Today, I wanted to share a homemade healthy dog treat recipe from my dog treat cookbook, Dexter’s Delights. By taking your dog’s treats into your own hands, you are able to provide him with the healthiest and safest foods. Healthy and quality is the foundation of all my pet recipes. When at all possible, choose organic and fresh foods. Organic foods do not use harmful insecticides, fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, radiation, or other detrimental ingredients or practices. If you cannot find organic, look for non-GMO, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, grass-fed, and humanely raised.

But first, let’s talk a little bit about some of the health benefits of pumpkin for dogs.  Pumpkin is probably one of the staples in most dog owners’ pet cupboards. I bet you already know that pumpkin is full of fiber and can help a dog or cat when he has loose stools or diarrhea. But be careful – too much pumpkin can go the other way. Try 1 or 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree for most dogs and 1 to 3 teaspoons for cats. Pumpkin is rich in vitamin A, C, potassium, lutein, and zeaxanthin.  It is an antioxidant, low in calories and can boost immunity, Read more about the health benefits of pumpkin for your dog here.
