Determining and Comparing The Cost of Pet Insurance
People often ask me if they should get insurance for their pets. After I say, “Yes” the questions continue. What is the best pet insurance company? Should I buy pet insurance for my puppy? What about pet insurance for multiple dogs? What is the cost of pet insurance? Is pet insurance worth it?
- hereditary and congenital conditions
- veterinary exam fees
- diagnostic treatments
- surgery
- medications
- imaging
- cancer treatments
- rehab
- alternative treatments
- specialists
After ensuring the pet insurance company offered these things, then I needed to find out their limits for each condition and the deductible and the monthly premium. I ended up with Petplan USA (Now Fetch® Pet Insurance) and I have been more than satisfied. UPDATE 2024 NOT SATISFIED READ WHY We have the Bronze plan and pay about $35/month. Paperwork is a breeze and customer support is amazing and they always return my inquiries (I email) that day. Update: 5 years later, we are just over $50/month.
Some other US Pet Insurers include Petplan USA, Healthy Paws pet insurance, Embrace pet insurance, ASPCA pet insurance, Banfield pet insurance, Nationwide pet insurance, AKC pet insurance, Trupanion, Pets Best, VPI, Petfirst Healthcare….so you can see there is a big list to wade through. I suggest taking your time and reading the benefits carefully and the limits.

Hi Tanya, thanks for the information
I have been thinking about switching to Petplan so glad to here a good report.
I purchased Nationwide when Snickers was a pup because they had the added wellness plan. And they are easy to file claims prompt and good customer service. The wellness plan covered a good deal of his neuter, puppy shots, exams etc.
However, since Snickers diagnosis of SM, I found out they do not cover this ?. I know he will now not be covered under any insurance plan for this but my concern is that if he gets any other CKCS genetic disorders that Nationwide will not cover so so I need to switch plans now!
Thanks, Rosemarie. Yes, we have been very happy with the additional treatments Petplan allows. We do rehab, laser, acupuncture, quarterly bloodwork, and all this has been covered. The bloodwork is 100%, the others are 80% because it’s considered a specialist, not my regular vet. <3
We use PetPlan and love their service. They even covered our $3,500 vet bill for a Neuro visit and MRI with no questions asked.
Thanks, B. We love PetPlan too. Dexter’s coverage has been amazing and also covered his MRI and ongoing rehab treatments.
