, I encourage you to take your dog and the family on a sunset/dolphin cruise aboard The Shell Key Shuttle. You won’t be disappointed.

Dog-Friendly Orvis Stores

Dexter The Dog and I love visiting dog-friendly stores and we love our outdoor adventures, so the Orvis Retail Store in Manchester, Vermont was a must-see. After all, it is the Orvis flagship store. Orvis is known for their fly-fishing gear and Dexter and I snooped around at all their displays. My step-dad is a fly fisherman and I knew he would have loved all that Orvis had to offer. They even had a neat bulk fly fishing section where you can purchase and make your own flies. To top it off, Orvis offers FREE fly fishing classes. Yes, I’m thinking Vermont may need to be a do-over with my step-dad and Mom.

Dexter and Levi

After Dexter, Levi, Chris and I toured the inside of Orvis, we headed to the outside. It was time to see the trout pond that doubles as a hands-on experience during the fly fishing classes. But before stepping out, we purchased a handful of trout food to feed the trout. Dexter was thrilled and excited to see the big trout coming up for the food. He really loves watching fish—he’s a fishing dog! After we had given the trout all of their food, we walked around the pond and even sat for a few moments on one of the many benches while we watched the families enjoying feeding the trout.

The Orvis flagship store is definitely a great place to stop on any dog-friendly vacation. Don’t forget to bring some spending money, as Orvis sells a nice variety of dog supplies, including beds and collars.

Day Trips with Dogs

During our dog-friendly vacation to Vermont, we took a few day trips. One day we headed to Bennington, Vermont and visited the Bennington Battle Monument, which is the tallest structure in Vermont. I went inside The Monument Gift where they not only sold souvenirs from the Battle of Bennington in 1777, but tickets to tour the 306-foot-tall monument. I asked if the monument tour was dog-friendly and they explained as long as the tour guide was okay with it, yes. He was, so we did!

As the tour guide, Dexter, Levi, Chris and I took the elevator ride to the top of the Bennington Battle Monument, the tour guide provided us with a little lesson on the monument’s history. A group of people wanted to commemorate the Battle of Bennington and decided a monument would be a great way to memorialize the battle and at the same time store all the military supplies which had been the object of the battle.

After some funding and design issues, a proposal from John Phillipp Rinn, an architect from Boston, was approved. William Ward of Lowell, Massachusetts was hired as the contractor. The foundation was laid in 1887 and the monument was completed in 1891. The monument is constructed from blue-grey magnesian limestone and rough-faced, with the exception of two horizontal bands near the observatory level. The observation level has 20 eleven-foot slotted openings that provide a wonderful view of the area.

The tour guide told us we could visit as long as we wanted, there was no hurry. We strolled around the top of the monument, looking out all the windows. From the observation level, we could see Vermont, New York and Massachusetts. The view was amazing and Dexter really enjoyed sniffing the windows. The inside wall of the observation level had large aerial photos of the area. It was quite a unique experience.

After our inside tour of the monument, we went back down to stroll the grounds, which had a number of additional monuments and memorials. The four of us had a really nice dog-friendly day trip visiting Bennington Battle Monument. If you find yourself in the area, grab your dog and camera, and go check it out.
