Dog-Friendly Banana, Blueberry, and Coconut Dog Birthday Cake
Dexter’s 8th Dog Birthday Cake Recipe
For Dexter The Dog’s eighth birthday, I decided to make him a healthy homemade dog birthday cake. I know, it’s no big surprise, but I really do try to look for the best ingredients when I make healthy dog treats and snacks for him. I was completely tickled when I ran across organic banana flour in my local store. Iād never heard of banana flour, so I thought it might be a good dog-friendly option for Dexter’s dog cake.
First, Dexter loves bananas and they are extremely healthy and safe for dogs. Unfortunately for Dexter, though, banana flour does not taste like bananas after baking. Second, by using organic banana flour, I would be avoiding wheat flour. I did do a little research on the health benefits of banana flour before starting, since this was going to be a new flour for me.
Banana flour is made from unripe green bananas before the sugar content has fully developed. That’s always a plus when making healthy treats and cakes for dogs. The green bananas are dried and ground into a flour before packaging.
Banana flour is high in starch and you will find that most recipes use about 30% less flour than if the recipe called for wheat flour. This is also good, because flour tends to be high in calories. As a bonus, banana flour is about 400 calories per cup, whereas wheat flour is around 455 calories per cup. So, less flour AND fewer calories per cup. One more bonus: banana flour is gluten-free.
I was excited to give this gluten-free flour a try for Dexter’s birthday cake. I hope your dog enjoys this cake recipe as much as Dexter did!

I was just thinking the other day about what I want to do for Charlie’s birthday. He’s actually a picky eater, but I’m definitely going to give this recipe a trial run because I want to make his birthday cake for him and his friends. Thanks!
Fantastic! I’d love to hear about it. You can also search “cake” and I have a few other options.
What a cute cake! It looks like Dexter is really enjoying it. I’m sure lots of dogs will enjoy this recipe.
Thanks, Lola. I need to try some kitty things. š
I haven’t heard of banana flour either. Mr. N doesn’t really like carbs so if I made him a birthday cake, it would have to be a meatloaf cake with yogurt frosting or something. And probably cupcake size.
Meat is always a win for Dexter!
That looks so lovely. You guys ought to stop making me hungry. I don’t know how much of this Cookie would actually get to eat. LOL
lol Human friendly too. But, dry for our pallet.
Happy 8th Birthday to Dexter! It looks like he loved his birthday cake. Banana flour is new to me, too! It was interesting to learn about the benefits of using banana flour. Thanks for sharing!
Sure thing! It’s always fun to experiment with healthy ingredients.
I have never heard of banana flour either and am going to check more into this. Layla last birthday I made her a turkey meat loaf (cupcake size) with cottage cheese as frosting but this sounds so much better so am going to keep it in mind for her next one, thanks and once again happy Birthday Dexter
You bet! Turkey meatloaf is always a hit with Dexter.
Happy Birthday Dexter!! Glad you enjoyed your yummy birthday cake. Nom nom nom.
Thanks, Kamira. Oh, boy, did he!
Huh, I’ve never tried banana flour. I’ll have to try that next time I’m baking something for the pups. I try to avoid wheat flour as much as I can. This cake looks delicious!
š Yes, nothing good about wheat for our pets.
I will occasionally bake the boys treats, and sometimes will make treats for the dogs at our vendor events. This is a great idea!
How fun!
* fits of laughter *
Well done with the photograph, it made me laugh out loud its so much fun. Proof indeed that the recipe WORKS.
:–)
š Thanks! I was laughing as I had to grab it to ensure he didn’t eat the entire cake! lol
I don’t think I knew banana flour existed either. I’ve scoured the ingredients at Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, but I’m always finding new products. Bernie and Lizzie think this birthday cake option sounds pretty yummy! I’m excited because this recipe sounds quite manageable to make and share with others.
Thanks, Irene. It’s fun finding new, healthy, alternative ingredients for baking for our pets. I’m going to keep looking! Yes, pretty darn easy to make.
Happy Birthday to Dexter! What a very festive looking snood, and what a great idea to keep his ears clean while eating!
I never heard of banana flour, and I’m a little sad that it doesn’t taste like bananas when it is baked. My mind was racing with ideas of what to try to make with it. However, it sure sounds like a healthy alternative to wheat. One of my dogs is allergic to wheat, so I use other flours if I bake for her.
Thanks, Beth~! We ordered a new stash of snoods to match the blog colors. š Me too, on the lack of banana flavor. But, it baked nicely.
Looks like Dexter is really enjoying the birthday cake. I admire that you make something homemade!
He sure did. I do for Dexter, but not for me. š
Not heard of banana flour. The Poodle Pair loves bananas, though! Might have to check this out! Thanks!
š Super healthy. Unfortunately, once cooked, loses banana flavor.
That looks amazing. Ralph and Luna would certainly gobble it up. I’ll have to pin for Luna’s birthday in March or maybe a special holiday treat.
Thanks, Jessica. š Happy birthday, Luna!
Have you tried banana flour in cookie recipes?
I have not. This was the first time I used the flour. I’d love to hear if you try!
