Oh, My Aching Back!

Yesterday, I relaunched my blog to help me stay on track with my goal to get and stay healthy. The morning plan was to hit the gym before starting work. But my body seems to have other plans.

Okay, the title is not totally accurate. Although I’ve had back problems almost my entire life, even a little scoliosis in my lower back, today it’s about my sciatica. I didn’t know I had an issue with sciatica until I hit the internet in order to explain the location of my pain.

This is what happened to lead me on today’s pain-path. A few weeks ago, I drove to Maryland to present a workshop on treating separation anxiety in dogs.. My car is not the most comfortable car, but I manage. But I think the real pain in my back is because of what I did during the 2-hour dog training workshop. I stood and put my left knee on my chair the entire workshop. Then, the next day I drove back to Ohio. That standing position was not my shining hour.

That night when I got home, my back was very angry. It was so angry, I actually went to the gym to soak and stretch in the pool, something I would never do. Public pool, no way! I continued to nurse my back with various heating pads, patches, and pillows behind and under my bottom. And of course, I had daily walks and playtime with Dexter The Dog. After about a week my back was feeling better, but certainly not normal. I’m sure my daily computer work at my not so ergonomically correct workstation doesn’t help. I ended my week with a little stop at the gym to hit the elliptical machine for 15 minutes. I actually was feeling better after that movement.

At the start of this week, my back pain was pretty minimal. So, I decided it was time to get back into the gym on a regular basis and work toward my regular workout. Monday, I hit the elliptical machine for 30 minutes (I was up to 45). It felt good to get my body moving. Tuesday, no time for the gym because of my client load. But, walking with Dexter is always a given. Tuesday afternoon, the pain started to kick in. It wasn’t the same pain in the same location, it’s my sciatica on the left side.

I had a restless night, and hitting the gym this morning was not an option. I’m wondering if I overdid the workout. Maybe it’s not the right movement for my body yet. Who knows? But, I’m playing it safe for the day and limiting my exercise to walking Dexter. I took Arnica 30c this morning and will take 2 more doses. Hopefully, it will help with the muscle aches and inflammation. I need to bust out my last heating patch, too. I also ordered a new computer desk and hope that will help alleviate the weird position I contort my body while writing. Here’s hoping.

What are your go-to natural remedies for back or sciatica pain? I’d love to hear.
