Natural Hair Color: Light Mountain Natural Hair Color Review

First, let me confess that I actually goofed and ordered the wrong shade of organic hair color and conditioner! I actually meant to order the Neutral, and I ordered two shades darker….Auburn! I’m not sure if I would have gone through with coloring my hair if I would have known that first. LOL, that’s the thing about being human: we make mistakes!

I normally color my hair with your average hair color, that I’m sure is full of toxic things, and just not healthy. I do a very light blonde with highlights. You can see from the photo on the left, I don’t fool around!

So, here we go. I purchased Light Mountain Natural hair color and conditioner-Auburn. A bonus: this hair color is organic too! And pretty cheap at about $5 a box.

First, I had to familiarize myself with the extensive instructions. This hair color is “henna” which is new to me, but has been around since ancient Egyptian times! The instructions said to do a strand test first…. I skipped this part. The way I figure it, my hair will grow back, so I’m not too concerned.

I was a bit put off by the instructions. Boil water in a non-metal pan! I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a pan that isn’t metal. So, I used the hot water from our water dispenser. I dumped the henna into a glass bowl (no metal per instructions), added the hot water to make a paste, and let it set for 10 minutes. The instructions said 10-30 minutes. I hate waiting! While waiting my 10 minutes, I applied petroleum jelly (not a fan) to my face around my hairline. I hear this henna stuff stains like crazy, and I am quite messy! Then I applied to my damp hair.

It wasn’t pretty! The henna paste was still warm, smelled okay (better than your typical hair color), but reminded me of dog poo. Not sure if is because I’m around dog poo all the time, the color of the henna mixture, or what. Now the real wait….45 minutes! 10 minutes into it, I realized I did not put my plastic hat on that came with my organic hair color. Ooops. 45 minutes later, into the shower I went! The instructions advised rinsing with baking soda, so I obliged. Then another wait….1.5 hours (I don’t blow dry my hair) for the final results……

Well, I am pleasantly impressed! I wasn’t expecting the organic, all-natural henna hair color to cover my gray so well! I will try 2 shades lighter next time, Neutral. I hope that covers!

Indigoferae tinctoria (indigo) leaf powder*. *Certified Organic

11/3/2013 Update: Well, the roots came back pretty quickly. Sorry, I should have been better at keeping track.

  1. Wow, this is great Tonya! I love the blog, and i'm even thinking about trying this product! I am VERY white now, and I have to color my roots every 3 weeks. I know the stuff is really bad for you but i'm NEVER going gray/white! Thanks for the tip! 🙂

  2. Thanks Debbie for posting! I should be coloring every 3 weeks…but I'm a bit of a procrastinator! I will try to do a follow up on how long it lasts too. Please feel free to share with the viewers your experience too!

  3. I think the color looks good- not too dark at all. And the paste was more similar to baby poo than dog poo. 🙂
