I like to provide a little catchup for those who are new to my blog.

One of my soapboxes is to teach and remind pet parents to carefully evaluate each and every product they use for or on their pets. In the case of products that have an ingredient panel, this means flipping over the item and reading each and every ingredient listed in the product, not just the active ingredients.

Once you get into this habit, you may actually start to get angry at how many nasty and toxic ingredients are actually in pet products. This is particularly true for dog grooming products and pet shampoo. “Natural” may not be as safe and pure as you thought.

I’ve been working with 4-Legger since 2016 on various projects and dog shampoo reviews. In a nutshell, they are a brand I’ve come to trust and love. They do not use synthetic ingredients in their pet grooming products. That’s a really big deal in the grooming industry. Now, on to the review.

4-Legger Results

What can I say? I love using 4-Legger products on Dexter. As I expected, 4-Legger’s USDA Certified Organic Lavender Dog Shampoo with Organic Calendula and Organic St. John’s Wort performed great! The lavender scent was very calming, and Dexter seemed to enjoy the scent, too.

After fully rinsing and drying Dexter, his coat was bright, clean, and his whites were white and his reds were bright. He always looks so good after his 4-Legger baths. People are always petting and saying hello to Dexter, and about half of the people always remark at how soft and bright his fur is. I’m always so pleased with our results, but even more importantly, I know that 4-Legger’s dedication to synthetic-free, organic, and non-toxic pet grooming products is not just lip service, but their passion.

Dexter and I are reviewing 4-Legger’s new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe line. Today, I’m going to tell you about their Lemongrass and Hemp organic dog shampoo. A quick recap for those of you new to my holistic pet care blog and my personal philosophy when it comes to using products for any of my pets.

I’m an ingredient reader first. Nope, I don’t just read the front of the package, but I flip the package over and read each ingredient, active and non-active. Then, if there are any ingredients I don’t know the risk factors of, or what they are, I do my research before using them. This goes for every product I use or feed, even supplements.

Pet grooming products are notorious for including synthetic and harmful ingredients. Lucky for me, I have been working with and using the 4-Legger brand since 2016. There aren’t any scary or harmful ingredients, no sneaky marketing, just synthetic-free, clean, simple, and beneficial ingredients.

When 4-Legger reached out to me to test and review their new certified organic dog shampoo with aloe juice, it was a no-brainier. I was all in.

What makes 4-Legger’s organic dog shampoo with aloe juice unique is that they have eliminated the water portion of the natural dog shampoo and replaced it with organic aloe juice. This change makes their organic dog shampoo even more moisturizing and hydrating than ever before. It also makes it the first dog shampoo company in the world to develop an aloe based USDA Certified Organic formulation! That is amazing!

Aloe vera is a natural healer helping relieve dry, flaky, and itchy skin. Combined with shea butter, sunflower oil, coconut oil, and olive oil to aid in skin and itch relief. This combination of moisturizing ingredients makes your dog’s coat silky smooth. For this review, I used 4-Legger’s Moisturize (Lemongrass and Hemp) formula.

USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Lemongrass and Hemp Ingredients: Organic Aloe Juice, Organic Saponified Oils (Coconut, Shea Butter, Olive, Sunflower, and Jojoba), Organic Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Lemongrass Essential Oil, Organic Rosemary Essential Oil, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Rosemary Extract

4-Legger’s organic hemp dog shampoo is a powerhouse at bringing moisture back to a dog’s fur and skin. It’s a perfect organic and natural dog shampoo for dry skin and to help eliminate dog odor. The all-organic ingredients like organic lemongrass essential oil and hemp seed oil are beneficial for toning and maintaining your dog’s natural skin moisture without blocking their pores.

If you are looking for the best organic dog flea shampoo, this may be just what the holistic veterinarian recommends. The organic lemongrass not only gets rid of the doggy smell, it also provides a natural flea deterrent. It’s a perfect addition to your dog’s natural flea-and-tick regimen. In aromatherapy, lemongrass is used to revitalize the mind and soul. As a bonus, it provides antibacterial, anti-fungal properties.

The organic hemp oil is great for all skin types and rejuvenates the skin by providing soothing relief for irritated skin. The organic and THC-free hemp seed oil also provides moisture without blocking the pores and helps balance the skin’s natural sebum. This is a great dog shampoo for allergies and itchy skin.

As with all my experiences with 4-Legger, this formula performed amazingly! First, the lemony smell was lovely. To date, it’s my favorite, best-smelling dog shampoo. Okay, I love all their scents, but this was really refreshing. Just a little reminder for those new to chemical-free dog shampoos. It’s important to rinse thoroughly, more than you might think. This line is also concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

Dexter’s coat came out clean, bright, and soft. As a matter of fact, we went on a dog outing the next day and three different people told me how soft he was. I’m always so happy at the results I get from 4-Legger products, and their new USDA certified organic dog shampoo with aloe line is truly amazing, Dexter’s coat is just so bunny soft.

If you are looking for a natural and organic dog shampoo without any hidden ingredients, I can highly recommend checking out 4-Legger’s dog shampoo lines.  Order today with promo code RaiseNaturally20 for 20% off your first order.

As you may recall, Dexter and I are reviewing 4-Legger’s new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe line. Just a quick recap for those new to my natural pet care blog. I’m an adamant label reader when choosing pet products for both Dexter the Dog and Nutter the Cat. Every ingredient inside their pet products counts. Not just what’s excluded from a product, but what’s INCLUDED in the product.

4-Legger has been my go-to natural dog shampoo since 2016. I don’t recall how I first met the gals behind 4-Legger, but I was hooked as soon as I read a few of their organic dog shampoo ingredient panels. The ingredients inside their lines are synthetic-free, clean, simple, and beneficial. When they reached out to me to test and review their new certified organic dog shampoo with aloe juice, I was all in.

In 4-Legger’s organic dog shampoo with aloe juice, they have eliminated the water portion of the natural dog shampoo and replaced it with organic aloe juice. By making this switch, the shampoo offers more moisturizing and hydration benefits. Aloe vera is a natural healer helping relieve dry, flaky, and itchy skin.

They didn’t stop there. To aid in skin and itch relief, shea butter, sunflower oil, coconut oil, and olive oil are included in the ingredients. This combination makes your dog’s coat silky smooth. For this review, I used 4-Legger’s Cooling (Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil) formula.

USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil Ingredients: Organic aloe juice, organic saponified oils (coconut, shea butter, olive, sunflower, & jojoba), organic vegetable glycerin, organic peppermint essential oil, organic tea tree oil, organic eucalyptus essential oil, organic rosemary extract

One of the reasons I chose the peppermint-and-tea-tree oil blend next is because both peppermint and tea tree oil can be used to help deter fleas and ticks! I don’t use topical or oral tick prevention that includes harmful ingredients like pesticides. Instead, I use a variety of natural treatments and remedies to keep Dexter tick-and-flea free. By including a natural flea and tick shampoo, I’m adding a safe layer to Dexter’s regimen.

I also added this formula to Dexter’s Natural DIY dog wipes. Yet one more layer to him being pest-free. You can read how to make your own dog foot wipe in this article.

4-Legger’s concentrated tea-tree-and-peppermint dog shampoo offers many other benefits besides being a good choice to deter fleas and ticks. These essential oils are antifungal, making this a great choice for those dogs who are yeasty or have “Cheeto-smelling feet.” It’s a great alternative to medicated dog shampoo which typically contains harsh and toxic chemicals.

After-Bright, clean and soft

I wanted to address the organic tea tree oil in this dog shampoo. A poor quality tea tree oil or if used in high amounts can be toxic to pets. I will be the first to admit, I find determining the quality and safety of essential oils for pets very confusing. I’m a person who always errs on the side of caution, so I reached out to Angela, the science guru at 4-Legger to inquire about the tea tree oil used in their products. I’ve bent Angela’s ear more than once about essential oils. She’s my go-to gal! I’m going to quote her so you can get the full story on their quality oils.

“There are vast differences in quality of tea tree oils. The quality of the tea tree is, in general, based on the actual concentrations of Terpinen-4-ol (which has the anti-microbial properties) and 1,8-Cineole (a natural organic compound better known as eucalyptol, the main ingredient in eucalyptus oil). Better quality tea tree oils contain higher concentration levels of Terpinen-4-ol and lower levels of 1,8-Cineole. The high-quality standard is between 30-40% for Terpinen-4-ol and less than 7% for 1,8-Cineole and then diluted properly in the shampoo (more about that below).

Because our peppermint-and-tea-tree shampoo is USDA organic, ALL of the ingredients are USDA certified organic – from seed, growth, harvest, shipping, manufacturing, etc. are all done in compliance with the USDA regulations. This means there is zero opportunity for contamination of the ingredients and third-party validation when you see ‘Organic Peppermint essential oil’ on the label, you have 100% trust what is on the bottle is in the bottle! Beyond our commitment to pet parents, it is our commitment to the environment by using Non-GMO plants, no pesticides, and no herbicides. it is totally worth paying more for ingredients that are responsibly sourced, better quality, and better for the environment.

Diluted properly, tea tree oil is VERY beneficial. The studies that classified tea tree oil as toxic were using full strength tea tree oil. Just like with essential oils, if you use full strength topically, it can cause reactions. Recommended dilution of tea tree oil is 0.1 – 1% for topical application. Our tree oil is both diluted properly and the highest quality.

I’d not recommend this blend for cats. It would be very unlikely they would have a reaction, but typically cats don’t like the smell of tea tree oil or peppermint.”

After hearing Angela explain 4-Legger’s quality control, I felt confident with their use of tea tree oil.

The peppermint essential oil also helps fight bacterial infections, is anti-inflammatory and cooling. Peppermint also helps fight canine seborrhea (dandruff and greasiness of the skin and hair). Eucalyptus provides natural relief from bacteria, fungus, and inflammation, making this threesome a great combination for the itchy, flaky, yeasty, and stinky dog!

If you are looking for the best-smelling dog shampoo, this is right up there. As always, people’s scenting preferences are different, but if sweet peppermint is your thing, you’ll love the smell! And don’t worry, it’s not too strong, no burning of your eyes while bathing your dog.

Dexter is always a trouper for his dog bath. Can’t say he likes it, but he’s always such a tolerant and good boy. After scrubbing Dexter from head to tail, I thoroughly rinsed all the shampoo from his body and allowed him to fully air dry. Just a little reminder for those new to chemical-free dog shampoos. It’s important to rinse thoroughly, more than you might think.

Once I brushed him, I was amazed at how white his whites were and red his reds. I’ve always been happy with the way 4-Legger performs, but it still amazes me how white Dexter is after his baths without a chemical-whiting shampoo.

If you are looking for a natural and organic dog shampoo without any hidden ingredients, I can highly recommend checking out 4-Legger’s dog shampoo lines. I love 4-Legger! There, I said it. I’ve been using and reviewing their natural dog grooming products since 2016. Why? Because not only do their natural dog grooming products work, but they truly are nontoxic and synthetic-free. So, when they contacted me about their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo line, I was in!

I will have to apologize to Dexter The Dog, because I have agreed to review all five varieties of their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe Juice. No worries, Dexter won’t be receiving any extra baths, but he does have to stay in the tub longer for the photo shoots. Learn how to bathe your dog in this article.

5 new non-toxic dog shampoos to choose from

What Makes 4-Legger USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe Juice so Special?

This is the first USDA certified organic dog shampoo using safe and nontoxic organic aloe juice, organic oils, and organic essential oils. 4-Legger has truly changed the pet-grooming product industry by manufacturing the first safe and nontoxic aloe-based USDA certified organic dog shampoo made with shea butter, sunflower oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and essential oils. A truly safe and nontoxic aloe formulation that shows it meets the highest standards of the USDA with the seal on the front of the bottle.

I personally find it refreshing that a dog-grooming company truly cares about our pets and has made it their mission to provide safe, effective, and synthetic-free products for our 4-leggers. I was truly excited to dive into one of their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoos. I chose to try their USDA Certified Organic Neem Dog Shampoo first.

Besides the amazing quality of ingredients used in 4-Legger’s dog shampoos, the ingredient choices are also unique. This new line contains organic aloe vera juice as the first ingredient. Aloe has been used to nourish the body, skin, and hair for over 6,000 years. Aloe juice has been used to help treat and condition flaky skin, dry skin, and minor infections. It also has been used for hair (aka fur, in our case) to increase the health, shine, and silkiness.

Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, and Organic Vegetable Glycerin provide hydration, moisturizes, soothes inflammation, are rich in vitamins and fatty acids to aid in creating a healthy and organic dog shampoo.

The organic sweet orange essential oil is packed with Vitamin C to help repair skin, promotes healthy skin, and also helps reduce inflammation and bacteria. As an added bonus, sweet orange essential oil is uplifting emotionally.

The organic neem oil is known for its ability to repel pests, making this a good choice for the summer months. Neem oil also offers anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties and excels at cleaning and eliminating dandruff while hydrating the skin and hair follicles.

The organic rosemary extract is an antioxidant powerhouse that also doubles as a natural preservative.

After thoroughly wetting Dexter, I began to lather and scrub Dexter. For those unfamiliar with natural shampoos that don’t have any synthetic lathering agents, if you feel like you need more of a lather,  don’t increase the shampoo, increase the water.

After I scrubbed Dexter from head to tail, I began my rinse process. It’s super important to rinse thoroughly. I recommend rinsing and rinsing again. You want to ensure removing all the shampoo. Don’t forget the pits and bottom area.

Typical for nontoxic dog shampoo, Dexter’s coat felt a bit tacky when wet. But I’m very familiar with this process and feel. Once Dexter fully dried, his fur was super soft and extremely white! I gave Dexter a good brushing and was tickled at how soft he felt. I’ve always loved the quality of 4-Legger’s dog shampoos, but they were right, he was even more silky smooth. His chest fur was soft, like a bunny. Now, that’s pretty impressive.

I love that I don’t have to worry about the ingredients inside of 4-Legger’s products (but I’ll continue to always read each ingredient panel). 4-Legger uses simple, clean, all-natural ingredients. I know they are a company that truly cares about Dexter’s health and what I put on him.

The next time you are shopping for a truly nontoxic organic dog shampoo, give 4-Legger a try! Visit 4-Legger today.  Order today with promo code RaiseNaturally20 for 20% off your first order. Tell them Dexter sent you.

Reading labels is so important in our lives and our pets’ lives. It’s not about the front of the package or a brand’s advertising campaigns. In the case of pet grooming products, you may see a lot of pet grooming brands state things such as, “no artificial fragrance,” “no sulfates,” “no parabens,” “no polysorbates,” or similar claims. Those are all great things to avoid in a dog or cat grooming product. However, that doesn’t mean the product doesn’t include another ingredient you should avoid.

It’s about reading the ingredient panel. If I’m purchasing a product for my pet that has ingredients (pet food, grooming products, pet dental products, etc.) the very first thing I do is flip over the product and read the ENTIRE ingredient panel. I need to know exactly what’s inside a product, so I can make my determination if it’s a product I feel safe and comfortable using with Dexter or Nutter. If there is not an ingredient panel, back on the shelf it goes!

How to Understand a Pet Grooming Product Label

I’m not a chemist, nor do I expect a pet parent to understand what they are reading on a pet product label. However, that doesn’t mean I’m off the hook at figuring it all out. My pets count on me to find the answers and to make the safest decisions for them.

The Internet is your friend! When I’m looking at a new grooming product, the first place I visit is The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database website. They have an amazing search function where you can input an ingredient hit search, and it will provide you with a summary of the ingredient and a safety rating. For the most part, EWG’s database provides me with all the information I need to make my decision. However, if an ingredient does not turn up any results, my next step is a general Internet search. I tend to type the ingredient name then “side effects” or “toxicity” and read up on the ingredient.

Top 5 Ingredients to Avoid in Your Pet’s Grooming Products

  1. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)-Links to cancer, stomach disorder, loss of memory, and immune dysfunction.
  2. Polysorbates (20, 40, 60, 80)-Organ system toxicity, commonly contaminated with the cancer-causing 1,4-dioxane.
  3. Propylene Glycol- Liver and kidney toxin, skin irritant (skin, eyes, lungs), contact dermatitis, and organ system toxicity.
  4. Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Coco Sulfate, TEA, Lauryl Sulfate, MEA)-Organ system toxicity, skin irritations, may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane.
  5. Parabens- Preservatives that are known endocrine disrupters; elevated estrogens can cause cancers of the uterus, bladder, and breast.

Now, remember, those listed above are just my top 5. There tend to be more harmful ingredients used vs. good ingredients, so don’t forget to read the entire label.

When it comes to toxic grooming ingredients, there really isn’t a reason they need to be inside my pet’s product. There are enough pet grooming products that are truly nontoxic that I don’t see the need to use unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals on my pets.

I know you want to hop over to EWG’s database and start with the first ingredient on your pet’s shampoo and work your way all the way down the list. Did you find any ingredients that weren’t in the green? If so, check out 4-Legger’s line of organic pet grooming products. Your pet will thank you. Order today with promo code RaiseNaturally20 for 20% off your first order.

Give Your Dog A Healthy Bath with 4-Legger-The ingredients you use on your dog’s skin is just as important as the quality of food they eat. 4-Legger Organic Dog Shampoo Review

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

I’m often asked how often to give a dog a bath. The answer is that your dog should have a bath as often as necessary. If he’s a dirty dog, dog bathing may be every two weeks. Dexter gets a dog bath about every 2-4 weeks, depending on his activities.

It’s important to use the best dog shampoo when you are bathing your dog. Unfortunately, claims on dog shampoos, such as ‘natural dog shampoo,’ or ‘without xyz ingredient,’ sometimes can be misleading. The front of your natural dog shampoo means nothing—it’s the entire ingredient panel that you must read and understand.

Six months ago I reviewed 4-Legger’s Conditioning Shampoo and fell in love with it. Today, I’m going to talk about their Unscented and Hypoallergenic Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Aloe.

4-Legger’s unscented hypoallergenic organic dog shampoo is geared toward dogs with very sensitive skin or sensitivity to aromas. The ultra-gentle dog shampoo cleans and moisturizes with organic oils and soothing aloe vera, without stripping the natural oils from your dog’s coat.

But wait, there’s more! This isn’t your typical all-natural shampoo for itchy skin or allergies—it’s much more than that. This organic dog shampoo can be customized with your own high quality, certified organic essential oil blends! This is perfect for those dog parents, working with a holistic veterinarian on a medical issue or skin condition, who can use a little extra help in the grooming department. Just tell your veterinarian and they can advise you on what essential oils to add to your blend.

Custom Dog Shampoo Blends

It’s important to note that essential oils can be very helpful, but they are also very potent. Dogs are not small humans, and should not be treated the same. Some common essential oils you may see in pet products that I personally avoid are anise, clove, oregano, red or white thyme, and wintergreen. Keep in mind that every dog is different and some may have dermatitis as a result of using essential oils. Do a small patch test before you bathe your dog in your custom dog shampoo to make sure he’s not sensitive to it.

A few pointers in selecting and formulating your custom dog shampoo.

  • Use high-quality, certified organic essential oils
  • No more than 6 drops of essential oils per ounce
  • Mix up 2-ounce containers to ensure you enjoy the blend

Before I go into two blends I made for Dexter, I wanted to provide you with the ingredients inside the 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo. This is something I feel is an important part of my pet product reviews, so I always like to provide the entire ingredient panel for you. Ingredients: Saponified organic oils of coconut, olive, and jojoba, organic aloe vera, and rosemary extract (preservative). That’s it. All safe and healthy ingredients that I feel totally comfortable using on Dexter as often as he needs a dog bath.

Natural Tick Shampoo Blend

  • 2 ounces 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo
  • 3 drops Cedarwood (Atlas Cedar), Cedrus atlantica
  • 3 drops Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens
  • 3 drops Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus
  • 3 drops Myrrh, Commiphora myrrha

Immune Booster Shampoo Blend

When bathing your dog, ensure that you fully wet your dog down from head to tail (learn how to give a dog a bath here). Shake your custom organic dog shampoo and apply to the palm of your hand and rub throughout your dog’s coat. Because 4-Legger doesn’t use chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate (a chemical to produce foam and lather), you will notice the consistency is thinner than you may expect. But don’t worry—you still need to use only a small amount, just add more water to increase suds. If you find you really miss the foam, 4-Legger offers a Foamer Bottle which has a special pump that infuses air into the liquid shampoo as it is pumped from the bottle.

After Dexter fully dried and I brushed him out, I was once again pleased with the results. Dexter’s white was white, and his reds were red. He was smooth and silky, and had a fresh, clean scent.

I am very pleased with the way 4-Legger Conditioning Shampoo performed during bathing, rinsing, and brushing. But most importantly, I’m confident in their high-quality ingredients. I know it’s a safe and natural shampoo I can use regularly on Dexter. I’m thrilled with the ability to add my own certified organic essential oils to make a custom blend for Dexter.

If you are looking for a natural dog shampoo, I highly recommend 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo. This is a great natural dog shampoo that you can feel comfortable using, and know it will do a great job getting your dog clean. Order today with promo code RaiseNaturally20 for 20% off your order.

Are you are looking for the best natural dog shampoo or the most absorbent dog towel? Bathing a dog is a necessity for most of us. Dexter The Dog hates having a dog bath, but with his long fur and adventurous nature, it is something that we do about every 3-4 weeks. This makes it especially important to me to ensure the dog grooming products I use are safe and non-toxic, and help Dexter feel good during and after his bath. Well, as good as he can feel. ;)

As a Dog Mom with a focus on raising a healthy, natural dog, everything that comes into contact with Dexter comes under scrutiny. I have to think about Dexter’s food, the ingredients in his food, our yard, heartworm and flea prevention, and dog grooming products, including his dog shampoo. Doing so much research on each ingredient and each product can be daunting at times, but who’s worth it? Dexter’s worth it, Nutter‘s worth it!

Watch video review.

Dexter The Dog is a very active Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is cursed with frequent baths because he loves to get dirty. He’s never a fan of bathing, but he’s always a trooper and very cooperative. When I’m looking for a natural dog shampoo, the first thing I do is flip over the dog shampoo bottle and read the entire ingredient panel. I avoid a long list of ingredients, including paraphens, sulfates, sodium lauryl sulfate, polyethylene glycol, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol, and many more. I am by no means a chemist, so I start my ingredient checking on EWG Skin Deep’s Cosmetic Database. Here, I am able to plug in any ingredient and see the risk factors involved with that ingredient and make my choice from there.

Today, I want to talk about 4-Legger conditioning shampoo. True to form, I read the entire ingredient panel and looked up each ingredient on the EWG website for toxicity. Every ingredient in this natural dog shampoo came back “green,” meaning little to no hazard. When considering ingredients, I also take into account what the product is being used for. For example, I would not feed Dexter a product that contains vegetable glycerine, as it tends to give him loose stools. I also would not feed him something with guar gum because that can bind the colon. However, for a topical product, these two ingredients are just fine and cause no concern.

4-Legger Conditioning Shampoo Ingredients: Saponified Organic Coconut, Olive, and Jojoba Oils, Vegetable Glycerine, Cedarwood Essential Oil, Organic Guar Gum, Peppermint Essential Oil, Rosemary Essential Oil and Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Rosemary Extract, Organic Aloe Vera

Now that the ingredients in 4-Legger shampoo check out, it’s bath time. Sorry, Dexter! Right away, I was greeted with the pleasant smell of peppermint. It was not overpowering – it was just the right amount. After thoroughly wetting Dexter, I poured some of the natural dog shampoo into the palm of my hand and applied to Dexter and began massaging it through his coat.

Natural Dog Shampoo
Natural Dog Shampoo

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the shampoo lathered, since it did not contain typical foaming agents Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Most shampoo manufacturers use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate to create their foaming action, which can cause organ toxicity. But 4-Legger was able to create a foaming action without the use of toxic chemicals.

After massaging the shampoo from head to tail, I rinsed Dexter with warm water. A proper rinse is always key in a good dog bath. If you do not rinse thoroughly, your dog’s coat will have a sticky texture when it dries. After a good rinsing, I towel-dried Dexter, put on his dog drying jacket, and waited for him to fully dry.

After Dexter was dry, I brushed him out. His coat was bright white and chestnut with a nice shine and a fresh scent when I smelled him. I am very pleased with the way 4-Legger Conditioning Shampoo performed during bathing, rinsing, and brushing. This is a great natural dog shampoo that you can feel comfortable using, and know it will do a great job getting your dog clean.

I am happy to report, 2 weeks after Dexter’s bath, he is still silky and looking good, even after our Vermont vacation! A big thanks to 4-Legger for their wonderful product and taking such care in providing a natural and safe dog shampoo line.

Non Toxic Dog Shampoo

I keep trying to tell Mom that I really don’t need to have a dog bath. Really, I smell just fine the way I am. She seems to disagree. Mom believes in a healthy lifestyle for dogs, which I guess that’s what I am. On her quest to find me the healthiest, non-toxic dog products, dog shampoo is on her radar. While doing research on finding me a safe, non-toxic dog shampoo, she found this website Skin Deep where you can put in cosmetic type ingredients and find out what possible harmful side effects they have. This is where Mom starts her search.

Dr.Harvey’s was kind enough to send Mom a sample of Dr. Harvey’s Organic Herbal Shampoo to try. I Organic Dog Shampooknow it was kind on their part, but they aren’t helping me out at all! Ok, I guess to keep me chemical-free they are. I have to admit, it did have a pretty calming scent. That must be the lavender oil.

Off to the bath I went. This time, Mom took me to Sheri May Meyers Pet Styling Salon in Holland, Ohio for my dog bath. They were kind enough to loan us their professional dog-grooming tub. If you want to learn some tips on how to give your dog a bath, check out Mom’s post how to give a dog a bath.

After Mom fully wetted me down, she poured some of the Dr. Harvey’s Organic Herbal Shampoo into her hand and started to massage my body. The organic dog shampoo had light lather. This is something that some people may need to get used to. most shampoo manufacturers use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate to create their foaming action. However, these are not the safest ingredients. Dr. Harvey’s Organic Herbal Shampoo does not use these ingredients, which is a definite plus!

The fresh scent of lavender continued to fill my bathing area. It was quite an enjoyable smell for both Mom and me. After Mom scrubbed me all over, she rinsed me with warm water. During the rinse process, my coat had a bit of a sticky texture. For those not accustomed to using non-toxic dog shampoos, or non-toxic human shampoos, this texture might be something to get used to. But no need to fear, the bath water rinsed clean and all the shampoo rinsed out well.

Once I dried, I had my usual silky texture. Mom towel dried me (click for review) and then put my drying coat on. Once I completely dried, she brushed me. I came out very white, had a clean shine, and looked fresh. I have to admit after my bath and brushing is over, I am one handsome dude. Don’t you agree? Mom said she was very happy with the way Dr. Harvey’s Organic Herbal Shampoo made my coat feel and look. But most importantly to her, the use of a chemical-free dog shampoo was number one in her book.

So what’s not inside Dr. Harvey’s Organic Herbal Shampoo? No detergent, chemicals, synthetics, harsh soaps, sulfates, parabens, fragrance, artificial colors or animal by-products (eeeww). I guess I am pretty handsome now.

And the good stuff inside: All of Dr. Harvey’s skincare products feature organic herbals and pure, human-grade ingredients, and are perfect for dogs with dry, allergy-prone skin. Their custom designed formulas are gentle, free from SLS, DEA, and parabens. Dr. Harvey’s products are earth-friendly, biodegradable, safe for outdoor use, made in the USA and never, ever tested on animals.

Dr. Harvey’s Organic Herbal Shampoo Ingredients: Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Aloe Vera, Vegetable Glycerine, Organic Chamomile Extract, Organic Stinging Nettles Extract, Organic Sage Extract, Organic Calendula Extract, Organic Hops Extract, St. John’s Wort Extract, Horsetail Extract, Lavender Oil, Organic Rosemary Extract

My verdict: Dr. Harvey’s Organic Herbal Shampoo was a great, non-toxic dog shampoo. I still don’t like baths, but if I have to have one, this shampoo is great.

Pros: Great ingredients, worked well, didn’t need a lot, moisturizing, gentle, made in the USA, use of organic ingredients, economically priced

Cons: You might need to get used to the low lather and texture when washing out

Whew! I lucked out of a bath review again. I mean that just because I don’t like getting a dog bath. My friend Sango bailed me out on this dog shampoo review. Thank you, Sango! Pop’s Pet Organics was kind enough to send Mom a bottle of their Lemongrass & Neem Insect Away Pet Shampoo. If you have been following Mom and me, you know that we practice a safer, less chemical way to keep flea and ticks off of me. You can check out Mom’s article on Safe Flea Control here. Pop’s Pet Organics Insect Away Pet Shampoo has naturally-extracted lemongrass and neem oils which are known to repel fleas, ticks, and other pesky insects. You can even wash your dog’s collar in it for extra repelling action. Of course, it has other great ingredients for a good dog shampoo. Sorry, Sango – time to give Pop’s Pet organics Insect Away Pet Shampoo a go.

Sango’s Mom said it had a nice lather and a fresh scent, and felt good during Sango’s dog bath. She wasn’t used to the liquid type dog shampoo, so squirted a bit too much out and missed her hands. That will happen. So, know the shampoo isn’t as thick as you might be used to. The Pop’s Pet Organics Insect Away Pet Shampoo rinsed off well, but had that sticky feel. This is common in some non-toxic shampoos and something you might need to get used to. But no need to fear, the bath water rinsed clean and all the shampoo rinsed out well. Once Sango was dry, she had a smooth, soft texture, not sticky at all.

Her Mom was very happy with the results of the Pop’s Pet Organics Insect Away Pet Shampoo. Sango felt very clean, fresh, and soft to the touch. Her fur did not get staticky like it normally does without a conditioner, and she has not been knotting as usual. Sango’s white came through brilliantly and looks great and still smells great!

Now it’s time to look at Pop’s Pet Organics Insect Away Pet Shampoo ingredients and benefits. A nice, safe alternative for flea and tick control. Nontoxic, no harsh detergents or chemicals, vegan and cruelty-free, made in the USA. Made with Certified Organic Oils and Naturally Extracted Botanicals. Not bad!Ingredients: Saponified organic coconut, olive and jojoba oils, natural essential oil blend including naturally extracted lemongrass, neem and catnip, organic aloe vera, and naturally extracted rosemary as a natural preservative.

Looking good Sango!

Pros: Great ingredients, natural flea and tick repellent, smells great, nice lather, worked well, didn’t need a lot, made in the USA, economically priced

Cons: You might need to get used to the texture when washing out

Pop’s Pet Organics Insect Away Pet Shampoo is a paws up in my book!
Thank you again Pop’s Pet Organics for allowing us to review your shampoo.
