Choosing CBD Oil for Your Pets

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Angel Nutter

As most of you may already know, Dexter has a neurological disorder that I’m always trying to keep at bay. My goal for Dexter’s care is to provide him with the best pain-free life possible. This little monkey is almost 9 years young, and often people think he’s a puppy. They are shocked when I tell them his age and that he has a disease that can cause so much pain.

His medical treatment is not a one and done, but a synergy of things to help keep him as pain-free, mobile, and happy as possible. One of Dexter’s daily regimes includes CBD oil for dogs. Before I go into my review of Innovet PurCBD+ PhytoCannaBinoiD Oil for Pets, I want to give you a little background on hemp for dogs and help you in determining if CBD oil is right for your pet. I also want to offer some ideas on how to choose a good CBD oil brand for your dog.

Will CBD Oil Get My Dog High?

In a word, no. Both marijuana and hemp come from the same plant genus, Cannabaceae, but they are two different plants. Hemp-derived phytocannabinoids do not contain the hallucinogenic compound Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), so they do not cause the “high” associated with marijuana. You may actually start to see a change in labeling and classification to PCD Oil, as it is more accurate than CBD Oil. To be classified as hemp, it must contain less than 0.3% of THC. Some varieties of hemp products are nearly free of THC.

Choosing A CBD / PCD Brand for Your Dog

When I’m choosing a CBD oil for Dexter, the first thing I look for is their published testing and lab results. In my opinion, the best CBD oil companies offer transparency and publish their lab results online for consumers to review. Following their testing results, I want to read their entire ingredient panel. I don’t want to know just the active ingredients. I also want to know the inactive ingredients.

Innovet PurCBD+ PhytoCannaBinoiD Oil for Pets

Three Items to Evaluate

When I’m reading the lab results, the three things I look at are the chemical residue results, amount of THC, and the total cannabinoids by weight. I don’t have a set “this fails, this passes,” but I go with my gut. And when I’m thinking about Dexter, I can be pretty choosy in quality. I will say, the first two, residues and THC, play a bigger role than the amount of cannabinoids, since that can always be increased or decreased, but quality cannot change.

Dexter’s Journey with CBD Oil for Dogs

Over the last year, Dexter’s disease has continued to progress. There is no stopping that, therefore, I try my best to stay one step ahead with this care and prep him and his body to be able to meet the upcoming challenges.

About a year ago, Dexter became a bit wobbly and bobbly. I would see his head doing a little shake and his eyes fluttering. I spoke with Dexter’s canine rehabilitation veterinarian, Dr. Mary L. Cardeccia, on what I could do to help, and she prescribed phytocannabinoid-rich (PCR) oil twice a day.

Dr. Cardeccia explains, “Phytocannabinoids and terpenes have anti-inflammatory properties, pain relieving properties, and a quieting/soothing effect on the central nervous system (can control seizures), so I am hoping that using it with Dex would help on all three of those levels.” Dr. Cardeccia continued by saying, “I think that you may start seeing improvement after a few doses, as the anti-inflammatory effects should not take long, but the CNS (Central Nervous System) effects may take a couple of weeks to get to full effect.”

When I started Dexter on his 2 times a day dose of CBD oil, I started to see fewer bobbles pretty quickly and even an increase in his spunk. A few months into Dexter’s regimen, Dr. Cardeccia increased his dose from 2 times a day to 3 times a day. We are shooting for no bobbles. Sadly, I’m still seeing bobbles, but even less frequent than on our 2 times a day dose. That said, adding CBD oil to Dexter’s care has made a big improvement in his life.

When Innovet reached out regarding their PurCBD+ PhytoCannaBinoiD Oil for Pets, I went through my regular screening process. First, I went to their website to see if they provided testing results on their pet CBD oil, which they did. The results checked out, so my next step was to read the entire ingredient panel. All my quality control items checked out, so I happily obliged in providing a review and working with Innovet. We decided Dexter should use their PurCBD+ PhytoCannaBinoiD Oil 750mg.

Dexter and I are reviewing 4-Legger’s new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe line. Today, I’m going to tell you about their Lemongrass and Hemp organic dog shampoo. A quick recap for those of you new to my holistic pet care blog and my personal philosophy when it comes to using products for any of my pets.

I’m an ingredient reader first. Nope, I don’t just read the front of the package, but I flip the package over and read each ingredient, active and non-active. Then, if there are any ingredients I don’t know the risk factors of, or what they are, I do my research before using them. This goes for every product I use or feed, even supplements.

Pet grooming products are notorious for including synthetic and harmful ingredients. Lucky for me, I have been working with and using the 4-Legger brand since 2016. There aren’t any scary or harmful ingredients, no sneaky marketing, just synthetic-free, clean, simple, and beneficial ingredients.

When 4-Legger reached out to me to test and review their new certified organic dog shampoo with aloe juice, it was a no-brainier. I was all in.

What makes 4-Legger’s organic dog shampoo with aloe juice unique is that they have eliminated the water portion of the natural dog shampoo and replaced it with organic aloe juice. This change makes their organic dog shampoo even more moisturizing and hydrating than ever before. It also makes it the first dog shampoo company in the world to develop an aloe based USDA Certified Organic formulation! That is amazing!

Aloe vera is a natural healer helping relieve dry, flaky, and itchy skin. Combined with shea butter, sunflower oil, coconut oil, and olive oil to aid in skin and itch relief. This combination of moisturizing ingredients makes your dog’s coat silky smooth. For this review, I used 4-Legger’s Moisturize (Lemongrass and Hemp) formula.

USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Lemongrass and Hemp Ingredients: Organic Aloe Juice, Organic Saponified Oils (Coconut, Shea Butter, Olive, Sunflower, and Jojoba), Organic Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Lemongrass Essential Oil, Organic Rosemary Essential Oil, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Rosemary Extract

4-Legger’s organic hemp dog shampoo is a powerhouse at bringing moisture back to a dog’s fur and skin. It’s a perfect organic and natural dog shampoo for dry skin and to help eliminate dog odor. The all-organic ingredients like organic lemongrass essential oil and hemp seed oil are beneficial for toning and maintaining your dog’s natural skin moisture without blocking their pores.

If you are looking for the best organic dog flea shampoo, this may be just what the holistic veterinarian recommends. The organic lemongrass not only gets rid of the doggy smell, it also provides a natural flea deterrent. It’s a perfect addition to your dog’s natural flea-and-tick regimen. In aromatherapy, lemongrass is used to revitalize the mind and soul. As a bonus, it provides antibacterial, anti-fungal properties.

The organic hemp oil is great for all skin types and rejuvenates the skin by providing soothing relief for irritated skin. The organic and THC-free hemp seed oil also provides moisture without blocking the pores and helps balance the skin’s natural sebum. This is a great dog shampoo for allergies and itchy skin.

As with all my experiences with 4-Legger, this formula performed amazingly! First, the lemony smell was lovely. To date, it’s my favorite, best-smelling dog shampoo. Okay, I love all their scents, but this was really refreshing. Just a little reminder for those new to chemical-free dog shampoos. It’s important to rinse thoroughly, more than you might think. This line is also concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

Dexter’s coat came out clean, bright, and soft. As a matter of fact, we went on a dog outing the next day and three different people told me how soft he was. I’m always so happy at the results I get from 4-Legger products, and their new USDA certified organic dog shampoo with aloe line is truly amazing, Dexter’s coat is just so bunny soft.

If you are looking for a natural and organic dog shampoo without any hidden ingredients, I can highly recommend checking out 4-Legger’s dog shampoo lines.  Order today with promo code RaiseNaturally20 for 20% off your first order.

Dog-friendly vacations are the best when your dog can participate in tourist attractions. During my stay in the dog-friendly city of St. Augustine, Dexter enjoyed a lot of dog-friendly attractions, restaurants, and tours. I knew Dexter had to visit the world-famous Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park.

As a dog-mom, I’m very proactive in Dexter’s natural-health-care routine, and when I heard dogs are welcome to drink out of the Fountain of Youth, I knew it was a must see.

Watch our Fountain of Youth Video

The Fountain of Youth St. Augustine Dog-Friendly Attractions

The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is more than just the magical Fountain. It’s actually much more. Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is the original site of the Nation’s Oldest City and dates back to 1513. Colonial America started right in the park before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock.

The Fountain of Youth is the oldest attraction in Florida and is home to 15 waterfront acres full of history. Some of the dog-friendly attractions include the Discovery Globe, blacksmith exhibit, Timucuan burials and village, Nombre de Dios Mision, 1565 Menendez settlement, excavations, Spanish lookout, cannon firing, Founders’ Observation Riverwalk and of course, the Fountain in the Spring House. Not to mention the nearly 30 unforgettable Indian peafowl (peacocks) roaming around.

Birds at The Fountain of Youth

The exhibits were both indoors and outdoors, which made this dog-friendly attraction a win in our book. The day we visited, it was incredibly hot and humid, so being able to take Dexter inside to enjoy the indoor activities was a real treat and a great way to cool down.

Navigator’s Planetarium

Dexter and I enjoyed not only a cool-down in the planetarium, but we had a great educational experience. We learned how the early Spanish and Portuguese explorers of the 1400s navigated the world using the stars. It was really fascinating to learn how Juan Ponce de Leon used the night sky for navigation and landed at the Fountain of Youth. And the best part? The planetarium transformed to show us how the sky looked way back then!

Discovery Globe

This was another great dog-friendly indoor attraction. The Discovery Globe illustrated the routes of the early Spanish and Portuguese explorers to and from the New World. The impressive globe is 30 feet high and glows with such brilliance it was awe-inspiring. The show demonstrated the extent of the lands of La Florida and the settlements and cities that they founded.

The Spring House-Fountain of Youth

The highlight of my dog-friendly trip to St. Augustine was definitely having Dexter drink out of Juan Ponce de Leon’s Spring of Eternal Hope. The Fountain is the original spring that was recorded in a seventeenth century Spanish land grant. With signed guest books as far back as 1868. The spring comes directly from the Floridan aquifer, which lies below ground under most of North Florida. The Fountain water contains over 30 minerals.

Drinking from the Fountain of Youth

Is the Fountain of Youth Real?

That’s for you to decide. Dexter certainly seemed to enjoy lapping up the water and even went for seconds. It’s pretty unusual for Dexter to want to drink during day trips, so I think there may be something to the mythical legend.

We spent a few hours visiting the different pet-friendly attractions, exhibits, and gift shop. If we had more time, we could have easily spent the entire day. Located inside the park is Smoked Southern BBQ which cooks only fresh and local sustainable food. If you are traveling with your dog in Florida, The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is a must-see.

Dog-friendly vacations are the best when you are visiting a pet-friendly city like St. Augustine, Florida. During our dog-friendly vacation to Florida, the family stayed two nights in St Augustine, Florida. The Nation’s Oldest City has definitely been on my radar for many years.

Dog-Friendly St. Augustine Video

St. Augustine was founded in 1565 and offers not only great beaches, outdoor activities, dining, shopping, and historic attractions, but St. Augustine is very pet-friendly! Dexter the Dog and I love to travel and visit dog-friendly cities.

Best Pet Friendly Vacations

Pet-friendly St. Augustine knows how to welcome their canine friends. St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and The Beaches have approximately 50 pet-friendly accommodations ranging in price points and variety – from hotels, to bed and breakfast, inns, and beach resorts. Leashed dogs are welcome in several area attractions including Colonial Quarter Museum, Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, Spanish Military Hospital Museum, Schooner Freedom, St. Augustine Scenic Cruise, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, Red Train Tour, Ghost Tour, and various dog-friendly restaurants. You can read more on Dexter’s and my experience at Ripley’s and the Red Train here.

Pet-Friendly Florida Attractions

While visiting, Dexter and I weren’t only allowed in a lot of stores, restaurants, and attractions, we were welcomed with open arms, water bowls, and dog treats.

We enjoyed strolling through St. Augustine’s historic district, where he was welcome in most stores. I’m not sure if all stores are dog-friendly, but each one I asked, said yes. 🙂 There were a lot of dog-friendly outdoor restaurants; it was hard to choose. We decided to eat at Taberna del Caballo. The service, setting, and food were great! A little taste of Spain in each bite. Dexter enjoyed a nice, icy water and, of course, I provided him with some extra treats and fresh veggies from my plate.

Dog-Friendly St. Augustine Restaurants

St. Augustine beaches are even dog-friendly! St. Augustine and the surrounding area has some of the best beaches in Florida. That was a welcomed treat, as a lot of the beaches on the west side of Florida are not dog-friendly unless they are a specific dog beach. We visited Ponte Vedra Beach, where Dexter enjoyed mucking around the beach, sniffing the waves, and trying to eat the sea shells on the shore.

If you are looking for dog-friendly beaches, historic attractions, outdoor activities, dining, and shopping, you won’t want to miss St. Augustine on Florida’s Historic Coast. While many vacation spots boast of pet-friendly hotels or dog-friendly beaches, few destinations are as canine-centric as Florida’s Historic Coast.

As you may recall, Dexter and I are reviewing 4-Legger’s new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe line. Just a quick recap for those new to my natural pet care blog. I’m an adamant label reader when choosing pet products for both Dexter the Dog and Nutter the Cat. Every ingredient inside their pet products counts. Not just what’s excluded from a product, but what’s INCLUDED in the product.

4-Legger has been my go-to natural dog shampoo since 2016. I don’t recall how I first met the gals behind 4-Legger, but I was hooked as soon as I read a few of their organic dog shampoo ingredient panels. The ingredients inside their lines are synthetic-free, clean, simple, and beneficial. When they reached out to me to test and review their new certified organic dog shampoo with aloe juice, I was all in.

In 4-Legger’s organic dog shampoo with aloe juice, they have eliminated the water portion of the natural dog shampoo and replaced it with organic aloe juice. By making this switch, the shampoo offers more moisturizing and hydration benefits. Aloe vera is a natural healer helping relieve dry, flaky, and itchy skin.

5 new non-toxic dog shampoos to choose from

They didn’t stop there. To aid in skin and itch relief, shea butter, sunflower oil, coconut oil, and olive oil are included in the ingredients. This combination makes your dog’s coat silky smooth. For this review, I used 4-Legger’s Cooling (Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil) formula.

USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Peppermint and Tea Tree Oil Ingredients: Organic aloe juice, organic saponified oils (coconut, shea butter, olive, sunflower, & jojoba), organic vegetable glycerin, organic peppermint essential oil, organic tea tree oil, organic eucalyptus essential oil, organic rosemary extract

One of the reasons I chose the peppermint-and-tea-tree oil blend next is because both peppermint and tea tree oil can be used to help deter fleas and ticks! I don’t use topical or oral tick prevention that includes harmful ingredients like pesticides. Instead, I use a variety of natural treatments and remedies to keep Dexter tick-and-flea free. By including a natural flea and tick shampoo, I’m adding a safe layer to Dexter’s regimen.

I also added this formula to Dexter’s Natural DIY dog wipes. Yet one more layer to him being pest-free. You can read how to make your own dog foot wipe in this article.

4-Legger’s concentrated tea-tree-and-peppermint dog shampoo offers many other benefits besides being a good choice to deter fleas and ticks. These essential oils are antifungal, making this a great choice for those dogs who are yeasty or have “Cheeto-smelling feet.” It’s a great alternative to medicated dog shampoo which typically contains harsh and toxic chemicals.

After-Bright, clean and soft

I wanted to address the organic tea tree oil in this dog shampoo. A poor quality tea tree oil or if used in high amounts can be toxic to pets. I will be the first to admit, I find determining the quality and safety of essential oils for pets very confusing. I’m a person who always errs on the side of caution, so I reached out to Angela, the science guru at 4-Legger to inquire about the tea tree oil used in their products. I’ve bent Angela’s ear more than once about essential oils. She’s my go-to gal! I’m going to quote her so you can get the full story on their quality oils.

“There are vast differences in quality of tea tree oils. The quality of the tea tree is, in general, based on the actual concentrations of Terpinen-4-ol (which has the anti-microbial properties) and 1,8-Cineole (a natural organic compound better known as eucalyptol, the main ingredient in eucalyptus oil). Better quality tea tree oils contain higher concentration levels of Terpinen-4-ol and lower levels of 1,8-Cineole. The high-quality standard is between 30-40% for Terpinen-4-ol and less than 7% for 1,8-Cineole and then diluted properly in the shampoo (more about that below).

Because our peppermint-and-tea-tree shampoo is USDA organic, ALL of the ingredients are USDA certified organic – from seed, growth, harvest, shipping, manufacturing, etc. are all done in compliance with the USDA regulations. This means there is zero opportunity for contamination of the ingredients and third-party validation when you see ‘Organic Peppermint essential oil’ on the label, you have 100% trust what is on the bottle is in the bottle! Beyond our commitment to pet parents, it is our commitment to the environment by using Non-GMO plants, no pesticides, and no herbicides. it is totally worth paying more for ingredients that are responsibly sourced, better quality, and better for the environment.

Diluted properly, tea tree oil is VERY beneficial. The studies that classified tea tree oil as toxic were using full strength tea tree oil. Just like with essential oils, if you use full strength topically, it can cause reactions. Recommended dilution of tea tree oil is 0.1 – 1% for topical application. Our tree oil is both diluted properly and the highest quality.

I’d not recommend this blend for cats. It would be very unlikely they would have a reaction, but typically cats don’t like the smell of tea tree oil or peppermint.”

After hearing Angela explain 4-Legger’s quality control, I felt confident with their use of tea tree oil.

The peppermint essential oil also helps fight bacterial infections, is anti-inflammatory and cooling. Peppermint also helps fight canine seborrhea (dandruff and greasiness of the skin and hair). Eucalyptus provides natural relief from bacteria, fungus, and inflammation, making this threesome a great combination for the itchy, flaky, yeasty, and stinky dog!

If you are looking for the best-smelling dog shampoo, this is right up there. As always, people’s scenting preferences are different, but if sweet peppermint is your thing, you’ll love the smell! And don’t worry, it’s not too strong, no burning of your eyes while bathing your dog.

Dexter is always a trouper for his dog bath. Can’t say he likes it, but he’s always such a tolerant and good boy. After scrubbing Dexter from head to tail, I thoroughly rinsed all the shampoo from his body and allowed him to fully air dry. Just a little reminder for those new to chemical-free dog shampoos. It’s important to rinse thoroughly, more than you might think.

Once I brushed him, I was amazed at how white his whites were and red his reds. I’ve always been happy with the way 4-Legger performs, but it still amazes me how white Dexter is after his baths without a chemical-whiting shampoo.

Did you know that dog dehydration is a serious risk to your beloved canine? Dehydration can actually lead to death, so it is critical to know the signs of dog dehydration before it’s too late.

Dog Dehydration Symptoms

  • Loss of skin elasticity- Gently pick up the skin from the top of your dog’s neck and let go. If your dog’s skin does not snap back into place, your dog is dehydrated.
  • Rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, or panting
  • Dry nose or gums- Gently lift up your dog’s lips and look at his gums. If they are dry or gray, he may be at risk for dehydration. Press your finger to his gums and release. You will notice the gum will be briefly white but then should return quickly to normal, if not, then dehydration is likely.
  • Sunken or empty eyes- If your dog seems to have lost the sparkle in his eyes, this can be a sign that your dog is dehydrated.
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive drooling
  • Weakness, lethargy, or shakiness
  • Collapse

Common Dog Dehydration Causes

A dog may become dehydrated for a variety of reasons. Dehydration is caused by fluid loss and lack of moisture in the body. Medical conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, cancer, heat stroke, diarrhea, vomiting, ingesting a toxin or parasites, just to name a few. A processed, dry dog food also can become a culprit as a dog’s kidneys work overtime resulting in a constant state of low-grade dehydration.

Dog Dehydration Treatment

If you have the slightest concern that your dog is dehydrated, please seek veterinarian assistance immediately. Dr. Karen Becker, a proactive and integrative wellness veterinarian, explains, “Dehydration reduces the volume of both blood and intracellular fluids flowing through the body, which in turn reduces oxygen delivery to tissues and organs, as well as the removal of waste products.” She continues by saying, “Which can interfere with the normal function of the body’s organs and systems. If a dehydrated pet isn’t quickly rehydrated, death can occur very quickly.”

Your dog’s veterinarian will likely will provide your dog with IV fluids to replenish electrolytes. In more serious cases, this may take place over the course of a few days, or until your dog can fully recover. If it is unknown why your dog was dehydrated, your vet may want to run a variety of tests and blood work to try to find the root cause.

Preventing Dog Dehydration

Ensure you are addressing any medical concerns your dog may have. Feed your dog a species-appropriate diet that is extremely high in moisture vs. a dry kibble. Prevent your dog from becoming overheated or exhausted. And, finally, help your dog stay hydrated by providing him with plenty of cool, clean, filtered water.

Encouraging Your Dog to Drink Water on the Road

If your dog is anything like Dexter or my previous dog, Theo, getting him to drink during outdoor adventures can be tricky. But, this is one time you don’t want your dog to not drink water. Here are some of my go-to tips to help a dog that won’t drink water.

Keep your dog’s water nice and cool in a stainless steel dog-water bottle. If you are out and about or your dog’s water bottle is in the car heating up, that water can actually get really hot. Instead, keep your dog’s water nice and cool in a stainless-steel travel-water bottle and even better yet, pop that into a portable cooler or travel cooler bag.

Entice your dog’s taste buds by adding Primalvore’s bone broth to his water! Not only will bone broth increase the likelihood your dog will drink his water, it will also provide a protein boost and vital minerals, perfect to keep your dog moving. I’m a big fan of Primalvore because the bones they use for their broths are made from humanely raised, human-grade free-range meat bones. The cattle are 100% grass fed, and the chickens are 100% free range. The beef and chicken bone broths come from organic cow and chicken bones (no antibiotics or added hormones). Both the turkey and duck bones are also antibiotic- and hormone-free.

Preventing Dog Dehydration

I make adding bone broth to Dexter’s drinking water very easy. I make bone broth ice cubes and store them in a glass container. When I’m preparing Dexter’s travel-water bottle, I just pop a couple of cubes inside. Easy-peasy. Now that I add Primalvore’s bone broth to Dexter’s travel bottle, I have zero issues getting him to drink.

So, remember to keep your dog hydrated, and if you have the slightest concern that your dog may be dehydrated, seek medical assistance right away.

Healthy and natural dog chews

Most dogs love to chew. Chewing is such a nice behavior for dogs. It helps keep their teeth clean, fights boredom, and if you give your dog healthy dog chews, can even provide nutritional benefits.

When I’m searching for the best dog chew bones for Dexter, I follow a few personal guidelines. First, I think it’s important to remember, a dog chew bone is going to be chewed on and possibly eaten, therefore, I’m not a fan of plastic bones. Nope, not going to feed my dog plastic. Second, if it’s a processed type of dog bone and has an ingredient label, I want to read that label and ensure it’s truly something I would want Dexter to eat. As of this posting, I have not found a processed dog bone that I would feed Dexter. Let’s just take a look at one of the popular “natural” examples.

Potato Starch, Glycerin, Powdered Cellulose, Lecithin, Yeast, Malt Extract, Lupine, Annatto Extract Color, Alfalfa Extract.

Although nothing in this natural dog chew will immediately harm your dog, it’s not healthy, and starch is not a great addition to a dog’s diet. There isn’t anything healthy in this ingredient panel, so it would be like eating a king-sized candy bar. For Dexter, consuming glycerin is a short trip to having diarrhea!

Here’s another popular dental dog chew’s ingredients.

Wheat flour, wheat gluten, glycerin, gelatin, oat fiber, water, lecithin, natural poultry flavor, minerals (dicalcium phosphate, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, magnesium amino acid chelate, zinc amino acid chelate, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, manganese amino acid chelate, selenium, potassium iodide), dried apple pomace, choline chloride, fruit juice color, vitamins ( dl-alpha tocopherol acetate [source of vitamin E], vitamin B12 supplement, d-calcium pantothenate [vitamin B5], niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, riboflavin supplement [vitamin B2], vitamin D3 supplement, biotin, pyridoxine hydrochloride [vitamin B6], thiamine mononitrate [vitamin B1], folic acid), turmeric color.

Wow is right. That’s a lot of ingredients for one dental dog chew. And all those vitamins, they’re synthetic. So, no. I do not feed Dexter either of these dog chews, nor would I recommend them. But I do like to provide Dexter with healthy, real dog bones and chews, something I can feel good about giving Dexter and know that he can actually benefit nutritionally from eating.

Duck feet for dogs

I love giving Dexter natural duck feet for dogs. And, recently, I have introduced all natural chicken feet for dogs into his chewing rotation, and here’s why I love bird feet. 🙂

Both chicken and duck feet are a natural source of chondroitin, glucosamine and collagen. Together, this provides joint health by producing joint fluid, reduces the risk of brittle bones, improves mobility, and helps maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Best Dog Bones for Dogs. Healthy Companion Company's Dog Chicken Feet and Duck Feet for Dogs Review. #raisingyourpetsnaturally
All natural duck and chicken feet for dogs to chew

Chondroitin and glucosamine are beneficial to all life-stages. Recently, one of Dexter’s vets recommended I provide him with regular glucosamine and chondroitin. Instead of giving him a supplement, I have increased his consumption of duck feet, chicken feet, beef gullet, and duck necks. I rotate these various forms into his diet, to ensure the most diverse form of nutrition.

The Healthy Companion Company was kind enough to allow me to try and review both their chicken feet for dogs and duck feet for dogs. Quality ingredients is always one of my top priorities when choosing a product for Dexter. The Healthy Companion Company manufactures all their treats in the US, AND all the ingredients are sourced from US farmers. Both their chicken and duck feet come from antibiotic and hormone-free birds.

Duck Feet Ingredients: Duck Feet

Chicken Feet Ingredients: Chicken Feet

That’s it. No preservatives, or anything added. Just 100% dehydrated duck or chicken feet. Both healthy dog chews are dehydrated, which means they retain their dense nutrients. I’ve regularly given Dexter duck feet dog chews in the past, and I have to admit, these feet from The Healthy Companion Company are really nice. What I appreciate from this company is that their feet are a bit drier than the ones I’ve had before.

Healthy dog chew bones

And Dexter? He loves a good dehydrated duck foot. And the chicken feet? He gave those a green light too. Dehydrated duck and chicken feet are typically a crunchy, edible dog chew. Edible is important. Please remember to include this into his daily food calorie calculation, so that your dog does not pack on the pounds. Cutting a little of his daily food and replacing it with a duck or chicken foot is completely healthy and nutritious, so you can swap with confidence or add a bit more exercise for the day.

When giving your dog a new chew, I always recommend holding the chew and allowing your dog to chew and eat with you holding one end. This helps ensure that your dog can safely manage the chew and if not, you are able to remove it without needing to try to chase your dog down. Once you feel comfortable with how your dog will consume his snack, please still supervise.

If you are looking for natural, healthy dog bones or dog chew, I highly recommend checking out The Healthy Companion Company’s line of duck and chicken feet. They also provide all-natural dehydrated meat treats if you are looking for healthy dog training treats! Don’t forget to tell them that Dexter the Dog sent you.

I love 4-Legger! There, I said it. I’ve been using and reviewing their natural dog grooming products since 2016. Why? Because not only do their natural dog grooming products work, but they truly are nontoxic and synthetic-free. So, when they contacted me about their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo line, I was in!

I will have to apologize to Dexter The Dog, because I have agreed to review all five varieties of their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe Juice. No worries, Dexter won’t be receiving any extra baths, but he does have to stay in the tub longer for the photo shoots. Learn how to bathe your dog in this article.

5 new non-toxic dog shampoos to choose from

What Makes 4-Legger USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Organic Aloe Juice so Special?

This is the first USDA certified organic dog shampoo using safe and nontoxic organic aloe juice, organic oils, and organic essential oils. 4-Legger has truly changed the pet-grooming product industry by manufacturing the first safe and nontoxic aloe-based USDA certified organic dog shampoo made with shea butter, sunflower oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and essential oils. A truly safe and nontoxic aloe formulation that shows it meets the highest standards of the USDA with the seal on the front of the bottle.

I personally find it refreshing that a dog-grooming company truly cares about our pets and has made it their mission to provide safe, effective, and synthetic-free products for our 4-leggers. I was truly excited to dive into one of their new USDA Certified Organic Dog Shampoos. I chose to try their USDA Certified Organic Neem Dog Shampoo first.

Besides the amazing quality of ingredients used in 4-Legger’s dog shampoos, the ingredient choices are also unique. This new line contains organic aloe vera juice as the first ingredient. Aloe has been used to nourish the body, skin, and hair for over 6,000 years. Aloe juice has been used to help treat and condition flaky skin, dry skin, and minor infections. It also has been used for hair (aka fur, in our case) to increase the health, shine, and silkiness.

Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, and Organic Vegetable Glycerin provide hydration, moisturizes, soothes inflammation, are rich in vitamins and fatty acids to aid in creating a healthy and organic dog shampoo.

The organic sweet orange essential oil is packed with Vitamin C to help repair skin, promotes healthy skin, and also helps reduce inflammation and bacteria. As an added bonus, sweet orange essential oil is uplifting emotionally.

The organic neem oil is known for its ability to repel pests, making this a good choice for the summer months. Neem oil also offers anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties and excels at cleaning and eliminating dandruff while hydrating the skin and hair follicles.

The organic rosemary extract is an antioxidant powerhouse that also doubles as a natural preservative.

After thoroughly wetting Dexter, I began to lather and scrub Dexter. For those unfamiliar with natural shampoos that don’t have any synthetic lathering agents, if you feel like you need more of a lather,  don’t increase the shampoo, increase the water.

After I scrubbed Dexter from head to tail, I began my rinse process. It’s super important to rinse thoroughly. I recommend rinsing and rinsing again. You want to ensure removing all the shampoo. Don’t forget the pits and bottom area.

Typical for nontoxic dog shampoo, Dexter’s coat felt a bit tacky when wet. But I’m very familiar with this process and feel. Once Dexter fully dried, his fur was super soft and extremely white! I gave Dexter a good brushing and was tickled at how soft he felt. I’ve always loved the quality of 4-Legger’s dog shampoos, but they were right, he was even more silky smooth. His chest fur was soft, like a bunny. Now, that’s pretty impressive.

I love that I don’t have to worry about the ingredients inside of 4-Legger’s products (but I’ll continue to always read each ingredient panel). 4-Legger uses simple, clean, all-natural ingredients. I know they are a company that truly cares about Dexter’s health and what I put on him.

The next time you are shopping for a truly nontoxic organic dog shampoo, give 4-Legger a try! Visit 4-Legger today.  Order today with promo code RaiseNaturally20 for 20% off your first order. Tell them Dexter sent you.

Healthy and motivating dog treats

As a positive dog trainer, I’m always recommending that my dog-training students use high-value and motivating dog treats during training. Dog training takes a lot of time, patience, and repetition, which can lead to a lot of dog-training treats. However, this does not mean that those dog training treats can’t be healthy, and even included in the dog’s daily calorie intake! As a matter of fact, I’m an advocate for using a dog’s daily food or food calories as their dog-training rewards. Here’s the rundown.

By now, you probably already know I’m a firm believer in a species-appropriate diet, which means a home-cooked or raw diet for dogs. In this diet, a dog receives a lot of real meat. After all, dogs are carnivores; you just need to take a peek at those razor-sharp teeth to realize they were made to eat meat.

When a dog is learning new behaviors or unlearning behaviors, it’s important to reward that dog often in order to make the new behavior a habit. Meat is an excellent motivator and healthy dog-training treat. And the best part is if you are incorporating meat without any other ingredients such as flour, sugars, grains, etc., you can count that meat as part of his daily food portion. Voilà, no extra calories for dog training and no fat dogs for positive-reinforcement training! Just happy, well-fed, and well-trained dogs.

When I’m looking for the best dog-training treats, I look for natural dog treats that are ideally just meat. I was beyond thrilled when I found The Healthy Companion Company and their line of wholesome meat treats. The Healthy Companion Company not only manufactures their treats in the US, but they also source all of their ingredients from local US farmers. The best part is that their meat treats are made without chemicals, preservatives, additives, and the meats are antibiotic and hormone free!

Blend of Turkey-Beef Heart-Chicken Bites Ingredients: 1/3 turkey with bone, 1/3 beef heart, and 1/3 chicken with bone.

Rabbit Formula Ingredients: Whole ground rabbit

I’m obviously over the moon with the quality of The Healthy Companion Company’s treats, and both Dexter and Nutter were going crazy when I opened the shipping box. Dexter was extremely eager to dive in, but he waited patiently as I took the photos for our natural dog treat review.

Not yet! 🙂

When Dexter finally had his first bite of the all-natural rabbit dog-treat formula, his eyes bulged out, and he looked at me for more. I obliged and gave him a few more rabbit treats. Then, we moved on to the Blend of Turkey-Beef Heart-Chicken Bites. Dexter was just as impressed and happy. I couldn’t leave Nutter The Cat out. He also gobbled them up.

Natural dog treats

These all-natural dog treats are a great size, light, and easily break apart for the perfect bite for a dog training treat. I love the fact they are thin and don’t take up much room in a pocket, which is especially important when training a dog on the go.

Perfect treats for dog training

These natural meat dog treats are dehydrated, which means they retain most of their nutrients, making these treats very nutritional. The Healthy Companion Company does not use any form of preservative, so it’s best to store the treats in the refrigerator to ensure freshness.

Because The Healthy Companion Company uses bone and organ in their antibiotic-and-hormone-free dog treats, I can easily recommend that these treats are used in replacement of a portion of a dog’s daily calories for training.

If you are looking for natural, healthy dog treats, especially for dog-training treats, I highly recommend checking out The Healthy Companion Company’s line of meat treats. They also provide all-natural dehydrated duck and chicken feet if you are looking for a healthy dog chew! Don’t forget to tell them that Dexter the Dog sent you.

4LazyLegs Pet Carrier Review

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post and also has affiliate links. However, I will always try to offer my readers great product selections. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

Dexter the Dog is a well-traveled, highly adventurous dog. One of our favorite things to do together is to hit the open road and find new and exciting dog-friendly opportunities. However, Dexter is also a senior dog with special needs, which can sometimes limit his mobility.

His mobility may be limited, but his mind and heart still wants to participate in the family fun. When Dexter is with me, I always have his dog stroller in my car for the times Dexter needs an extra lift or a rest. However, a pet stroller isn’t always an option on some of our dog-friendly trips or adventures. Take the beach or a rocky hiking trail, for example. It’s just not possible to use Dexter’s dog stroller in these situations. I have been on the hunt for a dog sling that I can wear and place Dexter inside, but this has not been an easy task.

Dexter is not your typical small Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. No, he’s a long, tall, pushing 30 pound Cavalier! Nope, he’s not fat, he’s just our moose. 😉 Most dog front-carrier bags are made for a small dog or compact dog. Did I mention how long Dexter is? I found 4LazyLegs Pets Carrier and asked them their thoughts on their soft pet carrier sling and if they felt it would be a fit for Dexter.

4LazyLegs Pets Carrier sling review. Sometimes a dog needs a little help and a dog sling just may be the solution. #raisingyourpetsnaturally
Dexter is BIG

The great folks at 4LazyLegs offered to allow Dexter to give it a try. It holds 33 pounds, but they weren’t sure it would really fit his long and tall body as front dog slings are best for more compact dogs.

Front dog sling

When the 4LazyLegs dog sling arrived, I was impressed by the quality of the pet sling. It’s made from 100% cotton canvas and feels and looks very durable and strong. The shoulder strap is very soft and padded to allow for more comfort while carrying your small pet. The shoulder strap is also adjustable to ensure the dog sling sits at the correct potion for carrying. Inside, the sling also has adjustable drawstrings so that you can cinch up your pet inside. There is also a clip to attach to your pet’s collar or harness.

My big dog!

I was super excited to give 4LazyLegs a try. Unfortunately, as we had suspected, Dexter is just too long and tall to safely fit in the pet carrier. The dog sling is just a bit too short for him to be carried. However, they did mention they may be making a larger dog sling! I still think this is an amazing sling for pets smaller than Dexter. Dog slings are a great option for puppies too young to walk in public, dogs nervous in crowds, or special-needs dogs.

If you have a small pet that needs a little assistance, I highly recommend checking out 4LazyLegs. Tell them Dexter sent you. Visit their online store today or check them out on Amazon.
