Healthy and natural dog chews

Most dogs love to chew. Chewing is such a nice behavior for dogs. It helps keep their teeth clean, fights boredom, and if you give your dog healthy dog chews, can even provide nutritional benefits.

When I’m searching for the best dog chew bones for Dexter, I follow a few personal guidelines. First, I think it’s important to remember, a dog chew bone is going to be chewed on and possibly eaten, therefore, I’m not a fan of plastic bones. Nope, not going to feed my dog plastic. Second, if it’s a processed type of dog bone and has an ingredient label, I want to read that label and ensure it’s truly something I would want Dexter to eat. As of this posting, I have not found a processed dog bone that I would feed Dexter. Let’s just take a look at one of the popular “natural” examples.

Potato Starch, Glycerin, Powdered Cellulose, Lecithin, Yeast, Malt Extract, Lupine, Annatto Extract Color, Alfalfa Extract.

Although nothing in this natural dog chew will immediately harm your dog, it’s not healthy, and starch is not a great addition to a dog’s diet. There isn’t anything healthy in this ingredient panel, so it would be like eating a king-sized candy bar. For Dexter, consuming glycerin is a short trip to having diarrhea!

Here’s another popular dental dog chew’s ingredients.

Wheat flour, wheat gluten, glycerin, gelatin, oat fiber, water, lecithin, natural poultry flavor, minerals (dicalcium phosphate, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, magnesium amino acid chelate, zinc amino acid chelate, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, manganese amino acid chelate, selenium, potassium iodide), dried apple pomace, choline chloride, fruit juice color, vitamins ( dl-alpha tocopherol acetate [source of vitamin E], vitamin B12 supplement, d-calcium pantothenate [vitamin B5], niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement [vitamin B2], vitamin D3 supplement, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride [vitamin B6], thiamine mononitrate [vitamin B1], folic acid), turmeric color.

Wow is right. That’s a lot of ingredients for one dental dog chew. And all those vitamins, they’re synthetic. So, no. I do not feed Dexter either of these dog chews, nor would I recommend them. But I do like to provide Dexter with healthy, real dog bones and chews, something I can feel good about giving Dexter and know that he can actually benefit nutritionally from eating.

Duck feet for dogs

I love giving Dexter natural duck feet for dogs. And, recently, I have introduced all natural chicken feet for dogs into his chewing rotation, and here’s why I love bird feet. 🙂

Both chicken and duck feet are a natural source of chondroitin, glucosamine and collagen. Together, this provides joint health by producing joint fluid, reduces the risk of brittle bones, improves mobility, and helps maintain healthy teeth and gums.

All natural duck and chicken feet for dogs to chew

Chondroitin and glucosamine are beneficial to all life-stages. Recently, one of Dexter’s vets recommended I provide him with regular glucosamine and chondroitin. Instead of giving him a supplement, I have increased his consumption of duck feet, chicken feet, beef gullet, and duck necks. I rotate these various forms into his diet, to ensure the most diverse form of nutrition.

The Healthy Companion Company was kind enough to allow me to try and review both their chicken feet for dogs and duck feet for dogs. Quality ingredients is always one of my top priorities when choosing a product for Dexter. The Healthy Companion Company manufactures all their treats in the US, AND all the ingredients are sourced from US farmers. Both their chicken and duck feet come from antibiotic and hormone-free birds.

Duck Feet Ingredients: Duck Feet

Chicken Feet Ingredients: Chicken Feet

That’s it. No preservatives, or anything added. Just 100% dehydrated duck or chicken feet. Both healthy dog chews are dehydrated, which means they retain their dense nutrients. I’ve regularly given Dexter duck feet dog chews in the past, and I have to admit, these feet from The Healthy Companion Company are really nice. What I appreciate from this company is that their feet are a bit drier than the ones I’ve had before.

Healthy dog chew bones

And Dexter? He loves a good dehydrated duck foot. And the chicken feet? He gave those a green light too. Dehydrated duck and chicken feet are typically a crunchy, edible dog chew. Edible is important. Please remember to include this into his daily food calorie calculation, so that your dog does not pack on the pounds. Cutting a little of his daily food and replacing it with a duck or chicken foot is completely healthy and nutritious, so you can swap with confidence or add a bit more exercise for the day.

When giving your dog a new chew, I always recommend holding the chew and allowing your dog to chew and eat with you holding one end. This helps ensure that your dog can safely manage the chew and if not, you are able to remove it without needing to try to chase your dog down. Once you feel comfortable with how your dog will consume his snack, please still supervise.

If you are looking for natural, healthy dog bones or dog chew, I highly recommend checking out The Healthy Companion Company’s line of duck and chicken feet. They also provide all-natural dehydrated meat treats if you are looking for healthy dog training treats! Don’t forget to tell them that Dexter the Dog sent you.

I love 4-Legger! There, I said it. I’ve been using and reviewing their natural dog grooming products since 2016. Why? Because not only do their natural dog grooming products work, but they truly are nontoxic and synthetic-free. So, when they contacted me about their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo line, I was in!

I will have to apologize to Dexter The Dog, because I have agreed to review all five varieties of their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe Juice. No worries, Dexter won’t be receiving any extra baths, but he does have to stay in the tub longer for the photo shoots. Learn how to bathe your dog in this article.

5 new non-toxic dog shampoos to choose from

What Makes 4-Legger USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe Juice so Special?

This is the first USDA certified organic dog shampoo using safe and nontoxic organic aloe juice, organic oils, and organic essential oils. 4-Legger has truly changed the pet-grooming product industry by manufacturing the first safe and nontoxic aloe-based USDA certified organic dog shampoo made with shea butter, sunflower oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and essential oils. A truly safe and nontoxic aloe formulation that shows it meets the highest standards of the USDA with the seal on the front of the bottle.

I personally find it refreshing that a dog-grooming company truly cares about our pets and has made it their mission to provide safe, effective, and synthetic-free products for our 4-leggers. I was truly excited to dive into one of their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoos. I chose to try their USDA Certified Organic Neem Dog Shampoo first.

Besides the amazing quality of ingredients used in 4-Legger’s dog shampoos, the ingredient choices are also unique. This new line contains organic aloe vera juice as the first ingredient. Aloe has been used to nourish the body, skin, and hair for over 6,000 years. Aloe juice has been used to help treat and condition flaky skin, dry skin, and minor infections. It also has been used for hair (aka fur, in our case) to increase the health, shine, and silkiness.

Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, and Organic Vegetable Glycerin provide hydration, moisturizes, soothes inflammation, are rich in vitamins and fatty acids to aid in creating a healthy and organic dog shampoo.

The organic sweet orange essential oil is packed with Vitamin C to help repair skin, promotes healthy skin, and also helps reduce inflammation and bacteria. As an added bonus, sweet orange essential oil is uplifting emotionally.

The organic neem oil is known for its ability to repel pests, making this a good choice for the summer months. Neem oil also offers anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties and excels at cleaning and eliminating dandruff while hydrating the skin and hair follicles.

The organic rosemary extract is an antioxidant powerhouse that also doubles as a natural preservative.

Bunny soft and cotton white

4-Legger’s USDA Certified Organic Neem Dog Shampoo with Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil Ingredients: Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil, Organic Neem Oil and Organic Rosemary Extract

After thoroughly wetting Dexter, I began to lather and scrub Dexter. For those unfamiliar with natural shampoos that don’t have any synthetic lathering agents, if you feel like you need more of a lather,  don’t increase the shampoo, increase the water.

After I scrubbed Dexter from head to tail, I began my rinse process. It’s super important to rinse thoroughly. I recommend rinsing and rinsing again. You want to ensure removing all the shampoo. Don’t forget the pits and bottom area.

Typical for nontoxic dog shampoo, Dexter’s coat felt a bit tacky when wet. But I’m very familiar with this process and feel. Once Dexter fully dried, his fur was super soft and extremely white! I gave Dexter a good brushing and was tickled at how soft he felt. I’ve always loved the quality of 4-Legger’s dog shampoos, but they were right, he was even more silky smooth. His chest fur was soft, like a bunny. Now, that’s pretty impressive.

I love that I don’t have to worry about the ingredients inside of 4-Legger’s products (but I’ll continue to always read each ingredient panel). 4-Legger uses simple, clean, all-natural ingredients. I know they are a company that truly cares about Dexter’s health and what I put on him.

The next time you are shopping for a truly nontoxic organic dog shampoo, give 4-Legger a try! Visit 4-Legger today.  Order today with promo code RaiseNaturally20 for 20% off your order. Tell them Dexter sent you.

Healthy and motivating dog treats

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review and also has affiliate links. However, I will always try to offer my readers great product selections. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

As a positive dog trainer, I’m always recommending that my dog-training students use high-value and motivating dog treats during training. Dog training takes a lot of time, patience, and repetition, which can lead to a lot of dog-training treats. However, this does not mean that those dog training treats can’t be healthy, and even included in the dog’s daily calorie intake! As a matter of fact, I’m an advocate for using a dog’s daily food or food calories as their dog-training rewards. Here’s the rundown.

By now, you probably already know I’m a firm believer in a species-appropriate diet, which means a home-cooked or raw diet for dogs. In this diet, a dog receives a lot of real meat. After all, dogs are carnivores; you just need to take a peek at those razor-sharp teeth to realize they were made to eat meat.

When a dog is learning new behaviors or unlearning behaviors, it’s important to reward that dog often in order to make the new behavior a habit. Meat is an excellent motivator and healthy dog-training treat. And the best part is if you are incorporating meat without any other ingredients such as flour, sugars, grains, etc., you can count that meat as part of his daily food portion. Voilà, no extra calories for dog training and no fat dogs for positive-reinforcement training! Just happy, well-fed, and well-trained dogs.

When I’m looking for the best dog-training treats, I look for natural dog treats that are ideally just meat. I was beyond thrilled when I found The Healthy Companion Company and their line of wholesome meat treats. The Healthy Companion Company not only manufactures their treats in the US, but they also source all of their ingredients from local US farmers. The best part is that their meat treats are made without chemicals, preservatives, additives, and the meats are antibiotic and hormone free!

Blend of Turkey-Beef Heart-Chicken Bites Ingredients: 1/3 turkey with bone, 1/3 beef heart, and 1/3 chicken with bone.

Rabbit Formula Ingredients: Whole ground rabbit

I’m obviously over the moon with the quality of The Healthy Companion Company’s treats, and both Dexter and Nutter were going crazy when I opened the shipping box. Dexter was extremely eager to dive in, but he waited patiently as I took the photos for our natural dog treat review.

Not yet! 🙂

When Dexter finally had his first bite of the all-natural rabbit dog-treat formula, his eyes bulged out, and he looked at me for more. I obliged and gave him a few more rabbit treats. Then, we moved on to the Blend of Turkey-Beef Heart-Chicken Bites. Dexter was just as impressed and happy. I couldn’t leave Nutter The Cat out. He also gobbled them up.

Natural dog treats

These all-natural dog treats are a great size, light, and easily break apart for the perfect bite for a dog training treat. I love the fact they are thin and don’t take up much room in a pocket, which is especially important when training a dog on the go.

Perfect treats for dog training

These natural meat dog treats are dehydrated, which means they retain most of their nutrients, making these treats very nutritional. The Healthy Companion Company does not use any form of preservative, so it’s best to store the treats in the refrigerator to ensure freshness.

Because The Healthy Companion Company uses bone and organ in their antibiotic-and-hormone-free dog treats, I can easily recommend that these treats are used in replacement of a portion of a dog’s daily calories for training.

If you are looking for natural, healthy dog treats, especially for dog-training treats, I highly recommend checking out The Healthy Companion Company’s line of meat treats. They also provide all-natural dehydrated duck and chicken feet if you are looking for a healthy dog chew! Don’t forget to tell them that Dexter the Dog sent you.

Dexter the Dog is a well-traveled, highly adventurous dog. One of our favorite things to do together is to hit the open road and find new and exciting dog-friendly opportunities. However, Dexter is also a senior dog with special needs, which can sometimes limit his mobility.

His mobility may be limited, but his mind and heart still wants to participate in the family fun. When Dexter is with me, I always have his dog stroller in my car for the times Dexter needs an extra lift or a rest. However, a pet stroller isn’t always an option on some of our dog-friendly trips or adventures. Take the beach or a rocky hiking trail, for example. It’s just not possible to use Dexter’s dog stroller in these situations. I have been on the hunt for a dog sling that I can wear and place Dexter inside, but this has not been an easy task.

Dexter is not your typical small Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. No, he’s a long, tall, pushing 30 pound Cavalier! Nope, he’s not fat, he’s just our moose. 😉 Most dog front-carrier bags are made for a small dog or compact dog. Did I mention how long Dexter is? I found 4LazyLegs Pets Carrier and asked them their thoughts on their soft pet carrier sling and if they felt it would be a fit for Dexter.

4LazyLegs Pets Carrier sling review. Sometimes a dog needs a little help and a dog sling just may be the solution. #raisingyourpetsnaturally
Dexter is BIG

The great folks at 4LazyLegs offered to allow Dexter to give it a try. It holds 33 pounds, but they weren’t sure it would really fit his long and tall body as front dog slings are best for more compact dogs.

Front dog sling

When the 4LazyLegs dog sling arrived, I was impressed by the quality of the pet sling. It’s made from 100% cotton canvas and feels and looks very durable and strong. The shoulder strap is very soft and padded to allow for more comfort while carrying your small pet. The shoulder strap is also adjustable to ensure the dog sling sits at the correct potion for carrying. Inside, the sling also has adjustable drawstrings so that you can cinch up your pet inside. There is also a clip to attach to your pet’s collar or harness.

My big dog!

I was super excited to give 4LazyLegs a try. Unfortunately, as we had suspected, Dexter is just too long and tall to safely fit in the pet carrier. The dog sling is just a bit too short for him to be carried. However, they did mention they may be making a larger dog sling! I still think this is an amazing sling for pets smaller than Dexter. Dog slings are a great option for puppies too young to walk in public, dogs nervous in crowds, or special-needs dogs.

If you have a small pet that needs a little assistance, I highly recommend checking out 4LazyLegs. Tell them Dexter sent you. Visit their online store today or check them out on Amazon.

By now, you may already have heard about the amazing benefits of bone broth for dogs, cats, and ourselves. I’ve been regularly providing Dexter bone broth for the last two years. Up until now, I’ve been making his bone broth in my own kitchen. But admittedly, sometimes I run out and don’t have time to make another batch as quickly as I would like.

For the last month, I’ve been on the lookout for an organic bone broth for dogs. As luck would have it, Primalvore Premium Natural Pet Foods reached out to me about their new Collagen Boosted Bone Broth. But let me back up a bit and talk about the health benefits of bone broth in general to get you up to speed if you’re new to bone broth.

Benefits of Bone Broth for Dogs

It has been used since the beginning of mankind to nourish the body. It’s no wonder, since bone broth is a powerhouse of nutrition. Bone broth is packed with glucosamine, chondroitin, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Bone broth can help heal the gut, boost the immune system, aid in healthy joint support, combat allergies, and even helps with neurological disorders. In my opinion, bone broth should be a part of almost everyone’s regular diet.

Bone Broth is Wonderful for Sick Dogs

If your dog has a bout of diarrhea and your vet suggests a little tummy rest, bone broth is a great in-between step when it’s time to start him back on food. Because bone broth is easy to digest, doesn’t have solids, and is loaded with minerals, gelatin, and protein, bone broth can be very beneficial prior to a dog’s regular diet. It’s a great immune-booster too. You can then add the broth to your dog’s regular food as he transitions back to his normal diet.

Dexter Couldn’t Get Enough of Primalvore Collagen Boosted Bone Broth

What Makes Primalvore Collagen Boosted Bone Broth for Dogs Unique

  • Natural Collagen Peptides: Collagen Peptides are the most bio-available form of collagen, These are easy to digest without damaging the nutritional properties, including the particular group of peptides in the amino acid chain that show the greatest function in the improvement and maintenance of joint health. Clinical studies have shown that the Collagen Peptides that Primalvore uses show improvements in the mobility of older pets when regularly used for 12 weeks. This collagen not only benefits a dog’s joints, but also helps with coat and nail health, and offers a boost of protein.
  • Quality Ingredients: The starter ingredients used in Primalvore’s bone broths are made from humanely raised, human-grade free-range meat bones. The cattle are 100% grass fed and the chickens are 100% free range. The beef and chicken bone broth come from organic cow and chicken bones (no antibiotics or added hormones). Both the turkey and duck bones are also antibiotic- and hormone-free.
    • Organic turmeric is added to the beef, chicken, and turkey bone broths. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric also boosts antioxidants, which help protect our bodies from free radicals that cause damage.
    • Organic ginger is added to the duck bone broth. Ginger is actually closely related to turmeric and also has anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger is great for gut health by improving digestion and reducing nausea. The antioxidant properties in ginger have been linked to aid in brain health. One study provided rats with a ginger rhizome extract and the results showed that cognitive function and neuron density in the hippocampus of the rats were improved, while the brain infarct volume was decreased.
    • Beef Bone Broth Ingredients: Organic beef bone broth (water, organic beef bones), collagen peptides and organic turmeric
    • Chicken Bone Broth Ingredients: Organic chicken bone broth (water, organic chicken bones), collagen peptides and organic turmeric
    • Turkey Bone Broth Ingredients: Turkey bone broth (water, free range turkey bones), collagen peptides and organic turmeric
    • Duck Bone Broth Ingredients: Duck bone broth (water, free range duck bones), collagen peptides and organic ginger

Primalvore’s Bone Broth Cubes

Primalvore’s Bone Broth Process and Packaging: All their bone broth is made with human-grade ingredients and processed in a USDA/FDA approved facility. The nutrient-dense bone broth is made the traditional way, in small batches and slow simmering for up to 20 hours. This process not only provides a roasted flavor and deep color, but also allows the minerals and nutrients to be drawn out of the bones. The longer cooking time also helps the cartilage and gelatin from the bones to break down for easier digestion.

The BPA-Free stand-up pouches make this bone broth very convenient. The dog bone broth has an 18-month shelf life without the use of additives or artificial ingredients (see the ingredient label above). This is one of the reasons I connected with Primalvore. I was looking for a quality bone broth for Dexter that I would always have on hand and I could take during our travels. The twist-on and -off cap makes this process great!

After opening Dexter’s bone broth and returning the twist-on cap, I squeezed the bag to see if anything would leak out. Nope! I gave it a good hard squeeze, and no leaks.

Feeding Bone Broth

There really aren’t any hard rules about when to give your dog bone broth, but here are a few tips. Start out slow, especially if your dog is not accustomed to a change in his diet. 1 ounce of broth per 10 pounds is a good END goal. Try introducing bone broth to your dog starting out with half his daily dose.

You can add Primalvore’s bone broth directly onto your dog’s food, as a stand-alone snack, or as a drink to hydrate him during an adventure. Refrigerate unused portion for up to 7 days. You can also freeze the extra broth into portion servings if you have leftovers. This ensures you don’t waste any of the nutritional broth.

Frozen Bone Broth Cubes

Dexter thoroughly enjoyed Primalvore’s Chicken Bone Broth. It was easy to use—I just poured some over Dexter’s breakfast and he eagerly lapped it up. I am saving Primalvore’s Beef Bone Broth for our next vacation, so I can easily provide Dexter his daily bone broth on the road.

I’m also planning on using a splash in Dexter’s portable water container to encourage him to drink more during our summer outings. For whatever reason, he can be a stink-pot at drinking during adventures. I’m sure with a bit of bone broth, that won’t be an issue.

Reading labels is so important in our lives and our pets’ lives. It’s not about the front of the package or a brand’s advertising campaigns. In the case of pet grooming products, you may see a lot of pet grooming brands state things such as, “no artificial fragrance,” “no sulfates,” “no parabens,” “no polysorbates,” or similar claims. Those are all great things to avoid in a dog or cat grooming product. However, that doesn’t mean the product doesn’t include another ingredient you should avoid.

It’s about reading the ingredient panel. If I’m purchasing a product for my pet that has ingredients (pet food, grooming products, pet dental products, etc.) the very first thing I do is flip over the product and read the ENTIRE ingredient panel. I need to know exactly what’s inside a product, so I can make my determination if it’s a product I feel safe and comfortable using with Dexter or Nutter. If there is not an ingredient panel, back on the shelf it goes!

How to Understand a Pet Grooming Product Label

I’m not a chemist, nor do I expect a pet parent to understand what they are reading on a pet product label. However, that doesn’t mean I’m off the hook at figuring it all out. My pets count on me to find the answers and to make the safest decisions for them.

The Internet is your friend! When I’m looking at a new grooming product, the first place I visit is The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database website. They have an amazing search function where you can input an ingredient hit search, and it will provide you with a summary of the ingredient and a safety rating. For the most part, EWG’s database provides me with all the information I need to make my decision. However, if an ingredient does not turn up any results, my next step is a general Internet search. I tend to type the ingredient name then “side effects” or “toxicity” and read up on the ingredient.

Top 5 Ingredients to Avoid in Your Pet’s Grooming Products

  1. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)-Links to cancer, stomach disorder, loss of memory, and immune dysfunction.
  2. Polysorbates (20, 40, 60, 80)-Organ system toxicity, commonly contaminated with the cancer-causing 1,4-dioxane.
  3. Propylene Glycol- Liver and kidney toxin, skin irritant (skin, eyes, lungs), contact dermatitis, and organ system toxicity.
  4. Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Coco Sulfate, TEA, Lauryl Sulfate, MEA)-Organ system toxicity, skin irritations, may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane.
  5. Parabens- Preservatives that are known endocrine disrupters; elevated estrogens can cause cancers of the uterus, bladder, and breast.

Now, remember, those listed above are just my top 5. There tend to be more harmful ingredients used vs. good ingredients, so don’t forget to read the entire label.

When it comes to toxic grooming ingredients, there really isn’t a reason they need to be inside my pet’s product. There are enough pet grooming products that are truly nontoxic that I don’t see the need to use unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals on my pets.

I know you want to hop over to EWG’s database and start with the first ingredient on your pet’s shampoo and work your way all the way down the list. Did you find any ingredients that weren’t in the green? If so, check out 4-Legger’s line of organic pet grooming products. Please note, I am not a veterinarian. Please speak in detail with your holistic veterinarian about your dog’s care and support. They will always be your best resource.

If you have old dogs, dogs with arthritis, dogs with mobility issues, or even young healthy dogs, you should be proactive in their joint and mobility care. Often people wait until their dog is in pain, has arthritis, or even has trouble getting up from the ground before they take action. We all do it—I even fell in this category myself with Dexter.

If you’ve been following Dexter’s story, you may recall that he was diagnosed with Chiari-like Malformation (CM) and syringomyelia in 2012. CM is basically when the skull is too small to hold the brain, causing pressure on the cerebellum and medulla, and obstructing normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid. You can compare this to holding your finger over half of the opening of a hose; that pressure then causes fluid-filled cavities within the spinal cord, SM.

We’ve had our ups and downs with his disease. I’m happy to report he’s been doing well and he’s just as spunky and fun-loving as a young pup. However, just over a year ago, Dexter was getting a bit more “wobbly and bobbly” and losing his balance. It’s then that he started seeing his rehab vet, Dr. Mary L. Cardeccia, for regular physical rehabilitation to work on building his core strength and proprioception. You can read about our canine rehab in this article.

Strength Training for All Ages of Dogs

I regret that I was not more proactive in keeping Dexter strong and mobile, prior to his wobbles and weakness. Dexter and I always had regular daily exercise through walks and play, but I never actively focused on his strength and core. Strong core muscles help dogs with their movement, keep their balance, and help them get up and down. For Dexter, it’s also very important in strengthening his spine and allowing him the strength to “catch” himself and recover from a wobble.

Daily Exercise and Movement for Dogs

Have you ever heard the phrase, “use it or lose it”? This is so true when it comes to exercising with our dogs and keeping them moving. According to an article published on the John Hopkins website, “While rest is important, especially during flare-ups, lack of physical activity is associated with increased muscle weakness, joint stiffness, reduced range of motion, fatigue and general deconditioning.” As with every exercise program, it is important to know your dog’s limits and yours, start slowly, and build over time.

Canine Water Therapy / Hydrotherapy for Dogs

There are two traditional forms of dog water therapy: pool therapy and water treadmill therapy. Water therapy has a low impact on a dog’s joints. This is a great solution for dogs with a variety of joint problems and mobility issues. Water therapy also provides resistance, making this a great workout for your dog. Dexter goes to monthly underwater treadmill therapy not only to build his strength, but also to help with his proprioception. During the summer months, I also walk Dexter in shallow streams and ponds between our sessions.

Cold Laser Therapy for Dogs

Cold laser therapy uses light beams that stimulate the cells in the body and can reduce inflammation, increase blood circulation, relieve pain, and repair tissue damage. Cold laser therapy uses a laser that does not produce heat. Depending on your dog’s condition, your holistic veterinarian may recommend cold laser therapy. Dexter’s neurological condition relates to inflammation along his spine, so Dexter receives treatment on his spine about once a month. If he’s having a rough day with pain, we schedule an impromptu laser treatment, which usually gets him back on track and feeling better.

Acupuncture for Mobility

Acupuncture is another natural option for assisting with a dog’s mobility and a lot of other canine ailments, even behavioral issues. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that disease is caused by a disruption of the flow of QI, or energy. Acupuncture is applied in target points to stimulate the flow of QI, allowing the body to become balanced. For dogs with mobility concerns, the practitioner is generally focused on stimulating circulation and reducing inflammation.

Dog Chiropractic Adjustments for Mobility and Range of Motion

First, I want to stress that if you are thinking of taking your dog in for chiropractic care, you see a veterinarian, not a human chiropractor—they are NOT the same. Canine chiropractic care helps realign your dog’s joints and spine, helps with range of motion and flexibility, and can relieve pain.

Veterinarian chiropractors may solely use their hands during a dog’s adjustment, a chiropractic adjustment tool, called the Activator®, or a combination of both. Dexter has had both procedures, and responds better during and after with a hands-on approach instead of the tool. Some veterinarians will actually provide adjustment in the pool, for even a gentler approach.

Proper Weight and A Species-Appropriate Diet and Supplementation

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that excess weight on your dog’s joints and spine will increase pain and inflammation, and decrease mobility. It also leads to strain on your dog’s heart muscles and other vital organs. If there was ever a time to feel your dog’s waistline, it’s now. All dogs should have a slight tuck at the waist.

Feeding your dog a species-appropriate diet is incredibly beneficial in reducing inflammation. Dogs are carnivores, not carbidores. A processed dry dog food is extremely heavy in carbohydrates and has almost no moisture. This combination leads to inflammation, not to mention a lack of fresh vitamins, minerals and enzymes. To help reduce inflammation avoid refined carbohydrates such as sugar, sorghum, flour (wheat, oat, pea, bean, rice, corn), white rice, and potato starch to name a few. Some other foods that increase inflammation include sugar, too many omega-6 fatty acids, and corn. On the other side, there are foods and supplements that help reduce inflammation such as leafy greens, blueberries, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage), bone broth, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, beets, pineapple, glucosamine chondroitin, green-lipped mussels, and CoQ10.

The GingerLead works by gently lifting a dog’s back legs, enabling him to be in an ideal position. The GingerLead offers a very safe and secure way to help a dog get up, navigate stairs, or go for a walk. I’m guessing by now you have heard some buzz about CBD oil for dogs. On any social media outlet, a question about a dog’s anxiety or pain is sure to result in a suggestion to try CBD oil. But before diving in, it’s always a good idea to know a few facts.

Marijuana vs Hemp

Both marijuana and hemp come from the same plant genus, Cannabaceae, but they are two different plants. Hemp-derived phytocannabinoids do not contain the hallucinogenic compound Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), so they do not cause the ‘high’ associated with marijuana. To be classified as hemp, it must contain less than 0.3% of THC. Some varieties of hemp products are nearly free of THC.

Understanding Phytocannabinoids—a Little Science

Chemical compounds known as cannabinoids are found in all animals (except insects). In plant form, it is known as phytocannabinoids. Studies of phytocannabinoids show they are very effective in promoting both physical and mental health. Benefits range from helping with anxiety, reducing inflammation, combating nausea, helping in digestion, and the list goes on.

The reason phytocannabinoids can be used to treat many ailments is that all animals have an endocannabinoid system that maintains the body’s physiological, immunological and neurological systems. When there is a deficiency in endocannabinoid production, our body will utilize the addition of phytocannabinoids and will start a restoring process to bring our bodies back to balance.

Safety Considerations of Hemp-Derived Phytocannabinoids

One of the great things about Hemp-based phytocannabinoids is the safety of the product. There are no psychoactive effects, and the phytocannabinoid-rich oil is non-toxic. It is next to impossible for a pet to overdose, and it is also safe to administer with other pet medications or pet supplements. However, as always, please speak with your holistic veterinarian prior to administration.

Are Hemp-Derived Phytocannabinoids safe?

In a word, yes. Hemp-based phytocannabinoids are non-psychoactive and non-toxic. It is virtually impossible for a pet to overdose. In addition, phytocannabinoids are safe for your pets to take along with any prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Always talk to your veterinarian before adding any supplement to your pet’s regimen.

The Importance of Testing

As with a lot of popular products, quality control and evaluation are important. Various brands offer testing results to the consumer. And yes, some brands don’t test at all. For me, if a company doesn’t offer this information on their website, I would certainly inquire before making a purchase.

A few points to consider when choosing a PCR oil for your pet include: sourcing of ingredients, third-party testing of raw materials, finished product, milligrams of phytocannabinoid, free of bio-contaminants and heavy metals.

My Personal Experience with Phytocannabinoid-Rich (PCR) Oil for Dogs

Just over 9 months ago, I had a first-hand experience with Treatibles Phytocannabinoid-Rich Oil. I worked with one of my dog training clients on using the Treatibles PCR Oil with her anxious dog, Sora. At the same time, I had my own bottle for Dexter for help with breakthrough pain from his neurological disorder. You can read about both our positive experiences in this article.

As Dexter’s disease progresses, I’m always trying to stay one step ahead of the train and help Dexter stay as pain-free and spunky as his heart desires. Over the last couple of months, I’ve noticed he’s becoming a bit more wobbly and bobbly. I spoke with Dexter’s canine rehabilitation veterinarian, Dr. Mary L. Cardeccia on what I could do to help, and she prescribed Phytocannabinoid-Rich (PCR) Oil twice a day.

Because I always want to know the why and how, I asked her to explain what we hope the PCR oil will do for Dexter. She offered this explanation, “As for the hemp extract, phytocannabinoids and terpenes (normal components of the hemp plant; CBD is one of the phytocannabinoids (cannabidiol). Many people use “CBD oil” interchangeably with hemp oil or extract, but in reality, there are so many great components of the whole plant that it is even better to use the leaf/stem extract instead of just isolating CBD). Phytocannabinoids and terpenes have anti-inflammatory properties, pain relieving properties, and a quieting/soothing effect on the central nervous system (can control seizures), so I am hoping that using it with Dex would help on all three of those levels.” Dr. Cardeccia continued by saying, “I think that you may start seeing improvement after a few doses, as the anti-inflammatory effects should not take long, but the CNS (Central Nervous System) effects may take a couple of weeks to get to full effect.”

Natural Remedies for Neurological Disorders

Choosing a Phytocannabioind-Rich (PCR) Oil for Dexter

Of, course, I immediately thought of Treatibles, but I also didn’t want to overlook any other great brands that might fit our needs. As I started to do my research, I ran into some roadblocks when it came to the testing and/or results of the PCR Oils for dogs. Some companies did not offer any testing, while results for other products showed some THC, although under the 0.3% limit. The other test result that I found were in the residual solvent analysis. Even though under 400 PPM would pass, all the companies that I found still had some residue, with the exception of Treatibles. I do understand that the other brands are still deemed safe and there may be a brand I overlooked, but for me, it was just too hard to ignore.

I contacted Treatibles for more information on their testing and products, and learned that Treatibles’ third-party lab tests at every stage, from the raw materials to the finished product. Every batch is tested to determine the exact milligrams of phytocannabinoids in every product. They also test to ensure each product is free of heavy metals and bio-contaminants (none detected in tests), and they provide the testing results for each product on their website. The hemp used for their products is grown in the USA and is virtually free of THC (none detected in tests). Test results can vary from crop to crop, so check the test results prior to purchasing.

All Treatibles products contain phytocannabinoid-rich oil extracted from the whole hemp plant, which, as Dr. Cardeccia explained, creates a synergy effect by utilizing therapeutic phytocannabinoids and terpenes, providing a full spectrum of benefits for pets.

Treatibles actually reformulated their product to use MCT Coconut Oil as the base. Coconut oil has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, contains antioxidants, and is rich in lauric acid, making this a great addition!

I am very happy with my decision to use Treatibles Phytocannabinoid-Rich Oil with MCT Coconut Oil for Dexter. I am hoping to be able to see some improvement of Dexter’s mobility in the next few weeks. The good news is that we won’t be doing any harm in trying, and by adding daily PCR oil, I am reducing Dexter’s inflammation, which is always a good thing.

Don’t let your dog suffer needlessly. Visit Treatibles today~!

Treatibles Compassion Certified hard chews, dropper bottle oils and gel caps are infused with phytocannabinoid rich oil (PCR) derived from medicinal grade hemp grown in the USA. Treatibles help to promote healthy joints and digestion, instill calm and balance, and assist pets with anxiety, discomfort, seizures, end of life comfort, and more.

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

Oh, Nutter The Cat. My family happily joke about Nutter’s old age and how he will outlive us all! I rescued Nutter in 2002, and he was estimated to be about three years old then. Nutter’s vet at the time said he had a heart murmur and issues with his back patellas, and that he would likely have a short life. That was 16 years ago, bringing Nutter to the ripe old age of at least 19!

I’ve since left that vet, and had Nutter’s one patella fixed (the second one was not recommended). He’s on a raw and fresh home-cooked diet, and lives quite the charmed life. I’ve occasionally provided Nutter with natural joint supplements for cats, but nothing regular. To be honest, I’m not sure why—maybe it’s because Nutter is thriving and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. However, I’m an advocate of proactive pet care, and I’ve felt a bit guilty about not giving Nutter something to help combat aging symptoms. I decided it was time to look for a great brand and product to give Nutter to help keep him frisky and happy.

While searching for a natural brand, I found NHV Natural Pet Products. NHV Natural Pet Products provides vet-formulated herbal solutions designed to promote health and stimulate healing. All their products and supplements are made with 100% natural ingredients and are formulated by a master herbalist and a holistic veterinarian with more than 20 years’ experience developing plant-based remedies. They are free of additives and preservatives, and made with the finest organically-grown or ethically-harvested herbs. Their products are also tested by a third-party lab. I reached out to NHV Natural Pet Products for a recommendation on what they would suggest for my senior cat.

We decided NHV’s Joint Problems Kit 2 would be a great addition to Nutter’s daily care. This natural cat supplement kit contains three formulas to help alleviate arthritic discomfort, aid digestion, stimulate appetite, and support general well-being.

Old Timer is an herbal blend that helps to soothe inflammation and joint pain. The herbals help with arthritis symptoms; boost the immune system; and provide antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids, and minerals.

Turmeric For Cats is another wonderful natural herbal supplement that can aid in a cat’s overall health and vitality. Turmeric has been used for centuries, and is considered to be a super food for us and our pets. Turmeric is an excellent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, and so much more.

NHV Product Reviews

It’s pretty easy to administer. Twice a day, shake and put the drops into his food and stir. Nutter gobbled up his food without any issues for about four days. Then, he didn’t want to eat his breakfast serving. It ended up not being the supplement, but Nutter’s food rotation—he wasn’t in the mood for chicken. Once I went back to his beef formula, he gobbled it back up. Silly kitty.

However, we know cats can be tricky to medicate at times. If this is the case, after your cat has eaten, you can administer your cat’s supplement directly into his mouth with the dropper provided. Or you can place tasty food toppers on his food and supplement to encourage eating.

I am completely happy with the quality of NHV’s products, and will continue to provide this remedy for Nutter to help him age gracefully. I think it’s important to help my pets live life to the fullest and healthiest, and I take proactive steps with their health care. This should have included a product line for joints a long time ago.

I encourage you to do the same and visit NHV Natural Pet Products. They offer a wide range of natural pet products and are absolutely amazing to work with. Tell them Nutter sent you!

Enter to win below!

Does your dog have a dry nose or cracked dog paws? I bet you are trying to find natural remedies to help with your dog’s dry nose and rough dog paws. The first thing I always recommend is to check your dog’s diet.

Dogs (cats and people, too!) need a diet with plenty of moisture to ensure organs receive enough moisture to function properly. Skin is our biggest organ, which includes a dog’s nose and paw pads. Lack of moisture in a dog’s diet can lead to a dry dog nose and dry, rough paws. A dog with dry paws, nose, and coat may also have a Yin Deficiency. Yin Deficiency basically means a being is too hot, and does not have enough coolness or moisture in their body. Increasing Yin tonics added to the right foods and herbs can help rectify this problem.

However, a dog’s environment can also lead to a cracked dog nose and cracked paws. Once a species-appropriate diet is addressed, you can apply a natural moisturizer to your dog’s paws and nose to help bring moisture back into his body and to add a layer of protection to help prevent damage from the elements.

Absorbs quickly

Certified Organic Healing Balm for Dog Nose and Paw Pad Ingredients: Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Rosemary Extract, Organic Calendula Extract, Organic St. John’s Wort, Organic Beeswax, Natural Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

Dexter’s nose and paw pads are in pretty good shape but not perfect, and I certainly appreciate the protective aspect of 4-Legger’s healing balm. I applied the paw and nose balm to Dexter’s nose and pads twice a day. I just placed a dab of the balm on my finger and rubbed it on Dexter’s nose and pads.

The healing balm absorbed quickly, but I did place toddler socks on Dexter’s feet to help prevent too much licking. Dexter loves the taste and wanted to lick it off even before I had it all on. I provided him with a bully stick after applying the balm, so he would focus on chewing his stick instead of taking off his socks and licking his feet. Luckily all the ingredients are safe and non-toxic, and since the balm absorbs easily, the healing action gets to work quickly.

He is a silly monkey!

As you can see from Dexter’s before and after pictures, after only six days of using 4-Legger Certified Organic Healing Balm for Dog Nose and Paw Pads, his paw pads are looking healthier. Because Dexter’s paws and nose were in pretty good shape to begin with, there wasn’t a dramatic change. I try to stay as proactive as I can in Dexter’s health to keep him in tip-top shape. That said, I will be adding 4-Legger’s healing balm to Dexter’s weekly regimen to aid in protection and moisture.

The healing balm is also good for hot spots, skin conditions, wound healing, and bug bites, so it has a place in Dexter’s dog first aid kit. As an extra bonus, the balm is a natural dog sunscreen of SPF 15, so I will be using it once the sun finds its way back to Ohio! 😉
