Friday’s Favorite Five: Indestructible and Tough Dog Toys

For those dog lovers out there searching for “indestructible dog toys,” I am sorry to say they do not exist. Especially if you are looking for a soft or fabric-type tough dog toy – that is even more challenging. However, there are a few plush dog toys that are durable and can stand up to some dog chewing and tugging. But when your dog wants to lie down with the toy and start “picking,” it will likely be time for you to put away the dog toy or replace it. But Dexter and I do have our favorite tough, soft dog toys. Here are our top picks!

1. HuggleHounds Raccoon Knottie. These soft, plush and durable corduroy Knotties may not look like much, but they are quite durable for a plush dog toy. HuggleHounds Knottie is lined with durable Tuffut Technology and has a strong corduroy outside. Toss in 5 fun squeakers and a crinkle tail, and your dog will thank you for this fun toy. Dexter’s raccoon lasted him a few months of playing, fetching, and a little tugging until the day came when Dexter decided ‘Rocky must die’ and he picked at him until he busted a seam open. If you don’t have a picker on your hands, HuggleHounds is a fun and durable dog toy.

2. Fluff & Tuff dog toys. Dexter tested out his first Fluff & Tuff toy, Flo, in 2014. This plush dog toy is quite durable. Dexter and I can tug, fetch, and hide this tough dog toy without causing any holes or ripped seams. The company is actually located in Michigan and they are committed to quality and safety. The seams are double stitched, and the thick, plush outer fabric is lined with a thick, durable Tuffweb™ mesh liner. Dexter’s Fluff and Tuff Flo lasted just over a year before he decided he wanted to eat and pick at the fin; that is when she bit the dust. But have no fear, Ruby Rainbow and Tank The Shark made it to his toy box. They, too, are holding strong.

3. goDog Dragons toys. Dexter was introduced to these strong and tough plush dragons as a puppy. And these are another tough, soft dog toy. goDog dragons stand up to lots of fetching and tugging. The outer fabric of these plush dragons is made with bubble plush and lined with Chew Guard Technology™, and they truly stand up to tough play. These dog toys are minimally stuffed, giving them a fun, floppy play style. Once again, these dog toys lasted Dexter a good year before he decided it was time to pick and chew.

4. Katie’s Bumpers Sqwuggies. All I have to say is, “SQWUGGIE!!” and Dexter comes running! Sqwuggies are a fun and interactive tug or fetch toy. They are made from professional-grade fire hose material, so they are built to last. The squeaker inside is quiet, which makes it a great toy for dogs who are a bit sensitive to strange noises. And tug and fetch, we do! For extra fun, I attached a 5′ fleece tug rope to the end and I can ask Dexter to stay as I run around with the Sqwuggie whipping it around until I tell Dexter, “GET IT!” We have loads of fun with this tough dog toy. It stands up to some serious play. But, of course, it only lasts until Dexter decides to pick the ends. However, this was actually a hand-me-down from my last dog, so with normal play, it’s crazy tough!

5. Fleece Tug Toys. Dexter has had fleece tug toys all his life. For whatever reason, he never decides that these need to be picked apart, so they stand up to time, tugging and fetching. I prefer fleece tug toys over rope toys because I think they are soft and better for a dog’s teeth. Also, rope dog toys tend to lose their strings which can cause a choking hazard, and I’m not too fond of that aspect. And Dexter, well, he likes to take his fleece tug toy and shake his head like a mad dog, and I can’t imagine what a hard rope toy knot would feel like hitting his body. So, fleece tug toys are, so far, the only soft toy that Dexter has decided not to kill.

If not for Dexter’s picking and gnawing, I would bet all of the above durable dog toys would still be good to go.

Fun Dog Toy Review: Outward Hound Tail Teaser

Dexter The Dog really has been enjoying his Outward Hound Tail Teaser Dog Toy! It’s a squeaking dog toy on a stick, and it is quite fun. As a professional dog trainer, I’m always looking for fun ways to engage my dog, and ways for dog training clients to have fun and play with their pups.

If you are looking for a fun, motivational dog toy, I highly recommend checking this exercising dog training toy out. The Outward Hound Tail Teaser is a great toy that can be chased, tugged and is quite strong! The durable nylon cord and flexible handle make it great for tugging. You can twitch it around and make it move in erratic ways, to entice your dog or cat to play.

I am so glad that I purchased this interactive dog toy for Dexter. Look at how much fun he’s having.
P.S. He had even more fun off-camera. He’s kind of camera shy.

How do you like my new HuggleHounds Crunchy Monkey? HuggleHounds was kind enough to send me one to try and one to use as a giveaway! Thanks, HuggleHounds! I’ve been a fan of HuggleHounds toys for some time now. You can read my review of my Knotties Raccoon here.

This crunchy monkey is referred to as “monkey” in our house. That’s strange. Mom and Grandma call me monkey too. I don’t think we look alike at all. Anyway, my HuggleHounds Crunchy Monkey is super fun! I have a real good time tossing him up in the air, shaking my head like I’m trying to kill him, and playing tug with Mom. My monkey dog toy is quite large and tough. From head to bottom he measures 12″ long. HuggleHounds Crunchy Monkey has a crunchy recycled bottle inside his body. The cool thing is there is a Velcro enclosure on the bottom so the bottle can be replaced with a new one…..or even with something else. You can even put a squeaker toy inside, or treats, or whatever else you can think of for a new game.

Best dog toy reviews.
Fun dog toys.

HuggleHounds Crunchy Monkey has really long arms and legs. They are great for tugging and dragging the dog toy around the room. He is made of soft corduroy plush and lined with Tuffut Technology for extra strength and durability. The monkey has squeakers in his arms and long, fun bungee legs. I am really digging my HuggleHounds Crunchy Monkey. This has been at the top of my toy box this past couple of weeks. He’s a real hit! He is holding up strong to my tugging and fetching and tossing.

However, I did manage to pick away at his furry head (he had hair) and chewed his ears off. But once I got those out of the way, he’s tough. Seams are holding strong and no holes. For most dogs, he probably would hold up nicely. As you know, I’m just a focused picker.

Best dog tug toys.
Great for tugging and tossing.

So the verdict? HuggleHounds Crunchy Monkey is a win for being fun, large and tough for tugging.
I’m still able to pick at pieces, but fabric toys are just that way.

Thank you again HuggleHounds for your toy to review.

Pros: Durable soft dog toy, lots of fun points to tug and chew on, tough squeakers and fabric, affordable, machine washable
Cons: Didn’t stand up to my picking, made in China

Check out my HuggleHounds Knotties Raccoon Dog Toy. Or as I call him, “Rocky Raccoon.” I really love my Rocky Raccoon. Mom and I tug my HuggleHounds Knotties Raccoon Dog Toy. We play fetch. I walk around squeaking him. He is loads of fun!

Rocky has five squeakers: one in each paw and one in the body. I’ve had Rocky now for about a year, and all the squeakers still work too! That’s a bonus for a plush dog toy. Those squeakers usually like to die.Now let’s talk about HuggleHounds Knotties Raccoon’s tail. The tail has a super-cool crinkle material for added fun. Crinkle. Crinkle. Crinkle I go.

My HuggleHounds Knotties Raccoon Dog Toy aka, “Rocky” is a tough, soft dog toy. It has lots of squeakers and knotted arms for fetching and tugging. However, as with most soft plush toys, I have to be supervised with it. I am really a dog who likes to pick and pick at pieces and suckle them.

So I did make a hole in it when Mom wasn’t paying attention. So for me, it’s a Mom-supervised toy only. But we still love Rocky and think they are very tough and will stand up for most doggies. Mom often buys them for gifts because of their fun shape and durability. I even bought a pink bunny for my girlfriend, Sabrina Furchild.

The HuggleHounds Knotties Raccoon Dog Toy is a big win in my house!

Plush Dog Toy Reviews: Fluff & Tuff’s Koi Fish Dog Toy

I have had my Flo The Koi for about eight months! And she’s holding strong. You heard me: no holes, no tears and she’s still in my toy box. Believe me, I have tried to pick at her fins, but I just can’t do it.
Fluff & Tuff Dog Toy Review

I love to play hard with my dog toys. Mom is always saying how ruff I am on my toys. Or is that rough? I fetch, tug, and love to pick on them. Meet Fluff & Tuff’s plush dog toy Flo The Koi. Mom picked up Flo The Koi dog toy at a pet event in January 2014. After talking with the distributor, Mom thought Flo The Koi might be worth a test run to see if I could play with her for a while before killing her. Sorry, Flo, but that’s what I typically do with my soft toys. I’m quite the picker.

According to Fluff & Tuff’s website, the plush dog toys are made with high quality, ultra-plush outer fabric, durable, thick inner mesh liner, double-stitched seams, stitched eyes with no hard edges, and a large durable squeaker. Mom was hoping I could get a few days playing with Flo The Koi.

The results are in! As of today (8/1/2014) I have had my Flo The Koi for about eight months! And she’s holding strong. You heard me: no holes, no tears and she’s still in my toy box. Believe me, I have tried to pick at her fins, but I just can’t do it.

Tough Dog Toys
I think she needs a bath.

Wow, pretty cool, huh? I’m glad too because that means I get to keep her. I love to play fetch with Mom and Flo and also just walk around squeaking her. Yup, the squeaker still works too. Paws up! Flo The Koi is one of my toughest soft dog toys. Maybe Mom will pop over to Fluff & Tuff’s website and pick me up another toy!

Pros: Very durable soft dog toy, perfect size for me to carry and affordable
Cons: No mention on their website about the manufacturing of the toys

Katie’s Bumper Dog Toy Review: Sqwuggie

Tough Dog Toys
Katie’s Bumpers Sqwuggie

Sqwuggie-The Swuggie has been one of my all-time favorite toys to play tug and fetch with. Probably the best part of the toy is my playtime with Mom. It just doesn’t get better than playing a good game of tug with Mom.

Katie’s Bumper’s Sqwuggie is a very nice size for grabbing and holding while tugging. The handle gives Mom plenty of room to hold on tight while I whip my head around and make all kinds of grunts and gurgles. This toy is tough, tough, tough for dog tugging. I’ve maybe made one or two teeth marks over the past year and a half. But, as with all plush, or fabric-type toys, none can stand up to “picking” at the edges. If Mom doesn’t pick up the Sqwuggie after we play, I sometimes like to go back to it and try to chew up the corners.

Pros: Eco-Friendly, floats, tough, fun, great size, economically priced
Cons: Sturdy, but nothing “fabric” can stand up to my picking

Eco Friendly Dog Toys
Planet Dog Orbee Tuff Orbo

Orbee Tuff Orbo. This is one of the first toys I ever had. When I was a puppy, Mom put tiny pieces of healthy dog food inside it for me to bounce around and get out. It was pretty entertaining!
Over the past year, my play-style has changed a bit. I really prefer to play fetch, chase, and tug with Mom.

When Mom is playing fetch with me and the Orbo, I really enjoy it; however, I never bring the toy to her on my own to play. But, when Mom tosses it up in the air for me to catch, it really is quite fun!

Pros: Eco-Friendly, made in the USA, floats, tough, fun if someone is tossing, great size, economically priced, easy to clean
Cons: Treat spot a little small for much food

Planet Dog Orbee Tuff Bone Review

The Orbee Tuff Bone is another Planet Dog Toy that has been in my toy box since I was a little puppy. I’ve always enjoyed playing fetch with Mom and my Orbee Bone. Even if she isn’t playing with me, I might toss this bone around in the air by myself (of course it’s always more fun with Mom).

What I really like about this dog toy is that we can bring it to the beach on our dog adventures, and it floats so I can retrieve it! It’s nice and bright, so I can easily see it. I have the small, green Planet Dog Orbee Bone, so it’s the perfect size for retrieving.

Pros: Eco-Friendly, made in the USA, floats, tough, fun for fetching and tossing, great size, economically priced, easy to clean
Cons: None

Chew Guard Dragon Review

The Chew Guard Dragon is another of my ultimate favorite plush dog toys. Over the past year and a half, I’ve had Booth, my green dragon, and Puff, my blue dragon. They stand up to a lot of extreme dog tugging and shaking. I really get down and dirty tossing and pulling these two toys around with Mom.

But, once again, as with all plush or fabric-type dog toys, none can stand up to “picking” at the edges. Just like the Sqwuggie, if Mom doesn’t pick up my green dragon after we play, I sometimes like to go back to it and try to chew up the ears.

Pros: Tough, fun, great size, economically priced
Cons: Sturdy, but nothing “fabric” can stand up to my picking

Atomic Treat Ball Review

The Atomic Treat Ball Interactive Dog Toy is another dog toy that I’ve had since I was a puppy. This dog toy is meant to hold dry dog food or healthy dog treats for a fun feeding opportunity. I knock it around mostly with my feet, and my healthy dog treats fall out of the top hole. The Atomic Treat Ball has 3 chambers that make the dog food or dog treats come out more slowly, for longer enjoyment and more of a challenge.

Fun interactive dog toys.
I Can’t See!

Sometimes when I’m hungry, I go back to the food-dispensing dog toy and knock it around to see if any more nibbles will fall out. When I’m desperate, I even toss it at my Mom hoping she will put more in it! Doesn’t usually work, though, but I’ll keep trying.

Pros: Tough, dog food dispensing toy, great size, economically priced, easy to clean, variety of sizes
Cons: Doesn’t float, too big for me to catch
