Dog-Friendly Duluth, MN

For those of you who have been following my dog blog, you know I HATE winter, snow, and the cold. But I love Dexter The Dog, and he loves dog adventures, no matter what the weather. My brother moved to Cotton, Minnesota, just outside of Duluth, last year. Dexter and I have not been too far west, and my step-dad wanted to try a little ice-fishing, so off we went.

Driving from Ohio to Minnesota the first weekend in March was a bit sketchy. We traveled in some scary wind and snow. Not a ton of snow, but enough snow and wind to create white-out conditions during our drive. But my step-dad is a trooper when it comes to road trips, so we did just fine. Slow and steady.

My brother lives in a small cabin in Cotton, Minnesota on Lake Elora. This was the perfect place to call home for an extended weekend. My brother and step-dad, Ed, were able to go out on the lake for daily ice-fishing. Unfortunately, they were not too successful in their catches, but they did have a great time!

Standing on Lake Superior

Throughout the weekend, we had a few dog-friendly day-trips to Duluth. Today, I want to share with you our day on the Duluth Lakewalk. This was one of our favorite days in Duluth. The Lakewalk, sometimes referred to as the Boardwalk, offers a scenic path around Lake Superior for walking, running, rollerblading, or biking. Duluth Lakewalk has a dual path to accommodate everyone. One path is paved and one is a nice boardwalk, which I found very helpful. Since Dexter cannot walk for long periods, I have to pop him in his dog stroller for rest times.

Admittedly, we did not walk the entire three-mile walk, which runs from Bayfront Park to London Road, on the northeast side of town. After all, it was cold! It was a great walk and watching the waves crush developing ice around the shorelines was breathtaking. I had to hold Dexter back because he wanted to dip his toes in Lake Superior. Sorry, Dexter—not on this trip!

No swimming today

Even though there was snow and slush around, I could tell the grounds were well-maintained, with a variety of fun sculptures and landmarks for photo opportunities. Dexter and I love our photo ops. Okay, him, not so much. The Lakewalk takes you through a variety of Duluth attractions, including the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge, Lake Superior Marine Museum, and Canal Park. The walk also provided easy access to restaurants, cafes, pubs, and restrooms, but it did not have a commercial feel—it was very pleasant and relaxing. There were also plenty of park benches and even poop stations. This made the Lakewalk a great dog-friendly park.

Fun dog photo-opportunities

The Duluth Lakewalk is such a great opportunity to access both Lake Superior and historical attractions, it’s a must-do. I am happy to say that the family will be back in July, and I can’t wait to take Dexter back to the Duluth Lakewalk!

Dog-Friendly Orvis Stores

Dexter The Dog and I love visiting dog-friendly stores and we love our outdoor adventures, so the Orvis Retail Store in Manchester, Vermont was a must-see. After all, it is the Orvis flagship store. Orvis is known for their fly-fishing gear and Dexter and I snooped around at all their displays. My step-dad is a fly fisherman and I knew he would have loved all that Orvis had to offer. They even had a neat bulk fly fishing section where you can purchase and make your own flies. To top it off, Orvis offers FREE fly fishing classes. Yes, I’m thinking Vermont may need to be a do-over with my step-dad and Mom.

Dexter and Levi

After Dexter, Levi, Chris and I toured the inside of Orvis, we headed to the outside. It was time to see the trout pond that doubles as a hands-on experience during the fly fishing classes. But before stepping out, we purchased a handful of trout food to feed the trout. Dexter was thrilled and excited to see the big trout coming up for the food. He really loves watching fish—he’s a fishing dog! After we had given the trout all of their food, we walked around the pond and even sat for a few moments on one of the many benches while we watched the families enjoying feeding the trout.

The Orvis flagship store is definitely a great place to stop on any dog-friendly vacation. Don’t forget to bring some spending money, as Orvis sells a nice variety of dog supplies, including beds and collars.

Dog-Friendly Day Trips

Dog-Friendly Indiana Dunes on Lake Michigan

Dog-Friendly Indiana Dunes

Dexter The Dog and I love our dog-friendly day trips and dog-friendly vacations. If you are traveling with your dog to the Midwest, I encourage you to check out the Indiana Dunes on Lake Michigan. You won’t be disappointed!

Dexter and I have visited the dog-friendly dunes and beach for the past two years now, and we are planning to visit the Indiana Dunes again next year. The Indiana Dunes are located along the southern tip of Lake Michigan. But it’s not just about the dunes – part of the beach is dog-friendly too! And as you probably know, Dexter is a beach dog.

But our dog-friendly day trip wasn’t just about Dexter and me – it was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel meetup! A celebration of our love for our Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. We even had a Cavoween Party in one of the shelter houses! Yes, a gathering of Cavalier friends spent the day socializing, eating tasty food, and even serenading Dexter for his birthday. This year, Dexter and I had traveling companions, Levi and his mom, Chris.

The Indiana Dunes has more than 70 miles of hiking and biking trails, forests, marshes, and prairies. Much more than Dexter and I could explore in one outing. Dexter and I ventured along the sandy dunes sniffing and looking for feathers to chase. We strolled boardwalks along the prairies and took photos. The weather was picture perfect and Dexter truly enjoyed himself.

But, an adventure is never complete without a trip to the dog-friendly beach! The Cavalier group ventured to the National Lakeshore where we romped and played. The Indiana Dunes has fifteen miles of breathtaking shoreline, perfect for relaxing and spending a day with the family. Dexter had to dip his toes in Lake Michigan. With the water being on the chilly side, that was as much as he wanted to do. It was fun watching him gallop on the dog-friendly beach and run up the beach to escape the waves.

Our dog-friendly adventure at the Indian Dunes was such a great memory. I feel so blessed to be able to take Dexter on these day trips. Remember, the dog bucket list starts now~

Dog-Friendly Sandusky, Ohio Attractions

Toft Dairy Ice Cream is dog-friendly and delicious!

Dog Friendly Ohio
Dog-Friendly Toft’s Dairy Ice Cream Parlor

Toft’s Dairy Ice Cream Parlor in Sandusky, Ohio was a great finish to our Ohio dog-friendly day trip. After our visit to The Holden Arboretum, we wanted to stop on the way home for some good old-fashioned ice cream. Homegrown goodness doesn’t get any better than the legendary Toft’s Dairy!

Toft’s Ice Cream Parlor is a dog-friendly landmark attraction for both locals and tourists alike. This family-owned ice cream shop is home to more than 70 unique and tasty Toft’s Ice Cream flavors, and even still uses its original soda fountain and parlor wood seating. What kind of tasty ice cream flavors might you find? Unique ones like Limited Edition Campfire S’mores, Key Lime Pie, Mint Chocolate Chip, Muddy’s Sea Salt Slam, Orange Pineapple, and Caveman Chocolate, to name just a few.

Vacationing With Dogs
Toft’s Ice Cream

If you are looking to shop local, Toft’s Dairy receives milk deliveries from 20 local farms 365 days a year. By using only local farmers within a 50-mile radius, Toft’s guarantees that only the freshest milk is used in their ice cream. As a health-conscious consumer, I appreciate that they take it one step further by requiring written pledges from all 20 of their dairy farms to refrain from using the synthetic growth hormone rBST when producing milk shipped to the Toft’s plant. That said, I’m by no means saying ice cream is a healthy treat, but we all must splurge every now and again. 😉

Dexter The Dog and I sniffed around the outdoor seating area while Mom and Ed picked out their ice cream. There were some pretty neat things to check out, like an old C. Toft Dairy milk truck! Dexter and I had lots of dog photo opportunities.

When it was time for me to pass Dexter to my Mom so I could go get ice cream for myself and Dexter (he splurged too), I was a bit overwhelmed at what flavor to choose! I ended up with a $3.75 kid’s Caveman Chocolate and a $0.25 soft serve vanilla for Dexter. You read that right; my bill was only $4 and the portions were huge!

Dog Friendly Ohio Beaches
I’m Ready!

Dexter was more than ready for his doggie ice cream treat. After putting on his monkey snood from Meek by Design, he dove right into his vanilla soft serve. He was a happy camper. And my Caveman Chocolate was so good! Rich, milky-smooth dark chocolate ice cream, loaded with fudge-filled chocolate chunks – you can’t go wrong with this flavor if you are a chocoholic like I am.

Since Toft’s Ice Cream Parlor is only about an hour away, I foresee more day trips to Sandusky, Ohio in our future! If you and your dog find yourself in the area, you won’t want to miss this dog-friendly attraction.

Fun Fact: In 2008 Toft’s added the area’s first wind turbine, which helps power the daily operations of the plant.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? Let me know in the comments.
