The family decided to take our spring dog-friendly vacation to South Carolina and stay in Folly Beach. We are most defiantly a beach family. We rented “Close To The Edge,” a great 3-bedroom beach house rental through VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner, part of the HomeAway Family).

This pet-friendly Folly Beach rental home was bright, open, and roomy. The 3-bedroom rental had a master bedroom with a master bath, plus two standard bedrooms and another full bath. The bedrooms were very nice, comfortable, and provided plenty of space for our human family of three and Dexter The Dog. Hardwood floors ran throughout the home, which made sandy clean up a breeze.

This dog-friendly vacation rental was very clean, neat and modern, yet felt homey and comfortable.

The home had a full kitchen, dining room and living room, cable, Wi-Fi, wrap-around porch and fenced-in yard! It was a dog lover’s dream. The neighborhood was quiet and friendly and we were only five minutes from the ocean and fifteen minutes away from Charleston, South Carolina. This was a prime spot for our family vacation.

Dexter enjoyed the large fenced-in yard for potty breaks and playtime. We also brought a gate to close the front porch in so Dexter could roam the wrap-around porch. We enjoyed our afternoons and evenings relaxing on the deck and watching the lizards.

Dog-Friendly Petersburg, Florida |Boat Cruise: Shell Key Shuttle

During our dog-friendly Florida vacation, we had to do a dog-friendly sunset cruise! I mean, Dexter is a total boat dog. He loves everything about boat rides. Before our trip, I saw that Shell Key Shuttle had a page on their website stating the sunset cruise was dog-friendly. I always like to confirm and check the rules, so I contacted Shell Key Shuttle and they quickly responded to my email explaining that their day trips to Shell Key were not dog-friendly because of the Audubon preserve, but they did allow dogs on their sunset/dolphin watching cruises. That was awesome news.

We called in our reservation the day of the cruise and arrived at the Merry Pier (801 Pass-A-Grille Way) half an hour before departure. When Dexter saw the dock and boat, he was very happy. I think this boy is a mind-reader and knew we were going for a pet-friendly boat ride. We checked in, then were helped aboard the shuttle. I brought water, dog treats, a dog mat, my camera and of, course Dexter. We were ready to check out some Florida dolphins, then head into the sunset.

And yes, we saw dolphins! It was so much fun to see them leaping and swimming all around. Dexter was oblivious, as he just sat back and soaked up the salt air. I think having the breeze blow through his ears and nose is heaven for him. After our residential tour, we headed toward the sunset. Wow. It was amazing.

By the end of our 1.5-hour dog-friendly sunset cruise, Dexter was asleep. I’m sure it had to do with having such an action-packed day, the ocean breeze, and smooth rock of the boat. If you find yourself in St. Petersburg, Florida, I encourage you to take your dog and the family on a sunset/dolphin cruise aboard The Shell Key Shuttle. You won’t be disappointed.

Dexter The Dog and I love visiting dog-friendly stores and we love our outdoor adventures, so the Orvis Retail Store in Manchester, Vermont was a must-see. After all, it is the Orvis flagship store. Orvis is known for their fly-fishing gear and Dexter and I snooped around at all their displays. My step-dad is a fly fisherman and I knew he would have loved all that Orvis had to offer. They even had a neat bulk fly fishing section where you can purchase and make your own flies. To top it off, Orvis offers FREE fly fishing classes. Yes, I’m thinking Vermont may need to be a do-over with my step-dad and Mom.

After Dexter, Levi, Chris and I toured the inside of Orvis, we headed to the outside. It was time to see the trout pond that doubles as a hands-on experience during the fly fishing classes. But before stepping out, we purchased a handful of trout food to feed the trout. Dexter was thrilled and excited to see the big trout coming up for the food. He really loves watching fish—he’s a fishing dog! After we had given the trout all of their food, we walked around the pond and even sat for a few moments on one of the many benches while we watched the families enjoying feeding the trout.

The Orvis flagship store is definitely a great place to stop on any dog-friendly vacation. Don’t forget to bring some spending money, as Orvis sells a nice variety of dog supplies, including beds and collars.

During our dog-friendly vacation to Vermont, we took a few day trips. One day we headed to Bennington, Vermont and visited the Bennington Battle Monument, which is the tallest structure in Vermont. I went inside The Monument Gift where they not only sold souvenirs from the Battle of Bennington in 1777, but tickets to tour the 306-foot-tall monument. I asked if the monument tour was dog-friendly and they explained as long as the tour guide was okay with it, yes. He was, so we did!

Dog-Friendly Bennington, Vermont

As the tour guide, Dexter, Levi, Chris and I took the elevator ride to the top of the Bennington Battle Monument, the tour guide provided us with a little lesson on the monument’s history. A group of people wanted to commemorate the Battle of Bennington and decided a monument would be a great way to memorialize the battle and at the same time store all the military supplies which had been the object of the battle.

After some funding and design issues, a proposal from John Phillipp Rinn, an architect from Boston, was approved. William Ward of Lowell, Massachusetts was hired as the contractor. The foundation was laid in 1887 and the monument was completed in 1891. The monument is constructed from blue-grey magnesian limestone and rough-faced, with the exception of two horizontal bands near the observatory level. The observation level has 20 eleven-foot slotted openings that provide a wonderful view of the area.

The tour guide told us we could visit as long as we wanted, there was no hurry. We strolled around the top of the monument, looking out all the windows. From the observation level, we could see Vermont, New York and Massachusetts. The view was amazing and Dexter really enjoyed sniffing the windows. The inside wall of the observation level had large aerial photos of the area. It was quite a unique experience.

Dexter The Dog and I have always wanted to take a dog-friendly vacation in Vermont. In October 2016, we finally had our chance, and traveled with another cavalier friend, Levi, and his Mom, Chris. Not only were we planning a lot of dog-friendly day-trips in Vermont, we also planned on chilling out in our dog-friendly Inn, the Wilburton Inn to be exact. And yes, the Inn owners also have a cavalier named Jet!

Our drive from Ohio to Vermont was a bit stressful, as we drove in with a wintery mix. That’s not the way I like to travel, but it is what it is. We finally arrived late at night and drove up the windy scenic road to the Inn’s check in. The innkeeper was very friendly and provided us with check-in instructions for our villa.

We stayed in The Strawberry Inn Villa on the first floor. The villa can be rented either in its entirety or by up to six separate guests, which is what we did. The Wilburton Inn was named one of the top eight elegant US Mansion hotels by CNN, so I was a little concerned that it would be too fancy for us. But I was pleasantly surprised at how homey the room felt.

Our accommodation included two wooden queen beds on the ground floor with a large en suite bathroom with a shower and tub. The room also had a couple of sitting chairs, TV, and mini fridge. This was perfect for holding Dexter’s home-cooked meals.

The Strawberry Villa also included a large shared kitchen and dining space that we did not utilize. There was also a nice outside sitting area that we also did not use.

Although we spent most of our dog-friendly Vermont vacation touring the area, we did spend some time at the Wilburton Inn for a few fun adventures. First, a little history on the Wilburton Inn’s inspiring tale.

In the early 1900s, the Wilburton was the largest gentleman’s farm in town. The current innkeeper’s eldest son, Oliver, and his wife Bonnie, continue this tradition. They grow organic heirloom produce along with baking artisanal hearth breads and, from what I hear, famous veggie burgers. They are well-known throughout New England and beyond for their high-quality organic foods.

The Wilburton Inn offers rental houses, villas, and mansions throughout their thirty-acre hillside. These historic Vermont rentals feature dramatic mountain views. As we walked around the grounds, we enjoyed the artwork and sculptures throughout our walk. They also have a museum and workshops throughout the year.

The Wilburton Inn also proudly grows botanicals, including herbs. Obviously, after a winter storm, we weren’t able to enjoy this firsthand. Another fun feature is that lead gardener Daba Kydner also provides private herbal consultations. I just may need to take another trip to Vermont in the spring.

Dexter The Dog and I love our dog-friendly day trips and dog-friendly vacations. If you are traveling with your dog to the Midwest, I encourage you to check out the Indiana Dunes on Lake Michigan. You won’t be disappointed!

Dexter and I have visited the dog-friendly dunes and beach for the past two years now, and we are planning to visit the Indiana Dunes again next year. The Indiana Dunes are located along the southern tip of Lake Michigan. But it’s not just about the dunes – part of the beach is dog-friendly too! And as you probably know, Dexter is a beach dog.

Dog-friendly Indiana Beachs

But our dog-friendly day trip wasn’t just about Dexter and me – it was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel meetup! A celebration of our love for our Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. We even had a Cavoween Party in one of the shelter houses! Yes, a gathering of Cavalier friends spent the day socializing, eating tasty food, and even serenading Dexter for his birthday. This year, Dexter and I had traveling companions, Levi and his mom, Chris.

The Indiana Dunes has more than 70 miles of hiking and biking trails, forests, marshes, and prairies. Much more than Dexter and I could explore in one outing. Dexter and I ventured along the sandy dunes sniffing and looking for feathers to chase. We strolled boardwalks along the prairies and took photos. The weather was picture perfect and Dexter truly enjoyed himself.

Pet Friendly Vacations in Indiana

But, an adventure is never complete without a trip to the dog-friendly beach! The Cavalier group ventured to the National Lakeshore where we romped and played. The Indiana Dunes has fifteen miles of breathtaking shoreline, perfect for relaxing and spending a day with the family. Dexter had to dip his toes in Lake Michigan. With the water being on the chilly side, that was as much as he wanted to do. It was fun watching him gallop on the dog-friendly beach and run up the beach to escape the waves.

Our dog-friendly adventure at the Indian Dunes was such a great memory. I feel so blessed to be able to take Dexter on these day trips. Remember, the dog bucket list starts now~

Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Findlay, Ohio: Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Review

Cheddar's From Scratch Kitchen
Cheddar’s From Scratch Kitchen

After our dog-friendly visit at Riverside Park Waterfront and Waterfalls, it was time to grab some lunch. We were driving around Findlay, Ohio and saw Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Restaurant, and we noticed they had a patio. I hopped out and asked the staff if the patio was dog-friendly, and with an enthusiastic “yes,” we had found our lunch spot! I grabbed Dexter The Dog, Grandma, and Eddie, and we sat down at one of the tables on Cheddar’s outdoor patio.

Queso with beef dip
Queso with beef dip

Our waitress was extremely friendly and welcomed Dexter. Our beverages came out in a flash, as well as our chips and homemade queso with beef dip. Oh, my. I’m a fan of queso dip; I eat it at a local Mexican restaurant almost every Friday, but this was different – cheddar cheese with seasoned ground beef and man, was it good. The melted cheese had a smoky flavor, and it made for a very unique and tasty appetizer. The tortilla chips were light and not greasy. I really went to town eating them; I think I had more than my 1/3 of the order! Sorry, Mom and Ed.

The manager came out to say hello and told us a story of a guest who called just the week prior to ask if dogs were allowed on the patio. This was actually a new concept for the manager, and he said sure. And now, we were the second dog guests at Cheddar’s in Findlay, Ohio. He was very pleasant, and I sure hope Dexter made a good impression.

Dog-Friendly Cheddar's Restaurant

Cheddar’s menu was quite large, and the prices were beyond reasonable. I actually had a hard time choosing what I was going to have for lunch. Usually there are only one or two items on a menu I even like, but that was not the case at Cheddar’s. I went for the Cheddar’s club sandwich on toasted potato bread, with fresh, hand-cut fries. My mom ordered the fried fish tacos and my step-dad, Ed went crazy and ordered the Monte Cristo.

We were all extremely impressed with the quality of the food. Everything tasted great and was fresh and crisp, and I could totally tell it was from scratch. My club sandwich was stacked high with smoked ham, smoked turkey, bacon, American cheese, cheddar cheese and the works on condiments. The bread was toasted and had a really nice taste and texture. Dexter enjoyed some of my fries; I just couldn’t say no to those eyes. I wasn’t prepared for a lunch outing, so I had not packed him a stuffed food treat toy.

Leftovers? You bet. We were so full, we didn’t have room for dessert, but that’s OK – we got dessert to go. And I really appreciated their small, bite-sized dessert minis, so I was able to order both hand-made key lime pie cheesecake and chocolate trifle. The leftovers were great for dinner, and topping it off with those dessert minis really made this trip to Cheddar’s a home run. We are already planning our next outing to Findlay, Ohio, just to go to Cheddar’s!

Off to the races, the Dachshund races! Dexter and I were invited by one of our Doxie friends to come out to the Findlay Doxie Downs Dachshund Races in Findlay, Ohio. Since Findlay is only about an hour away, we couldn’t say no. We packed our dog day trip gear and headed to Findlay.

We arrived at Riverside Park Waterfront and Waterfalls mid-morning and were welcomed by some cute Dachshund signs. We could tell by the signs where we needed to go – just follow the wiener dogs. 😉 The Dachshund races were held inside one of the many shelter houses around the park. The dog costume party was happening as we arrived. There were Dachshunds to our right and to our left, and they were so cute!

We didn’t stay long at the races; we decided to check out the beautiful park. Riverside Park in Findlay, Ohio didn’t disappoint. The park grounds were well-maintained, with a variety of trails to choose from. We walked along the waterfront, since Dexter is always up to getting his toes wet. Dexter enjoyed the scenic views of the waterfalls, the dam, and the overlook deck. He also enjoyed watching the ducks and sniffing anything that caught his attention.

Riverside Park Waterfront and Waterfalls also offers canoe and kayak rentals. This was very tempting, but I did not have Dexter’s dog life jacket, so it was a no-go on this outing. We continued to walk the park until we were ready to call it a day and find a local dog-friendly restaurant.

Traveling with Your Dog: How to be a Good House Guest

Staying with Friends and Family with Your Dog

Vacations with Dogs
Traveling With Dogs

If you are traveling with your dog, you may find yourself staying with friends or family.

Here are 10 ways to be an ideal house guest with your dog.

Vacationing with your dog is a great adventure for both you and your canine companion. You may find yourself staying overnight at a friend’s house or even a family member’s home. Being a great unobtrusive and even helpful house guest is more than just polite etiquette, it’s a necessity, especially if you ever want to be invited back.

When a friend or family member invites you and your dog to stay at their home, it is very different than staying in a dog-friendly hotel or other dog-friendly accommodation. There is no maid service and you are staying in a HOME, not an establishment. It is a big deal for a person to invite you and your dog into their home; you should appreciate the gesture and try to ensure that they do not regret their decision to open their home to you and your companion.

Here are 10 Simple Ways To Be A Welcome House Guest

  1. Confirm Mutual Dates: When you receive an invite, your host may be thinking one night, not three or seven. Don’t overstay your welcome. Before booking your overnight stay, confirm your arrival and departure dates including times. Not everyone is a night owl or early riser. You should do your best to accommodate your host’s time-frame.
  2. Thank You Gift: Providing your host with a nice gift from your hometown is a great way to show them that you are thinking of them and appreciate their hospitality. Think about your host’s personal interests and see if you can tie those interests into a gift.
  3. Meals and Activities: Talk with your host prior to your arrival to determine if you are fending for yourself, or are going to participate together on meals or adventures. It’s important to understand what both of you are expecting out of the relationship instead of trying to backtrack or think on your feet. If going out, what are your plans for your dog? Will you be doing a dog-friendly restaurant, or will you be leaving your dog home alone at your host’s house? In a crate, or free-roaming? If you are venturing out without your host, make sure you take your dog! Your host is not your dog sitter. Also, talk with your host about your comings and goings so they can know when to expect you.
  4. Pets: If your host is welcoming your dog, they may have pets, too. Talk with them prior to your trip
    Vacationing with Family and Dogs
    Other Pets

to ensure you understand their pet’s needs and personalities. Maybe your host has a cat that has never been around dogs. Where will the pets meet? On a walk? In the yard?

  5. Your Dog: Hopefully, if you are asking to stay at a friend or family’s home, your dog is well-behaved and friendly. Don’t assume your host will want your dog wandering around their home unattended just because they opened their home to the both of you. Start by keeping your dog on his leash and ask if he can be let off. Do not allow your dog to be snoopy or disruptive and always know where he is. If your dog is a boy, or a female that has accidents, a dog belly band or female dog diaper may be needed.
  6. Potty Breaks: Keep in mind that no one wants to step in dog poo. Make sure you pick up your dog’s poop each and every time he goes. When taking your dog for a potty break, ask your host where they would prefer you to walk. Avoid flower beds or ornamental yard art.
  7. Chip In: If you are eating any of your host’s food, or drinking their coffee or other beverages, make a trip to the local grocery store to replace your share. If this is not possible, leave some cash to cover your portion. You don’t want your host to have to foot the bill for your food and drinks.
  8. Your Manners: Think back to your younger years when you visited your parents’ friends. What did they tell you? Take off your shoes, don’t make a mess, be polite, ask nicely…these still hold true. Don’t leave the bathroom a mess or your bed unmade. Clean up after yourself and your dog.
  9. Offer to Help: Don’t expect your host to wait on you. If you are eating meals together, offer to help in the kitchen. Would they prefer you to help cook or maybe to do the dinner dishes? What about your dirty towels and bedding? If you’re there long enough, maybe you can offer to run a load of laundry, leave them money for a laundry service, or even a gift card to a dry cleaner.
  10. Thank You Note: This may be something you plan even before arriving at your host’s home. A nice, old-fashioned thank you card always lets someone know you are thankful for their hospitality. Pet-Friendly Maumee, Ohio Food Truck Friday
Are you looking for a dog-friendly and family-friendly Friday Night? If so, Maumee’s Food Truck Friday might be just what you are looking for.

Dog Friendly Maumee Ohio
Maumee Food Truck Friday!

Dexter The Dog and my human family love to have fun dog-friendly weekend adventures. Maumee, Ohio is 5 minutes down the road from us and has a great summer Friday event that we all enjoy, Maumee’s Food Truck Friday! Maumee Uptown Business Association has been putting on this dog-friendly event for two years.

Maumee’s Food Truck Fridays are in the heart of the historic district. For those unfamiliar with this great little town, Uptown Maumee has a variety of unique shops and local businesses. Food Truck Fridays are held during the summer months from 5pm to 9pm on Conant and East Wayne Street in Maumee, Ohio. There is always plenty of on-street parking and even free parking lots right across the street from the food trucks.

This one Mom!

The line-up of local food trucks depends on individual truck availability, so it varies from week to week. This past Friday, Deets BBQ, Grumpy’s Deli, Rusty’s Road Trip, Nick & Nino’s Coal Fired Grill, Zin Coffee, Nacho Danny, Displaced Chef, Jacky’s Depot, and Rosie’s Italian were all in attendance. Another bonus is that the Maumee Farmers Market is also going on. There are plenty of tables and even tents to block out the sun. A local DJ rocks out some tunes and occasionally there is a live band.

After considering all the options, I decided to give Rusty’s Road Trip a try. I ordered an Italian grilled cheese and home cut fries. After I placed my order, the owner reintroduced herself to me – she had taken my dog training classes in the past! What a small world; you gotta love local!

I made a great food choice. The Italian grilled cheese from Rusty’s Road Trip was excellent. The bread was crispy and the cheese was gooey and delicious. I’m not sure what all was inside, but the flavors were great! The fresh cut fries were very tasty. And yes, Dexter did get to try a few, too.

Rusty’s Road Trip=Yummo!

After we all ate our local meals, we sat and listened to the DJ. It was a very nice and relaxing atmosphere. Families bustled around while the kids were laughing and playing. Once our food settled, we checked out the local merchants at the Maumee Farmer’s Market. My step-dad picked up some local bread and butter pickles, then we headed home. Another great Friday was under our belt.

If you and your dog find yourself in Northwest Ohio, or close to Maumee, Ohio on a summer Friday night, I encourage you to check out Maumee’s Food Truck Friday! You won’t be disappointed.

Do you and your dog enjoy a local event? I’d love to hear in the comments.
