Being high allows a cat to view his world from a relatively safe location. Maybe the reason cats want to be high up is from their ancestral days, when they climbed trees to escape other predators or to hunt their prey from concealment. Although the house cat does not have to hunt his prey, some do still enjoy the security of being high, especially when under stress from their home environment.
