Parents struggling to find ways to help their children overcome obstacles, bullies, disabilities are about to be introduced to a lovely book series, Dexter the Dog and Friends, launching in the summer of 2020.

Tonya Wilhelm, a professional dog trainer based in Ohio, has teamed up with renowned artist Wendy Beugels based in Portugal. Together they are launching a children’s book. They hope, through the love of the charming, funny, and open-hearted dogs in the series, children will learn how to accept people of all abilities and to be kinder to one another. Tonya and Wendy’s dream is that through the Dexter The Dog and Friends book series, parents and teachers will be able to use the books as tools to help teach valuable lessons.

The main character, Dexter, is a stoic Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a neurological and mobility disability. Dexter The Dog and Friends follows Dexter through various stories and travels focusing on difficult topics such as disabilities, adoption, bullies, and death.

The books’ tone is uplifting and inspiring, promoting acceptance, friendship, and living life to the fullest. Wendy’s illustrations brings vibrancy and fun to the characters with her whimsical style and creativity. Both children and adults are falling in love with the characters through the books’ kid-friendly social media accounts.

This easy-reader series will surely charm audiences of all ages and will open a door for parents to discuss difficult topics with their children. The fun stories and delightful characters will charm readers from start to finish, leaving them enthusiastically waiting for the next addition.

Tonya Wilhelm is a dog training specialist who has a passion for educating children about dogs. Tonya and Dexter have provided years of therapy dog visits in classrooms, auditoriums, and pet expos. She started her dog training career in 1998 as a service dog trainer. Miss Wilhelm always gravitated towards the youngest student in the service dog training class. Named one of the top ten dog trainers in the US twice, she has helped thousands of people of all ages build happy relationships with their dogs through humane, positive training methods.   2. I can’t wait for the release of this whimsical series. As a lover of books (especially children’s picture books), and a tutor for students who have dyslexia, I am sure to use these books to spark their interest & motivate them to practice their reading regularly. Knowing Tonya & Dexter, & having a Cavalier that shares his neurological disability, I am hopeful that this series will bring comfort to children of all ages & provide examples of relatable scenarios. If ever Dexter attends a support group for SM/CM Or deafness ( I myself am hearing impaired & must wear aids), my Pippa will gladly lend herself as a member of the group. . ??
