While my family were traveling throughout New England, finding the perfect pet-friendly hotels was a must. We are past the days of staying in fleabag hotels, but rather search for pet-friendly hotels that are both clean and welcoming. When I’m on the look for a nice dog-friendly hotel, four things are always front and center in my decision-making process. Safety, location, refrigerator, and hotel cleanliness. The Mainstay Hotel & Conference Center in Newport, Rhode Island checked all my boxes.

Upon checking in to the Mainstay Hotel, we were greeted by clean hotel grounds, plenty of parking, and a friendly staff. This welcoming theme continued as we entered our rooms. My parents and I had our own rooms with all the needed amenities. The rooms provided free Wi-Fi, a large comfortable chair, table with chairs, a mini refrigerator, complimentary toiletries, and even an iron and ironing board. Everything that we may need for a two-night stay in Newport.
The hotel also offers an on-site restaurant, North End Steak House. This large hotel restaurant also has an outside dog-friendly patio, perfect for any pooch. The North End Steak House offers more than just juicy steaks. They also have meal items such as seafood and meatloaf dishes. The full bar offers a lot of drink options for the tired traveler.
Other hotel amenities are a seasonal pool, 24-hour business center, guest laundry area, and a variety of meeting and event spaces. The hotel grounds are well-maintained and safe. Half of the hotel rooms have a great view of the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in New England. For dog guests, the hotel had a very large grassy potty area and provided complimentary pick-up bags.
The Mainstay Hotel is in the process of a big renovation and becoming The Wayfinder Hotel. This change will include major updates and new amenities.
The new brand is set to launch in spring, 2020. The hotel will provide 200 large rooms, a full service restaurant, a fitness center, an outdoor pool, two event spaces, lots of parking, and a complimentary continental breakfast. The new design is inspired by the ocean, with custom furnishings, vintage finds, and handcrafted products. During my stay, I was lucky enough to view one of the sample rooms, and boy, are they nice!
Our dog-friendly stay at the Mainstay Hotel & Conference Center Newport, RI was a great experience. Having spent time with the management during my visit and viewed the new room, I’m putting this hotel on my must-visit-again list.

This looks like a great spot for a traveling pup! I take my dog on most road trips and a hotel like this is ideal. Thanks for sharing your story – and a video of the property, too!
As a travel agent, I appreciate having a site to send clients to if they have pet-related travel questions.
What an awesome place to stay. I always like pet friendly spots. Sometimes we have to take our cats with us if we move.
What a great place to stay in with your pet! I’ll need to check it out when I’m in the neighbourhood, as I’m really curious to see it on my own. š
It looks like a nice place. This is great for those who travel with dogs and it looks like your dog approves.
Very cute hotel, I love the floors in the room. And I’d love to try out the steakhouse, yummy! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!
This place sounds fantastic. I have a dog (I’ve had a dog pretty much my entire life) and it is incredible to me how there are so few pet-friendly hotels. I’ll keep them in mind when I go to visit friends in Rhode Island. Thanks for the tip.
The conversation around adopting a family dog has come up again. It’s really great knowing there are places that we can travel with one if we do decide to adopt.
The room looks very cosy and it seems that Dexter enjoyed the bed very much. It’s nice that they have a patio for dogs, as well as a green area.
It is so awesome that you are able to find dog friendly places everywhere! And I really want to go to a steakhouse now!
Dexter is just too cute! Iām happy to see Rhode Island mentioned here. I was born there! š
I’d love to stay somewhere like this where you can bring your dogs. It would be lovely having your companion there with you while on vacation and meeting everyone else’s companions.
This looks like a great place to bring a pup!
We never take my daughters dog with us on vacation. Our neighbor usually cares for him while we’re gone.
Finding pet-friendly hotels is just so difficult. I enjoy reading your posts.
