Dog-Friendly Vacations with Dexter the Dog | Dexter’s Epic 2019 Road Trip
2019 will be the year of dog-friendly traveling and exploring for Dexter and me. Yup, Dexter and I are going to hit the open road and experience some unique dog-friendly destinations. A road trip with Dexter the Dog isn’t new to me, but 2019 is going to be epic, and here’s why.
Road Trip with a Dog
I’m eager to travel the US with Dexter and visit as many states and towns as we can. There are so many impressive dog-friendly cities and states, and I want to see them all with Dexter. I know that may not be possible, but we are going to try to visit as many as we can.
Each Wednesday starting in 2019, Dexter and I are going to start hosting weekly vlogs on all things dog-friendly and related to traveling with dogs. We will be documenting our dog-friendly vacations, weekend getaways, and even short day trips on my YouTube channel then uploading that content, right here on the blog. But, wait, there’s more.
I will be putting together online dog-friendly travel guides highlighting our adventures. Through our vlog and blog you will be able to virtually experience our dog-friendly accommodations, restaurants, festivals, parks, and other fun and quirky activities we may find. I’m on a mission to inspire you to LIVE and explore what this vast world has to offer you and your trusty companion. I’m hoping through our journey, I will motivate you to travel more with your dog or to enjoy your hometown with your dog at your side.

Dexter The Dog’s 2019 Road Trip Destination Goals
I love my dog training clients too much to be a traveling nomad, so our dog-friendly vacations will circle around extended weekends and a few week or two-week trips. I’m still researching and finalizing my dog-friendly vacation ideas, but Dexter and I have narrowed our list to a few key states. Drum roll please… Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. Whew.
If you are looking for some of the best vacations with dogs or dog-friendly vacation ideas, subscribe to my YouTube channel and hit the bell icon to receive notifications. While you’re at it, feel free to subscribe to my weekly newsletter for more information on raising and living with your pets naturally. Dexter and I will see you on the open road.

What a beautiful and happy dog! How lovely to travel with Dexter 🙂
Thank, you Alexandra. He is very special. I’m looking forward to exploring the US with him.
It looks like you’re going to a bunch of cool places! I’m sure you guys will have a blast.
Thanks. We are so excited to be visiting some great destinations. 🙂
i don’t travel with my dog – he HATES cars! he gets so anxious anytime we have to ride off somewhere; drool and everything! happy you and dexter get to explore though, he must be thrilled to see so much of the states.
So, sorry to hear. I do have an article with training tips and natural remedies. https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/dog-car-sickness/
A dear friend of mine has a dog and is often looking for trips where you can not share it, I will share your blog post with her! 😉
Thank you for sharing! I will be vlogging on dog-friendly travel each Wednesday.
You have such a beautiful dog, and how fun to plan a dog-friendly trip. They are like traveling with kids, traveling with a pet must take a lot of extra planning.
Thanks, Heidi. Yes. I really respect those families that travel with their kids and dogs. They rock!
Dogs are such good companions, they can transform lives. Seems like a great trip.
Thanks, Joan. Traveling with Dexter is a great adventure. These destinations are going to be so much fun.
I’ve always wanted to travel with our dogs so this is such a handy series to make. I hope you and dexter have safe travels! I live in PA and it’s a beautiful state to hike in, so I hope you guys make some time to check out the trails and water falls!
Thanks! It’s so much fun. We are headed to Raystown Lake Region in Septemeber. I’m not sure what specifically we will be doing or seeing. Love waterfalls!
Such a cute travel companion that you have. Dogs could be like kids when traveling.
Yes. A bit trickier, since they are not allowed in all spots.
Road trips with animals must be super exciting, but also demanding. I’m happy to read about your experiences and possible destinations. I need to buy a dog now! 🙂
For sure. But, so worth it.
One thing for sure, Dexter sure has a very organised dog Mom who has everything planned all the way to December 2019. Good job and well done.
Hahaha Thanks! I teach group dog training classes, so I need to have all my weeks lined up just right. 🙂
We just got a puppy last week. It’s awesome to see that we can still take road trips with her!
Yes! Starting young is perfect. You might enjoy my book, Proactive Puppy Care. 🙂 https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/naturalpetcarebooks
I’m excited to see your vlogs! Great tips for traveling with our furry friends.
Thank you, Stephanie! Glad to have you along for the ride.
Going to such great places with your furry pal seems like the best thing to do.
Thanks. I think so! We have so much fun together.
I love including my dogs whenever we go on road trips. It’s such a relief that more and more establishments allow pets to be inside.
Me too, April! Yes, people are opening their doors more. We just need to continue to be good doggie advocates.
Sounds like fun & adventures. Hope you have fun with your travel buddy.
Thank you. I’m super excited. We always have a blast.
How lucky is your dog. My dog is unable to stay in the car for long time.
Sorry to hear your dog doesn’t enjoy car rides. Here are some tips that might help– https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/dog-car-sickness/
My parents retired recently and have been traveling in their RV for long periods of time. Their dog loves it! He goes everywhere with them so I will have to let them know some of the fun dog friendly destinations.
Thanks, Jessi. That sounds like so much fun. I’m considering renting an RV in 2020. 🙂
Your dog is adorable! These dog-friendly adventures sound exciting! I’m sure a road trip with a dog is pretty entertaining.
Thanks, Marissa. I love traveling with Dexter. I explore more of an area than when I travel alone. 🙂
We used to love all jumping in the car and heading off somewhere with our dog, sadly we have had to stop these but would love to again in the future
Awe. I hope everyone is OK.
Dexter is so cute!! I love the idea of writing out your plans and goals for the new year. Looks like you and Dexter have a lot of fun and exciting roads trips planned for 2019. We have two dogs and would love to travel with them but they are bigger dogs so that makes it a little harder and not to mention our two toddlers.
Thanks, Terri. My previous dog was a large golden. Great topic idea for me! I will be vloging/writing about all things travel. Thanks for the ideas.
We were be moving by the end of this month to other state. We have a cat that never been travel I hope this tips will works for her as well.
Good luck with your move! I have an article on travel with a dog that can also be helpful for cats. https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/dog-car-sickness/
A road trip with your dog sounds great! I love traveling and my pup enjoys the car rides, so I can only imagine how much fun this would be with my own dog.
Fantastic! Glad to have you along for the ride. Lots to come.
Your dog is adorable! I got a puppy a few months ago and he loves the car but I don’t think I could take him on a road trip. He’s only 8 months and already 95 lbs. He definitely likes his space.
Congratulations! I will be covering traveling with dogs with “issues.” I also have a lot of information on my blog about dog behavior/training. I’ve been a professional dog trainer for 20+ years. 🙂
First off…. I have to say Dexter is adorable! I am also loving your plans for this year and it looks like there are lots of things planned for this amazing pooch 🙂 I cannot wait to read all about them as I love seeing your dog posts.
Awe, thanks Melissa. Dexter is a very special boy. Glad to have you along for our journey.
Such a happy dog! Love it. You have a super cute travel buddy
Thanks, Devyani!
Dexter is truly adorable.. while we do not have pets ourselves, we do know of friends and family who hate leaving their pets while traveling and i will share your blog with them…
Thanks. Thanks for sharing too! Dexter always goes with me. It’s a great way to explore a destination.
I had a dog when I was younger, but I don’t recall ever taking him on a road trip. You’ve certainly covered a lot of miles with yours!
It’s so much fun to travel with a dog. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I had many dogs in my life and I hope to have more in the future. Still, this has always been a problem and I hope in the future it won’t be.
Awe. I travel at least once a month with Dexter. We always find a lot of great things to see and do. Just a little planning before we go.
You guys seem like you’re going to have so much fun in 2019. And Dexter is super adorable!! All the best!!
Thank you, Georgina. I’m so looking forward to all of our great trips.
Tonya that sounds absolutely amazing!! You and Dexter are going to have such a fabulous time, I can’t wait to read about all your adventures.
Thank, you Hindy. Spending time with Dexter is the joy of my life.
This really useful post. We are planning to get a dog this summer. I can use your tips while traveling.
Ya! I will be blogging/vlogging on prepping puppies and new dogs for road trips too. You might also enjoy my book, Proactive Puppy Care. https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/naturalpetcarebooks/
Looks like you have some great trips ahead of you for your dog. I wish I had something like this more local on the west coast to know more places to take my Dog Oreo. This is really cool.
Stay tuned! West is in 2020. However, I hear the west is really dog-friendly. I’ll also be blogging/vlogging on how to plan your own dog-friendly road trip.
Wow, this sounds amazing! We took a road trip from IL to Cape Cod with Ruby last summer. If you are going to Plymouth, I would definitely recommend going out on the Cape for a few days. We found it to be very dog friendly especially in the off season. I look forward to following your adventures!
Thank you, Kristin~ I’m not sure if I’ll have time on that trip, it’s already going to be 2 weeks. But, 2020 is just around the corner. 🙂
That sounds like a very ambitious plan! Looking forward to following your adventures! Big hug to Dexter! I always had a dog as a child, so we might consider getting one for our daughter when she is bigger!
Thank you. Dogs can be a great companion for kids. 🙂
Wow this has to be the most adorable post I read in a while. A dog makes a great best friend and I adore the bond you two share.
Thank you! 🙂
Wow this has to be the most adorable post I read in a while. A dog makes a great best friend and I adore the bond you two share. Adorable dog!
Thank you. We really are bonded. I think a lot of it is because I have always included Dexter in all my travels and journeys.
How fun. I’ve done a few road trips with my dog and they have been interesting. While he doesn’t mind being in the car, getting him to go the bathroom during stops is a huge challenge.
Oh. I’ll be vlogging on dog travel tips too. Here’s an article I wrote on teaching your dog to potty on cue. Very helpful when traveling. https://barksfromtheguild.com/2016/04/11/teaching-your-dog-to-eliminate-on-cue/
Now how adorable is that. I don’t have a dog, I have a cat, so this would be impossible. But having a your fur baby with you on your adventures is awesome.
Believe it or not, I follow some travel channels that travel with their cats! I should do Q&A.
This is really great information! I’m looking forward to your future posts about traveling with your dog.
Thank you! I’m looking forward to sharing our travel adventures and tips.
This story has just made my day! And those pictures of your dog are the cutest.
Thank you!!
This story has just made my day! And those pictures of your dog are the cutest. I don’t have a dog, but I really want to get one this year.
Thanks, Gena. I will be producing content on teaching a new puppy or dog how to be a great travel companion, so stay tuned. Good luck in your search.
What a great idea and Layla is hoping you will visit us in San Francisco 🙂
We would love to finally meet you and Layla. West is 2020 🙂
We traveled with our pugs frequently. Our new pup is a little too energetic so I’ve been hesitant thus far. But I survived traveling with toddlers, so I know I can manage a scruffy rescue dog. Plus, the new experiences are good for all of us. Can’t wait to follow along more of Dexter’s adventures.
That’s fantastic, Melanie. I have quite a few training articles/videos on the blog too. This one might be helpful. 🙂 https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/dog-training-public-outings/
What a fun trip for you both! We look forward to hearing from you on your adventures WooHOOOOOO!
Thanks, Marjorie! I’m excited to share. Heading out on an adventure now. 🙂
Must be great being able to travel with your best friend. Kudos
Thanks, Claire. It’s such a great journey.
Dexter has to be one of the luckiest pets I know. Travelling with Dexter sounds so great …can’t wait to see where you go each time!
Thanks, Dalene. I’m looking forward to sharing!
This is such an informative post for dog owners. Your dog is a cutie.
Thank you!
This will really be an epic road trip! You and Dexter are going to have the best time, and I look forward to yoru vlogs.
Thanks, Lola. I’m super excited to share. I’m editing this week’s vlog now. 🙂
That does sound epic! I look forward to reading about all of your adventures!
Thanks, Beth. I’m so excited! We have had 2 day trips already coming up on the vlog. 🙂
Plush and I will be following along because often if it’s dog friendly it’s cat friendly too – or should be but people don’t know that Traveling Cats are a thing. New England is our stomping grounds, maybe we’ll bump into each other. I’ll be the one with the Persian at the dog thing 🙂
That’s fantastic! People are surprised that people travel with their cats. I’ll check out your content. 🙂
I think it’s great that you are going to be traveling with Dexter. I’d love to visit some of these destinations with my dog as well. I live alone so he travels with me.
I hope you do. Traveling with a dog is so much fun! A great way to bond and connect.
Your schedule looks amazing and you’re going to have so much fun! What an inspiration for other pet owners. Back in the day before vlogging and social media I used to travel with my two cats around Ireland when I lived there. My oldest cat was a show cat so after shows we would travel around the country with our two leash trained kitties and take them for walks on the beaches and cliffs! It was so much fun!
Wishing you safe travels with the handsome Dexter 😉
Wow. That sounds like so much fun. I love hearing that people are traveling with their cats! How fun!
What a busy year for Dexter! I look forward to following along (virtually)!
He does like to stay busy and snoop around. Glad to have you following.
Oh, how fun! I see Maine is on your list, which is where we live with our four rescue dogs (and eight rescue cats!) I’ll be reading and following along.
Oh, Maine has been on my bucket list for a long time. I’m so tickled to be able to finally take Dexter.
First, that top photo is so adorable! I loved the vlog! Eagerly looking forward to seeing more of your trips! So exciting, and to have a video record of your travels together is priceless, and just wonderful to be sharing with others. Happy and Safe Trails to you both!
Thanks, Dorothy. I love going through all of my old videos. Just yesterday I was watching the first day we brought Dexter home. <3
What an adorable pup you have! It’s great to see different places that allow pets during vacations. I know a lot of people that would like to take their dogs with them on vacation but aren’t sure of places that would allow it. I’ll be sure to pass this along. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Nicole. I love sharing all of our great dog-friendly destinations. Some attractions are surprisingly dog-friendly. 🙂
I am planning to buy a dog. And I’d love to visit some of these destinations with my dog as well. Great ideas!
Wonderful! Glad to have you along. I will be vlogging and writing about starting road trips with new dogs and puppies, so stay tuned. You might enjoy my book Proactive Puppy Care. https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/naturalpetcarebooks/
You made traveling with a pet dog so simpler. Your dog is really beautiful. Thanks for the tips. I am also going to take my dog on a road trip following your tips.
So happy to hear! Have a great time.

Thank you. So glad you are going on a road trip with your dog. It’s so much fun. Glad to help.
I can’t wait to see you and Dex’s updates! You’re going to get so many cool photos. Me and the dogs are moving out of state soon, so we’ll be traveling a few hours at a time – I’m going to go on long walks before so they just sleep the whole way, hopefully!
Thanks, Lindsay. Good luck with your move. I remember Dexter’s first 10-hour road trip. He was about 6 months old and I thought it would be tough. I didn’t know then that all he would do on the drives would be sleep. 🙂
Looking forward to this. Maybe you could stop by on your way to Georgia in December next year! We’d love to see you.
<3 Thanks, Paula! I would love to see you and the kitties. :)
Our dog used to travel with us a lot! Unfortunately we lost him almost a year ago. Sometimes road trips are lonely now!
I am so sorry for your loss. It’s going to be hard when I lose my BFF travel buddy.
Dexter is adorable! I love the photos of him touring around. My dogs would not behave for a road trip. Even three hours to our cottage is a mess.
Thank you. Oh, that’s too bad. I have a few articles on travel tips. https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/travel-tips/dog-cat-travel-tips/
Haha, this sounds so fun. Dogs love traveling, I have come across many who are just too friendly and fun loving.
🙂 Dexter loves going on road trips and exploring new smells and new adventures. He loves to say hi to new people friends too.
I’m kinda jealous with your dog, he have more goals for this year than me! That’s really good for him and for you guys. He really knows how to travel 🙂
hahaha He pushes me to do more. Without him, I’d probably stay at home on my computer all day. 😉
Thank you for this article! Many people think that having a dog ties them down a lot, but there are so many ideas about traveling with dogs. Your blog clearly shows that it’s possible!!! Love it.
Thanks, Zenja! Traveling with a dog is certainly a great way to explore. A little work in the beginning, but pays off in the end.
Dexter is sucha cutie! It’s so great that you can take your little pup on a road trip. I wish I could take mine on one but unfortunately my country isn’t very pet-friendly. One day I hope he gets to do this though!
Thanks, Stephanine. That’s sad to hear. Maybe a little digging and you’ll find some great dog-friendly destinations.
A road trip with your dog sounds great! I don’t have a dog right now but I’m seriously considering buying one and have it as my travel buddy
They make the best travel buddies! Good luck in your adventure.
Wow, I never thought to travel with pet. Although I wonder how people manage their luggage and pet both at same time.
You might like my article, Solo driving with a dog. Lots of tips, including luggage. 😉 https://raisingyourpetsnaturally.com/solo-driving-with-dog-safety-tips/
I would say it is more like Road trip with a dog in US ideas :)) Definitely a great article to get the ideas where to travel with a dog. Thanks for sharing!
🙂 Yes, US this year.
I’m going on holiday with my dog soon. I’m so excited! I’m sure I’ll find loads of tips on your blog.
Have a great time! Glad to share.
Dexter has quite an awesome itinerary! We love bringing our pooch with us as well!
🙂 He’s been loving all the new places.
