Don’t let a busy schedule stand in the way of feeding your pet a healthy raw pet food diet. I often hear pet parents say they can’t feed their pets a species-appropriate diet because they don’t have time to make a balanced raw diet at home. Or that their pet store does not carry raw pet food. But luckily for health-conscious pet parents, Darwin’s Natural Pet Products offers Dog and Cat Food Delivery right to your door! Darwin’s pet food convenient delivery service – a subscription-style pet food delivery service.

But let me back up a little and tell you why I’m a fan of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products and why their brand is part of both Dexter’s and Nutter’s food rotation.

Pet Food Made with Human Grade and Grain-Free Ingredients

Darwin’s starts with human-grade ingredients—nothing you would find on the cutting room floor or in a large garbage bin waiting to be turned into “pet feed.” No, all ingredients are human-grade, high-quality, and fresh. All of Darwin’s recipes are grain-free and fully balanced to meet the needs of your carnivore.

Antibiotic- and Hormone-Free Options

I believe in feeding Dexter and Nutter antibiotic- and hormone-free meats in their daily food. This is actually a deal breaker for me when choosing a raw dog or cat food. Darwin’s Natural Selections line uses meat from animals that are cage-free (free-roaming) or pasture raised, grass-fed, and free of steroids, antibiotics, or artificial growth hormones. They even visit every farm that raises the animals used in their meals to ensure they employ good farming practices and treat both their animals and employees with respect.

Raw Pet Food Made Fresh

At Darwin’s, the food is made fresh, then immediately frozen in vacuum-sealed packages to preserve quality and nutrition naturally. Darwin’s takes pride in being the freshest in the market by delivering the food within 4-6 weeks from production! Darwin’s lists a manufacture date on each meal, instead of an expiration date.

Free Menu Consultation and Prescription Meals

If you are new to Darwin’s, raw food, or just don’t know where to start, Darwin’s offers a free menu consultation service. They also offer a HEALTHY prescription diet line. Intelligent Design™ Veterinary meals for dogs are specialized formulas designed to provide extra support to dogs facing certain health issues.

I am so happy you are looking to switch your dog or cat from a dry, highly-processed pet food to a fresh, natural raw pet food diet. Yay! You should be extremely pleased with yourself that you are ready to make the leap. Your dog or cat’s health will improve dramatically after you change to a raw pet food, such as Darwin’s Natural Pet Products. But the big question is always, HOW. SLOWLY.

If your pet has been eating dry dog food for most of his life, his gut may not be in the best shape. But don’t worry, by switching to a raw dog or raw cat food, you will be working at restoring his gut microbiome, which is essential to good health.

Transitioning Your Dog to a Raw Dog Food Brand

Plan on transitioning your dog full time to raw over about 7-10 days. By changing your dog’s food from dry kibble to raw slowly, you will help prevent gastrointestinal upset. However, don’t be surprised if your dog’s stools change. You may even notice a little mucus coating as your dog goes through a detoxification and his body eliminates toxins he has built up over time. As your dog eats more fresh food, he will also start to utilize the nutrients and eventually his stools will likely become firmer and smaller. This is all good!

  • Raw dog food should be served at room or body temperature
  • Days 1-3: Start your dog’s transition with a 75/25 split of his old food and new food.
  • Days 4-5: Increase the raw food to a 50/50 split.
  • Days 6-7: Increase the raw food to a 25/75 split.
  • Day 8: You did it! 100% raw.

Transitioning Your Cat to a Raw Cat Food Brand

Oh, the finicky cat! It’s not necessarily that your cat is finicky; it’s just that cats can be leery of change, especially when their cat food is changing. But changing your cat from a dry cat food or a canned cat food to a raw cat food diet is worth the time and effort it may take.

No More Free-Feeding Cats

If your cat is used to having a bowl of food available 24/7, that’s the first thing to change. Start with four regular feeding times per day. Place your cat’s current food down for about 30 minutes, then remove what he doesn’t eat until his next feeding. Be patient with your kitty. However, it’s important to realize that cats will starve themselves, so do not allow more than 24 hours in between meals.

Once you have established a cat feeding schedule, add about ½ tablespoon of the raw cat food to your cat’s current food. At this point, you just want your cat to start getting accustomed to the taste, smell and texture of the food. Just like raw dog food, the food should be at room temperature, not cold. If your cat refuses, add even less raw with your cat’s regular food.

Once your cat is eating his raw and dry cat food, very gradually increase the amount of raw and decrease the dry. SLOWLY. You can expect this transition to take about four weeks. If your cat is eating a mix of raw and kibble, but not quite making the 100% switch, that’s okay. Just keep going, but a bit slower. Your patience will be worth it in the end!

Pro Tip from Darwin’s Natural Pet Products“Feed you cat on a small plate. Put their usual food in the middle and dab half moon shapes of Darwin’s around the lip of the plate. The cat will eat it. We don’t know why, It has zero scientific backup, but has worked for most customers in the past.”

Transitioning Tips, Concerns and Reminders

  • Raw pet food should be served at body or room temperature. To achieve this, stir in a little warm water.
  • Most prepared raw diets can be lightly cooked (raw), which can help during the transition period. Once transitioned, lessen the cooking to get back to raw.
Transitioning your dog or cat to a raw pet food diet. A species appropriate raw pet food diet is a great way to provide your pet optimal health. #raisingyourpetsnaturally
Lightly cook raw pet food
  • Use a flat plate to feed your cat.
  • Not all pets tolerate a raw pet food diet. Some pets have a weakened immune system and they cannot process raw food. In this case, consider lightly cooking a prepared raw or a home-cooked diet.
  • If you are concerned, speak to a holistic vet specializing in fresh diets.
  • Be patient, but don’t starve your cat.  Cats must eat every 24 hours.

Once you have successfully switched your dog or cat from a dry pet food to a fresh, raw pet food brand, you should start to see your pet’s health improve. His coat will likely get shiny, his energy will improve, and he will be so happy he is eating a fresh and healthy pet food. But don’t stop at one protein source; it’s important to rotate proteins and other ingredients to ensure optimal health and nutrition. More on that topic soon!

Darwin’s Raw Dog Food

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

From the beginning of my 20-year career in dog behavior, I have been asked, “What is the best dog food?” Over the years, my answer has remained the same: “It depends.” Truly, finding the best dog food for your dog depends on a lot of factors. Are you looking for the best dog food for skin allergies, homemade dog food recipes, raw dog food recipes, or a prepared holistic pet food?

When people ask me what the best dry dog food is, I basically cringe. I get it. I know some people are always going to feed a dry dog food, but I don’t think a dry pet food is the healthiest option for your dog and certainly not for your cat. Dry pet food is heavily processed at high heat, removing all the moisture and goodness from the food. Fresh food, whether from a balanced home-cooked diet, balanced home-prepared raw, raw pet food company, or home-cooked pet food company will always provide a fresher, healthier diet.

When people ask me for the best dog food, I assume they want to feed their dogs a species-appropriate, high-quality dog food. I personally look for several things when evaluating the quality of a dog food. In a good dog food, I’m looking for meat, meat, and more meat. I shoot for 70% or more meat in Dexter‘s diet. I look for meats free of antibiotics and hormones. The remaining portion of Dexter’s food can be healthy fruits and vegetables, and I’m not opposed to healthy grains or carbohydrates in small quantities. Ideally, I look for ingredients that are organic, human-grade, and sourced in a country with a good quality-control program.

Figuring out all the details when choosing a pet food brand can be time consuming, but Dexter is well worth the time. If you have visited Raising Your Pets Naturally in the past, you probably know that I home-cook for Dexter almost exclusively. However, I do occasionally recommend and use great dog food brands, especially when traveling. Darwin’s Pet Products is one of those brands.

Natural raw diet dog food

I’m a big fan of a raw-food dog diet. However, it’s not for every person, and it’s not for every dog. Dexter is one of these dogs. With Dexter’s neurological condition and weakened immune system, he does not tolerate a fresh raw diet very well; he tends to get the scoots. However, Darwin’s raw dog food can be gently cooked “rare” (i.e., cooking the meat, but not the ground bones). This is what I do when feeding Darwin’s to Dexter, and he does great, with no digestion issues.

Gently Cooked Dog Food

Does Dexter like Darwin’s Natural Pet Products? Seriously? You have to ask? Dexter is a huge fan. He gobbles up every last morsel and looks at me for seconds. The question should be whether or not I like a particular pet food brand. I have been a fan of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products for a few years, and even rotate their cat food into Nutter The Cat‘s diet.

Gobbled every last bit

Darwin’s raw dog food is 75% meat, 25% vegetables, and under 1% trace minerals and vitamins. No guesswork on how much meat your dog is getting. And it’s not low-quality meat that you might find in a rendering plant or low-quality pet food manufacturing facility. Darwin’s offers two dog food lines: Natural Selections and ZooLogics. Their Natural Selections line contains high-quality, antibiotic- and hormone-free meats from New Zealand, Australia, and the USA, with organic vegetables. Their ZooLogics line is a more economical line of raw dog food, made with conventionally-grown meats and vegetables from the same farms that supply your supermarket.

Currently, Darwin’s offers raw dog food made with chicken, duck, turkey, beef, or lamb. Darwin’s eliminates the middle-man by shipping directly to the customer. They even include a pre-paid return label so you can return the special insulated shipping container back to Darwin’s. If you live in the Seattle and Portland Metropolitan Areas, you receive free home delivery!

Darwin’s raw dog food is super simple to feed. Each 8-ounce frozen, vacuum-sealed bag has an EZ Peel tab in the corner, making it a breeze to open without a mess. They also provide a nice container with a lid to store any unused food. Frozen food can last at least six months when kept frozen. Once defrosted, keep the raw pet food in the refrigerator for up to two days.

The first step in our transition was to thaw two packages of the raw Natural Selections turkey. This was easy—I just placed a block in the handy container provided, and popped it into the refrigerator for the day. The next day, I gently cooked Dexter’s food and allowed it to cool. Because Dexter is used to a variety of foods, I was able to quickly transition him to test out Darwin’s gently cooked dog food. I started with a 50/50 mix of his current food and Darwin’s. By day two, Dexter was happily eating Darwin’s raw turkey, but gently cooked. He was a happy camper!

Darwin’s Raw Turkey Dog Food Ingredients: Free-Range Meat (76.90%): Turkey Necks (including bone), Turkey Thigh Meat, Turkey Livers, Turkey Hearts, and Turkey Gizzards. REAL FOOD BABY!

I know, I missed it.  Dexter The Dog and I headed for Vermont the last week in October and I just was not able to get this post finished before our departure. I hope you can forgive me and enjoy a belated National Cook for Your Pets Day. 🙂

Finally, a national holiday I can really celebrate! For National Cook for Your Pets Day, I thought it would be a good time to talk about people food vs. pet food. Is there a difference? Well, there actually is, but it may not be what you think. Pet food is considered animal feed and not fit for human consumption. And you may think a named meat such as “chicken” means that meat was handled properly and your dog is getting a high-quality cut of meat, but that may not be the case. Most pet food manufacturers use leftovers from the human food industry, such as out-of-date meat and remainder parts such as beaks, feathers, and fat. Even meat from animals referred to as 4D – dead, dying, diseased and disabled – is fair game. And please don’t even consider food that says “meat” or “animal,” because this can include road kill, euthanized cats and dogs, and zoo animals. Now, that does not mean ALL pet food manufacturers are using awful waste materials like these, but most are, so do your research if you are feeding your beloved pet processed pet food.

So just how does a dedicated pet parent provide the best food for your cats or dogs? My first suggestion is to make your own home-cooked pet food or home-prepared raw diet. My second is to find one of the very few pet food companies that use human-grade ingredients that contain mostly meat (75% or more) and ideally organic ingredients, or at least free of antibiotics and hormones. Researching how to safely cook for your pet or how to find the best food company does take time, effort, and energy, but aren’t your pets worth it? I think so.

Need a little inspiration?  Check out the Pet Nutrition page for dog and cat recipes.

A big shout out to my friends at Sojos! They have been sending me some great, healthy dog food and dog treats to sample and review. Feel free to read my Sojos Turkey Dog Food review. Today it is going to be about Sojos Simply Lamb Dog Treats. Treats, my favorite! My Mom is the best when I get to try healthy dog foods and dog treats. I could, of course, do without the dog grooming reviews!

Healthy Dog Treat Reviews
100% Meat

Mom had to do her normal photo shoot of the treats before I could actually taste them. I watched her patiently from the dining room. I sure wish she didn’t take so long setting up those dog treat photos. Ok, finally Mom came back and asked if I was ready to try my Sojos Simply Lamb Dog Treats. Why, that’s a silly question. When have I ever said no to food? I happily followed her as she opened my package of healthy dog treats.

Oh, heaven. As I bit down on my lamb dog treat, my eyes widened with delight. These mouth-watering morsels are just divine. We dogs love meat. And that’s just what we get with Sojos Simply Meat Treats. It’s the real, raw meat we crave. These treats were really tasty! The Sojos lamb treat had a great texture and nice snap as I crunched it. I wanted more and thankfully, Mom gave me a few more to eat.

Sojos Simply Lamb Dog Treats are packed with great flavor and truly have the “drool factor” Mom talks about in dog training. Mom says that if someone wants to use these treats for dog training, the treats can be easily broken into small bites and placed into a baggie during a training lesson. However, because these are raw treats, people need to wash their hands after handling them. That means these treats are best used for training specific behaviors inside the home and not out and about. Leftover treats can be kept in the resealable bag.

Natural Dog Treats and Reviews
No Fillers, All Meat

Not only do these treats taste great, but they are also healthy. A single-sourced ingredient made with USDA freeze-dried raw lamb. The freeze-drying process is slow and low so that all natural enzymes are carefully protected. No GMOs, fillers, preservatives or artificial colors or flavors. No ingredients from China, and made in their own factory in the USA.

Sojos Simply Lamb Dog Treats Ingredients: 100% freeze-dried lamb
Pros: 100% USDA lamb, healthy treat, very enjoyable, lamb raised in the US and manufactured in the US
Cons: You have to be comfortable with raw

Sojos Simply Lamb Dog Treats are a BIG WIN in my book! Thank you Sojos for the great, healthy dog treats.

Today was another great day of reviewing tasty dog food. I can get used to this! The generous people at Primal Pet Foods Inc. were kind enough to send me some samples of their Primal Pet Foods Freeze-Dried and Primal Munchies Pet TreatsClick here for the review. Right now I want to tell you about the Primal Pet Foods Freeze Dried-Chicken Formula they sent me.

Healthy Raw Dog Foods Reviewed
Primal Raw Dog Food

Because this is an actual healthy raw dog food, Mom talked with my veterinarian food therapist, Dr. Judy Morgan prior to giving me this new food. I’m on a home-cooked, primarily organic diet, so Mom wanted to check to see how my belly would hold up to a food switch for a day. Dr. Morgan felt the ingredients were along the same lines I’m used to getting, and she didn’t think the fact that it was a raw diet would bother me. She just wanted to confirm that Mom would continue to give me my regular probiotics and supplements.

While Mom was outside taking photographs of my new Primal Pet Foods, I was watching her with eager anticipation through the dining room window. I’m not sure why she is so insistent about taking photos and making me wait. But I am a patient boy, so I waited. Finally, it was time to sink my teeth into Primal Pet Foods Freeze Dried-Chicken Formula…..well, after a few more photos.

Primal Raw Nuggets

Mom first let me eat one of the Primal Chicken Nuggets just like a healthy treat. Oh, and it was good. So good! It was a very soft and easily chewed up piece of heaven. I couldn’t believe Mom was giving me the whole nugget to eat at once! As you know, Mom has a tendency to break up my treats into tiny pieces. But not this time! I got the whole chicken nugget. I’m not complaining, not one bit. I could get used to this.

Next, she decided to follow the directions on the bag and rehydrate a nugget. The directions were 1 tablespoon of water to one crumbled nugget, then stir. It looked good to me. Yup, tasted just as great! I kept looking at Mom for more, but she told me this was just a bonus since I’d already eaten dinner.

Primal Raw Soaking

Because I travel a lot with Mom and bringing my home-cooked dog meals or cooking on dog vacations can be challenging, Mom is thinking about using Primal Pet Foods Freeze-Dried Formulas as part of my food ration. They have a lot of formulas and protein options. I really do like it, and it would make life a lot easier on the road.

It’s time to take a look at Primal Pet Foods Freeze-Dried Formulas and see what makes it so good, healthy, and nutritious. Primal Freeze-Dried Formulas are produced using only the freshest, human-grade ingredients. Their poultry, meat, and game are antibiotic- and steroid-free without added hormones. Primal Formulas only contain meats, poultry, and game that come from 100% natural, vegetarian-fed protein sources that are processed and inspected under strict USDA guidelines for safety and sanitation. The also incorporate certified organic produce, certified organic minerals and unrefined vitamins to fortify their complete and balanced diets. All of the ingredients found in Primal Freeze-Dried Formulas are procured from ranches and farms throughout the United States and New Zealand that take pride in producing wholesome raw foods through natural, sustainable agriculture. That sounds good in my book!

Primal Pet Foods Freeze Dried-Chicken Formula Ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Necks, Chicken Gizzards, Organic Kale, Organic Carrots, Organic Yams, Chicken Livers, Organic Broccoli, Organic Apples, Cranberries, Blueberries, Organic Pumpkin Seeds, Organic Sunflower Seeds, Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Copper Carbonate, Selenium), Organic Parsley, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Salmon Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Quinoa Sprout Powder, Dried Organic Kelp, Alfalfa, Natural Vitamin E, Mixed Tocopherols (natural preservative).

Pros: Tasty, complete healthy raw diet, all ingredients sourced in the US or New Zealand, a variety of flavors/proteins to choose from, 20% organic foods used
Cons: Can’t think of any.

So what do I think of Primal Pet Foods Freeze Dried-Chicken Formula? Oh, my gosh, do you really have to ask? A WIN!!
Thank you so much, Primal Pet Foods Inc., for sending me this great food
