Dexter the Dog loves to take dog-friendly boat rides. During our trip to St. Augustine, Florida, we ran out of time and did not have a chance to board the dog-friendly Schooner Freedom nor St. Augustine Scenic Cruise, but we did enjoy the Red Train Tour!

The dog-friendly Red Train Tour, operated by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! since 1953, takes guests on an extensive and educational tour through St. Augustine. The Red Train tour is fully narrated by the conductor. Our conductor was so knowledgeable and fun to listen to and banter with.

Great way to see St. Augustine, FL

Dexter and other well-behaved dogs are welcome on the train tour. Dexter enjoyed sitting on the train bench, smelling the air with the wind blowing through his ears. When he wasn’t looking at the Nation’s Oldest City’s architecture, he was snoozing in my lap.

When traveling to new destinations, sometimes it can be overwhelming to choose just what to do and see. This was particularly true in our case, when we were only staying for two days. One of the best parts of taking the Red Train Tour, is that as a new visitor, I was able to see the best parts of historic St. Augustine that I may never have known about. It also gave me the opportunity to pinpoint spots and attractions I want to spend more time at next time I visit St. Augustine. Yes, there needs to be a next time. 🙂

Loved the historic views

St. Augustine is full of old historic buildings such as the Oldest House, Old Jail, Spanish Memorial Hospital, Fort Menendez, Flagler College, various churches, and so much more. By riding on Ripley’s sightseeing train tour, visitors are able to get on and off at any of their 20 convenient stops. One of the best parts of your admission ticket, is that it is valid for the THREE days, and a new train comes by each stop every 15-20 minutes. Free car parking and on-demand shuttle service to and from area hotels is included.

When you are traveling to St. Augustine with your dog and are looking for a great way to see and get around “Nation’s Oldest City,” I definitely recommend The Red Train Tour. It’s an easy and enjoyable way to tour St. Augustine with your dog and not worry about parking or getting lost. If you and your canine companion are more adventurous, check out their Ghost Tour for a paranormal experience.

Before you go, make sure you check out St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Visitors & Convention Bureau for guides, maps, things to do, and much more.

Dog-friendly vacations are the best when you are visiting a pet-friendly city like St. Augustine, Florida. During our dog-friendly vacation to Florida, the family stayed two nights in St Augustine, Florida. The Nation’s Oldest City has definitely been on my radar for many years.

Dog-Friendly St. Augustine Video

St. Augustine was founded in 1565 and offers not only great beaches, outdoor activities, dining, shopping, and historic attractions, but St. Augustine is very pet-friendly! Dexter the Dog and I love to travel and visit dog-friendly cities.

Best Pet Friendly Vacations

Pet-friendly St. Augustine knows how to welcome their canine friends. St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and The Beaches have approximately 50 pet-friendly accommodations ranging in price points and variety – from hotels, to bed and breakfast, inns, and beach resorts. Leashed dogs are welcome in several area attractions including Colonial Quarter Museum, Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park (post coming soon), Spanish Military Hospital Museum, Schooner Freedom, St. Augustine Scenic Cruise, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, Red Train Tour, Ghost Tour, and various dog-friendly restaurants. You can read more on Dexter’s and my experience at Ripley’s and the Red Train here.

Pet-Friendly Florida Attractions

While visiting, Dexter and I weren’t only allowed in a lot of stores, restaurants, and attractions, we were welcomed with open arms, water bowls, and dog treats.

We enjoyed strolling through St. Augustine’s historic district, where he was welcome in most stores. I’m not sure if all stores are dog-friendly, but each one I asked, said yes. 🙂 There were a lot of dog-friendly outdoor restaurants; it was hard to choose. We decided to eat at Taberna del Caballo. The service, setting, and food were great! A little taste of Spain in each bite. Dexter enjoyed a nice, icy water and, of course, I provided him with some extra treats and fresh veggies from my plate.

Dog-Friendly St. Augustine Restaurants

St. Augustine beaches are even dog-friendly! St. Augustine and the surrounding area has some of the best beaches in Florida. That was a welcomed treat, as a lot of the beaches on the west side of Florida are not dog-friendly unless they are a specific dog beach. We visited Ponte Vedra Beach, where Dexter enjoyed mucking around the beach, sniffing the waves, and trying to eat the sea shells on the shore.

If you are looking for dog-friendly beaches, historic attractions, outdoor activities, dining, and shopping, you won’t want to miss St. Augustine on Florida’s Historic Coast. While many vacation spots boast of pet-friendly hotels or dog-friendly beaches, few destinations are as canine-centric as Florida’s Historic Coast.

Before you go, make sure you check out St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Visitors & Convention Bureau for guides, maps, things to do, and much more.

During our dog-friendly Florida vacation, our family was invited to stay at The Historic Peninsula Inn in Gulfport, Florida. Boy, am I glad we took them up on their generous offer! The Historic Peninsula Inn is situated in the center of Gulfport’s charming and dog-friendly merchant district. The location is within walking distance of a variety of shops, parks, and dog-friendly restaurants in Gulfport, Florida.

When we arrived (early, as usual), I was blown away at The Historic Peninsula Inn’s outside beauty. The grounds surrounding the breathtaking yellow inn were full of lush trees, plants, and flowers. While I walked up the steps, I was thinking to myself, how much fun we were going to have in Gulfport, Florida.

I was immediately greeted by Thomas at the front desk. As luck would have it, our room was ready, and we were able to check in early. The Historic Peninsula Inn offers twelve unique guest rooms and suites. We were staying in the pet-friendly room, The Casablanca Suite.

Thomas escorted me to my room and showed me how to use the historic elevator, which was installed just after World War II. The Historic Peninsula Inn has quite a history. The inn was built in 1905 as the Bayview Hotel. After World War II, the inn operated as Cedar’s Hospital for injured veterans returning from the war. After the hospital, the building was converted to a nursing home and later, a retirement home for gentlemen until the late 1980s when it sat empty and didn’t open again until 2002. In 2016, Veronica Champion revamped the building and turned it into the charming Historic Peninsula Inn.

This dog-friendly suite had 2 bedrooms, perfect for our family of 3. The main bedroom had a queen-sized bed, and the 2nd bedroom had 2 twin-sized sleigh beds.

Our dog-friendly Florida suite included a very large bathroom, hair dryer, bath essentials, towels, flat-screen TV, coffeemaker, bottled water, Wi-Fi, and a complimentary Florida breakfast! It also included a mini refrigerator, which is an important amenity for me since Dexter eats a fresh food diet. After walking around the suite, I was very happy with the cleanliness, layout, and comfort our rooms offered. This feeling would be confirmed by all 3 of my family members after our very restful and comfortable night.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants-Isabelle’s Restaurant

When traveling with dogs, it sometimes can be a challenge to find dog-friendly restaurants. But, I was in luck, as this Gulfport dog-friendly inn also offered a dog-friendly restaurant, Isabelle’s Restaurant, which not only offers indoor seating, but a fully covered patio and a second outside patio for outdoor seating. Inside, they frequently have live music and also host live music on their outside patio.

More dog-friendly outside seating

Isabelle’s Restaurant was awarded the “Best of the Beaches” and “Best of the Road” by Rand McNally, so I knew we would be in for a treat eating at this dog-friendly restaurant.

My parents started out with the Cornbread and Biscuit Basket. Cheddar jalapeno cornbread and buttermilk biscuits with cinnamon-honey butter. They both were raving at how unique and delirious these fresh biscuits were.

I ordered the Fried Green Tomato BLT, and boy this sandwich did not disappoint. Three fried green tomato slices, applewood bacon, lettuce, pimento cheese on a brioche bun. For my side, I chose the White Truffle and Gouda Macaroni and Cheese. Yes, it was as good as it sounds, but actually, even better!

For dinner, my mom ordered the Heirloom Tomato and White Wine Alfredo Pasta, and my step dad went with the lamb T-bones. Did they enjoy their meals? My step dad is still talking about how this was the best lamb he has ever had, and we all agree this was the best meal during our entire visit to Florida!

The Historic Peninsula Inn knows how to serve up fresh and scrumptious food. Their morning breakfast was impressive, too! They offered fresh fruit, quiche, and these amazing scratch fruit muffins. Yes, I had two muffins! I even ate and really enjoyed the quiche, and I’m not usually a fan of eggs.

Blueberry Hill Breakfast Cafe

All I can say, is I’m so happy that I saw the road sign for Blueberry Hill Breakfast Cafe when I was checking into my pet-friendly hotel! When Dexter and I travel, we always look for tasty and accommodating dog-friendly restaurants and outdoor patios. However, this was a bit of an oddity for us.

Let me explain.

On our weekend Chicago trip, my travel companion and I were going to grab an early morning breakfast and leave the pups in the car while we ate. No worries, it was cool, the car was parked in front, and they were also crated and covered. Really, the dogs were totally safe and happy.

We saw the sign for Blueberry Hill Cafe and thought it sounded like a great breakfast spot. We were greeted with such warmth and hospitality, which is always appreciated. When I was reading their menu, it was really hard for me to choose, because they had so many great offerings. Specialty pancakes, crepes, omelets, skillets, sandwiches, and salads to name just a few. They even offer organic coffee and freshly-squeezed juice and smoothies!

Baked blueberry French toast it was! This was not your ordinary French toast. This bread was made with loads of Michigan blueberries baked right into the bread batter. Think of blueberry bread, then grilled to perfection and topped with more fresh blueberry compote and a fresh cream cheese dipping sauce. Seriously. This was an amazing delight. I’m just sorry I wasn’t prepared to write this review and only had my phone to take a quick photo before I dove in.

As we were wrapping up our breakfast, the waitress brought us coffees to go. How amazing is that? We saw they had an outside cafe, so I inquired if the patio was dog-friendly, and it was. So, day two, here we come.

The next morning, we were super excited to eat once again at Blueberry Hill Cafe, this time with our pups. Once again, the staff was a real delight to be around. They helped us find a great seat for the dogs, brought them ice water and lime. What a treat! I originally ordered a side of bacon for us all to share, then decided fruit might be a better choice. Well, our wonderful server brought the pups both fruit and bacon!

This time I went for the Chunky Monkey Waffle. Yes, you read that correctly, and yes, I’m always in the mood for sweets. But, if you have more of a savory palate, my travel buddy had a few different omelets and loved them! Now, back to the Chunky Monkey. Pecans are baked right into the waffle batter and topped with bananas, chocolate syrup, more pecans and a homemade whipped cream. And yes, it was as good as it sounds!

Blueberry Hill Cafe’s friendly, family atmosphere was combined with great prices and exceptional food! Blueberry Hill has been servicing the Chicagoland area for over fifteen years with locations in Aurora, Darien, Homewood, Homer Glen, LaGrange and Oakbrook. Their website says, “At Blueberry Hill, we agree that Mom was right when she made sure you left the house with a good breakfast in the morning.” And I can vouch for this slogan. If you are in the Chicagoland area looking for a dog-friendly restaurant or just something for the family, you won’t want to miss this gem.

Dog-Friendly New York Attractions

On our way to Manchester, Vermont we drove through Hoosick, New York and saw an attraction we knew we would have to go back and visit: the Big Moose Deli and Country Store. Oh, my. If you are looking to photograph your dog in front of unusual landmarks, the Big Moose Deli is a must-see.

This dog-friendly attraction had cows, moose, a Statue of Liberty, and even funny cutouts. The four of us had a great time walking around the Big Moose, capturing some fun dog photos, and just looking at all the unique signs and treasures. Chris and I took turns going inside the country store and were impressed with the wealth of souvenirs inside.

Levi had plenty of photo-ops

The first thing I noticed was the old-time feel of the store. The wooden store shelves gave the store a warm feel, and they held a lot of local products, including their Big Moose peanut butter. Big Moose Deli and Country Store offers a wide variety of fun and unique grocery store products and souvenirs, including jams, t-shirts, candy, and Vermont maple syrups. If you are looking for something to eat, they have a deli counter full of great sandwiches including their famous pulled pork. If you have a sweet tooth, check out their pastries, pies, and chocolates. Yum!

Pet-Friendly Indiana Activities

Taking dog-friendly trips is always such a great adventure. But the adventure doesn’t have to stop at the destination; the trip there and back can be just as fun. On our way home from Chicagoland, Dexter, Levi, Chris, and I took a few side-trips, including visiting the Mid-American Windmill Museum in Kendallville, Indiana.

The dogs were welcomed with open hands and chin scratches. We started our tour in the Windmill Museum Barn and Gift Shop. We enjoyed an entertaining 8-minute video on the history of windmills and how they operated. It was very interesting and quite fun. After the documentary, our fun tour guide took us inside the room that houses and displays various parts of old windmills and windmill memorabilia and tools.

Enjoying our movie

The barn itself was owned and donated by Walter and Marie Klinger and moved from Avilla, Indiana to its new home in Kendallville, Indiana. The barn is a classic example of mortise/tenon construction with no nails. The wood is hand-hewn, and pegs are used to hold the structure together. It’s a pretty amazing site and work of art.

Next up, we walked the museum grounds and viewed the 52 windmills on display! The variety of windmills was nothing less than mind-boggling. We were able to enjoy windmills in sizes ranging from the two-foot steel Fairbury all the way up to the fifty-two foot wood Robertson.

We found it as a stop along the way home, but the Mid-America Windmill Museum would actually make a great destination trip. I am so glad that my travel buddy found it and suggested that we check it out. We all had a great time. If you find yourself in the Kendallville, Indiana area, check out this fun site. Traveling with Dogs

Dog Etiquette when Attending Dog Events and Outings with Your Dog

Are you planning on taking your dog to a dog-friendly event or activity? Here are 5 tips to consider before traveling with your dog. #raisingyourpetsnaturally
Dog-Friendly Travel and Events

Dexter The Dog and I attend a lot of pet expos and other pet events, and we enjoy our fair share of dog-friendly activities. I really enjoy watching dog parents and their dogs out and about socializing, exercising, and bonding. It’s great to see wonderful families having so much fun and being so in-tune and responsible with their dogs. But some can use a little help in the dog-etiquette and dog-awareness department.

Consider these five tips the next time you want to take your dog to a dog-friendly event.

  1. Will your dog enjoy the activity? If not, you might want to rethink taking him. If you are planning a fun dog-friendly adventure, it’s important to take your dog’s personality into account. If your dog would rather stay home and skip the outing, maybe that is a better option for him.
  2. Is your dog-friendly to other people and dogs? Proper socialization is so important in puppy and dog training. However, the key to successful socialization is to introduce your dog to situations at a slow pace, in an environment that is easy to navigate and move around to get more space when your dog needs it. A large dog event, or a small, tight space where you don’t have enough room or time to move away when needed is not the best environment for training and behavior modification.
  3. Is your dog well-behaved in public? He doesn’t have to be perfect, by any means. But if he’s jumping around like a maniac, barking, or dragging you across the room and you are unable to gain his attention, then the environment is too stimulating for your dog at that time.
  4. Pay attention to your dog! Seriously! If you want to attend a dog event and not pay attention to your dog, leave him at home. And that’s perfectly okay. There is a lot going on at dog events or when you take your dog on an adventure. If you are interacting and aware of your dog’s emotions and behavior, you and your dog will both have a much better time. I’m often saddened when I see a dog with a person who is totally unaware of how he’s behaving and feeling. I’ve seen everything: stressed dogs, dogs jumping on people, slipping around on the floors, nosing other dogs, and even dog reactivity.
  5. Even the best socialized dog needs frequent rest times, potty breaks, and just time to unwind from all the activity. Plan on taking your dog away from the crowds and just chill, sniff some grass, drink some water, and get a little rest. And don’t forget to pick up after your dog.

People can seem like scary monsters

Taking a dog on an adventure is loads of fun. It’s one of my favorite things to do with Dexter. But on each and every trip, I try to focus on Dexter’s needs to ensure he has what he needs and wants to thrive and enjoy the event. Remember, when taking your dog on a dog-friendly adventure, it’s a team effort. If you do not have the time or ability to pay attention to Fido, leave him at home. Dog-Friendly Wisconsin Attractions

Dexter and I love finding unique dog-friendly attractions and activities. When we stayed in Duluth, Minnesota, we knew we had to cross over to Wisconsin and look for some fun dog adventures, and boy did we find one at the SS Meteor Whaleback Ship Museum.

I contacted the museum prior to our arrival to ask if Dexter would be able to join us, and we were given the green light. First, a little history of the museum. The SS Meteor is the last remaining whaleback freighter designed by Captain Alexander McDougall. The SS Meteor was built right in Superior, Wisconsin.

The earned their name “whaleback” because of their innovative cigar-shaped steel hulls that rode low in the water when fully loaded with their cargo, giving the impression of a whale’s back.

In 1972, the Meteor officially landed in Superior and is now permanently land-berthed on Barker’s Island. She ended her shipping career as the SS Meteor, after carrying a variety of cargoes over the years, including iron ore, grain, sand and gravel, cars, and oil. Guests are able to tour the ship from the pilot house to cargo holds. The SS Meteor Museum also features exhibits on Great Lakes shipwrecks and the history of shipbuilding in the Twin Ports.

Dexter and I enjoyed the bottom half of the ship’s museum and did not take the guided tour. However, my step-dad did, and loved every minute of the tour. I was a bit worried that the steps would be too steep for Dexter and the top of the ship too hot. But Dexter and I had a great time looking at all the amazing pieces in the museum.
