2019 has been proving to be a banner year in our dog-friendly road trips. I was finally able to take Dexter along with his buddy Levi, to visit Maine. Maine has been on my list of must-visit states for many, many years. Not only did we have a great pet-friendly getaway, we stayed in one of the best resorts I’ve ever had the pleasure of calling home for a couple of nights.

The Inn by the Sea is an oceanfront Maine resort just outside the vibrant city of Portland, Maine. This dog-friendly luxury resort offers sixty-one guest rooms and one- or two-bedroom suites making the Inn by the Sea a perfect spot for dog lovers, couples, and families.
This pet-friendly Maine accommodation doesn’t just allow dogs, they embrace them! The luxury resort has been welcoming dogs and their owners for over 25 years with over-the-top pampering including bowls, LL Bean sleeping blankets, and beach towels on arrival and organic Maine-made turndown treats from Growlin Gourmet.
The inn has never charged pet fees, has no size limit to guest dogs, has a gourmet menu for dogs, and welcomes owners and dogs to eat together in their indoor fireplace lounge. In the warm months, dogs are also welcome to join their owners on the seaside deck for meals.
The inn’s signature restaurant, Sea Glass Restaurant, is known for their fine dining. Menu items are inspired by the seasons and are sure to delight your taste buds. Executive Chef Andrew Chadwick’s creations feature fresh, local seafood and produce. You and your dog can eat outside on the deck, inside in the fireplace lounge, or take your meals back to your luxury suite.
Not only does the Inn by the Sea welcome dogs of all sizes to stay at the inn, they also offer a foster-dog program in collaboration with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. One hundred fifty foster dogs have been in residence at the upscale inn and have been adopted by guests and taken to forever homes since the inn’s adoption program began three years ago.
The inn’s foster program has been a huge success. Working with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, the inn fosters one dog at a time at their seaside resort. The staff welcome the dogs and offers them a temporary home—housing, feeding, playing with, and loving the dog until adopted. Guests also enjoy interacting with the foster dogs, and, happily, some fall in love and adopt.
People can enjoy the heated pool, cardio room, and morning yoga. You won’t want to leave the resort without enjoying some of their full service SPA treatments such as massage therapies, facial treatments, and body treatments. They will leave you rejuvenated and refreshed for your day out with your dog.
The Inn by the Sea doesn’t just care about the dogs, they also care about our environment. Their unique goal is to blend luxury, service and an exceptional guest stay with environmental preservation, minimizing the impact of hotel operations with their eco-friendly initiatives and an appreciation of all things local.
The inn is surrounded by indigenous gardens that provide food and habitat for local wildlife and their rooms are cleaned with non-toxic Green Seal products. Guest room amenities are natural, made in the USA, packaged in recyclable containers, and displayed on recycled glass trays. Their sheet-and-towel program helps fund habitat restoration for bunnies. They also support the local community by showcasing products from local growers and craftspeople.
Inn by the Sea is located 7 miles south of Portland’s urban-chic small port city on a mile of unspoiled sand beach. With traditional shingled coastal architecture but decidedly modern interiors the inn offers guests and their dogs an upscale resort experience. With large grassy areas to explore and nearby dog-friendly beaches and attractions, the Inn by the Sea is a perfect dog-friendly resort.
If you are looking for a dog-friendly luxury resort in Maine, you won’t find one better than the Inn by the Sea. I know we didn’t want to leave!

I only travel to dog-friendly places so I’ll definitely keep this inn in mind if we’re ever in the area. I love the look of this place and everything about it.
Me too! My favorite place so far.
Holy man, what a great way to spoil our 4-legged friends. This place looks absolutely stunning!
You said that right!
How fun!!! I find it so hard to find pet friendly hotels and then not only you don’t have all your loved ones with you but you have the added expense and concerns about boarding them. No good! This looks like a great one, gotta try soon!!
And no pet fees! There’s no doubt this is a win.
Oh my goodness the inn’s foster dog program is such a good idea and a wonderful way to help find the dogs a home.
I agree! It’s so amazing that they are so caring.
I dont travel with a dog but this would be a great place for friends who have dogs. This place has a nice pool.
It’s definitely a spot anyone can enjoy.
This is such a lovely area! I’ve never been to Maine before, but I’ve always wanted to go. My husband wants to eat all the seafood.
There was plenty of seafood to go around. I loved our trip to Maine.
It seems like a beautiful resort. And glad it is a place that allows pets.Beautiful pictures and happy dogs in these.Cute…
Thank you. We had a wonderful stay.
Dexter looks like a very happy boy enjoying the green outdoors of the Inn by the Sea in Maine. It’s very heartwarming to read about the Inn’s dog foster care program, it’s the first of its kind I hear of.
Thanks, Joanna. It’s the first foster program supported by an inn that I know of too. Such a great way to help dogs.
Dog friendly spa sounds heaven to me! Way too good to be true! I wish I could relax in spa with my doggos but alas we don’t have any at least remotely near
Well, the dogs would likely be snoozing in their luxury sweets while the humans enjoy the spa. 😉
What an amazing location and great facilities. Like the fact that they offer one and two-bedroom suites. The spa, heated pool and food sound lovely as well. I am blown away by their foster dog program.
The foster dog program is so unique. They truly love dogs. 🙂
I have always wanted to travel with my pet but never did it. I thought it would be to much work. You make it look so easy and so much fun when the hotels are Pet Friendly.
Traveling with Dexter is a ton of fun. It takes a little planning, but it’s so worth it.
Thank you very much for letting us know about this. This information is very useful for my travel book. Happy blogging!
Thanks! So glad to share.
That resort does look fantastic. Maine is on my list of places to go too.
I am so glad I was finally able to visit Maine with Dexter.
Lovely place looks so nice to take pets along. I have always wanted to visit Maine and it is not to far from me.
You must go, Cynthia! We had the best time.
NEVER have I been more excited to read a blog post! I’ve been to this resort TWICE! The second time, my husband and I eloped just down on the beach!
Wow! Congratulations! That is so neat.
That seems like a great place for me to visit with my dog. I love that it is by the sea. Thanks for sharing
Happy to share. It was such a great find.
What a perfect getaway for the dogs and you! I like that the inn is surrounded by gardens and that the rooms are cleaned with non-toxic Green Seal products.
It was a perfect getaway for sure. I really appreciated their green cleaning.
These two kill me every single time, super super cute! I love the place, looks amazing, wow!!!
Thanks, Chad. They really do have a good time when they travel.
I love when locations are pet friendly. This place is getting added to my destination bucket list.
Fantastic! It is a must-see resort and area. Portland is extremely dog-friendly.
I have traveled with my dog occasionally. He gets a little confused about being in a hotel, but we’ve never stayed at a resort like this one. I bet he would love being able to explore more than just the room.
Hotels can be tricky for some dogs. The Inn by the Sea was a great experience with plenty of room for the dogs inside and out.
This resort sounds a nice place to stay with some lovely facilities, food and views to offer and importantly is also pet friendly, which will help many travelers to travel without hassles.
The views were amazing! We had such a great time.
I love the details and care. It’s super cute and fun to read to be honest.
Thanks! It was a treat to be able to share such a great resort.
