I’m often asked how often to give a dog a bath. The answer is that your dog should have a bath as often as necessary. If he’s a dirty dog, dog bathing may be every two weeks. Dexter gets a dog bath about every 2-4 weeks, depending on his activities.

Six months ago I reviewed 4-Legger’s Conditioning Shampoo and fell in love with it. Today, I’m going to talk about their Unscented and Hypoallergenic Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Aloe.
4-Legger’s unscented hypoallergenic organic dog shampoo is geared toward dogs with very sensitive skin or sensitivity to aromas. The ultra-gentle dog shampoo cleans and moisturizes with organic oils and soothing aloe vera, without stripping the natural oils from your dog’s coat.
But wait, there’s more! This isn’t your typical all-natural shampoo for itchy skin or allergies—it’s much more than that. This organic dog shampoo can be customized with your own high quality, certified organic essential oil blends! This is perfect for those dog parents, working with a holistic veterinarian on a medical issue or skin condition, who can use a little extra help in the grooming department. Just tell your veterinarian and they can advise you on what essential oils to add to your blend.
It’s important to note that essential oils can be very helpful, but they are also very potent. Dogs are not small humans, and should not be treated the same. Some common essential oils you may see in pet products that I personally avoid are anise, clove, oregano, red or white thyme, and wintergreen. Keep in mind that every dog is different and some may have dermatitis as a result of using essential oils. Do a small patch test before you bathe your dog in your custom dog shampoo to make sure he’s not sensitive to it.
A few pointers in selecting and formulating your custom dog shampoo.
- Use high-quality, certified organic essential oils
- No more than 6 drops of essential oils per ounce
- Mix up 2-ounce containers to ensure you enjoy the blend
Before I go into two blends I made for Dexter, I wanted to provide you with the ingredients inside the 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo. This is something I feel is an important part of my pet product reviews, so I always like to provide the entire ingredient panel for you. Ingredients: Saponified organic oils of coconut, olive, and jojoba, organic aloe vera, and rosemary extract (preservative). That’s it. All safe and healthy ingredients that I feel totally comfortable using on Dexter as often as he needs a dog bath.
Natural Tick Shampoo Blend
- 2 ounces 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo
- 3 drops Cedarwood (Atlas Cedar), Cedrus atlantica
- 3 drops Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens
- 3 drops Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus
- 3 drops Myrrh, Commiphora myrrha
Immune Booster Shampoo Blend
- 2 ounces 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo
- 3 drops Coriander Seed Essential Oil, Coriandrum savitum
- 3 drops Niaouli Essential Oil, Melaleuca quinquenervia
- 3 drops Palmarosa Essential Oil, Cymbopogon martinii
- 3 drops Ravensara Essential Oil, Ravensara aromatica
When bathing your dog, ensure that you fully wet your dog down from head to tail (learn how to give a dog a bath here). Shake your custom organic dog shampoo and apply to the palm of your hand and rub throughout your dog’s coat. Because 4-Legger doesn’t use chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate (a chemical to produce foam and lather), you will notice the consistency is thinner than you may expect. But don’t worry—you still need to use only a small amount, just add more water to increase suds. If you find you really miss the foam, 4-Legger offers a Foamer Bottle which has a special pump that infuses air into the liquid shampoo as it is pumped from the bottle.
After Dexter fully dried and I brushed him out, I was once again pleased with the results. Dexter’s white was white, and his reds were red. He was smooth and silky, and had a fresh, clean scent.

When I lived with my ex and our puppy, I gave him his first bath at 6 months old (my ex only had a shower, so a bath was difficult with a big black boisterous lab puppy!). The water ran black for the first 5 minutes of the shower, he was that filthy! After that I bathed him a lot more regularly 🙂 he didn’t have any allergies or skin conditions, but he did like to roll around in the mud A LOT x
OMG I bet he felt so good after his bath. My guy has to use a bathtub and shower handle. Some dogs/people are lucky that they can sink wash!

With two (white) golden retrievers who like to roll in the mud and bury bones in the backyard .. I swear they’re always in the bath. This time of year and in the the fall, Edie gets bathed more frequently – usually every 2 weeks, to help eliminate the “itchies” that are caused by the environment such as fresh cut grass and the mouldy leaves in the fall. A good dog shampoo is definitely important, you don’t just pick something off the shelf. You need to read and check if it’s something that your dog can benefit from. I think it’s nice that this is unscented and hypoallergenic as well.

This is pretty cool to be able to customize your dog’s shampoo with essential oils! I bathe Phoebe every 3-4 weeks usually. Icy gats bathed less frequently, mainly because she’s too big for me to do it myself so she goes to the groomer.

This might be great for my Maltese. She suffers from allergies and sometimes in the summer has very itchy skin. The vet thinks some of her allergies are seasonal, so she recommends that Nelly gets extra baths in the summer.
Poor Nelly. This is the issue with Dexter too. Just coming in from walks he starts digging if I don’t wipe him down.
