4-Legger Organic Dog Shampoo Review

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

I’m often asked how often to give a dog a bath. The answer is that your dog should have a bath as often as necessary. If he’s a dirty dog, dog bathing may be every two weeks. Dexter gets a dog bath about every 2-4 weeks, depending on his activities.

It’s important to use the best dog shampoo when you are bathing your dog. Unfortunately, claims on dog shampoos, such as ‘natural dog shampoo,’ or ‘without xyz ingredient,’ sometimes can be misleading. The front of your natural dog shampoo means nothing—it’s the entire ingredient panel that you must read and understand.

Six months ago I reviewed 4-Legger’s Conditioning Shampoo and fell in love with it. Today, I’m going to talk about their Unscented and Hypoallergenic Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Aloe.

4-Legger’s unscented hypoallergenic organic dog shampoo is geared toward dogs with very sensitive skin or sensitivity to aromas. The ultra-gentle dog shampoo cleans and moisturizes with organic oils and soothing aloe vera, without stripping the natural oils from your dog’s coat.

But wait, there’s more! This isn’t your typical all-natural shampoo for itchy skin or allergies—it’s much more than that. This organic dog shampoo can be customized with your own high quality, certified organic essential oil blends! This is perfect for those dog parents, working with a holistic veterinarian on a medical issue or skin condition, who can use a little extra help in the grooming department. Just tell your veterinarian and they can advise you on what essential oils to add to your blend.

Custom Dog Shampoo Blends

It’s important to note that essential oils can be very helpful, but they are also very potent. Dogs are not small humans, and should not be treated the same. Some common essential oils you may see in pet products that I personally avoid are anise, clove, oregano, red or white thyme, and wintergreen. Keep in mind that every dog is different and some may have dermatitis as a result of using essential oils. Do a small patch test before you bathe your dog in your custom dog shampoo to make sure he’s not sensitive to it.

A few pointers in selecting and formulating your custom dog shampoo.

  • Use high-quality, certified organic essential oils
  • No more than 6 drops of essential oils per ounce
  • Mix up 2-ounce containers to ensure you enjoy the blend

Before I go into two blends I made for Dexter, I wanted to provide you with the ingredients inside the 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo. This is something I feel is an important part of my pet product reviews, so I always like to provide the entire ingredient panel for you. Ingredients: Saponified organic oils of coconut, olive, and jojoba, organic aloe vera, and rosemary extract (preservative). That’s it. All safe and healthy ingredients that I feel totally comfortable using on Dexter as often as he needs a dog bath.

Natural Tick Shampoo Blend

  • 2 ounces 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo
  • 3 drops Cedarwood (Atlas Cedar), Cedrus atlantica
  • 3 drops Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens
  • 3 drops Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus
  • 3 drops Myrrh, Commiphora myrrha

Immune Booster Shampoo Blend

When bathing your dog, ensure that you fully wet your dog down from head to tail (learn how to give a dog a bath here). Shake your custom organic dog shampoo and apply to the palm of your hand and rub throughout your dog’s coat. Because 4-Legger doesn’t use chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate (a chemical to produce foam and lather), you will notice the consistency is thinner than you may expect. But don’t worry—you still need to use only a small amount, just add more water to increase suds. If you find you really miss the foam, 4-Legger offers a Foamer Bottle which has a special pump that infuses air into the liquid shampoo as it is pumped from the bottle.

After Dexter fully dried and I brushed him out, I was once again pleased with the results. Dexter’s white was white, and his reds were red. He was smooth and silky, and had a fresh, clean scent.

I am very pleased with the way 4-Legger Conditioning Shampoo performed during bathing, rinsing, and brushing. But most importantly, I’m confident in their high-quality ingredients. I know it’s a safe and natural shampoo I can use regularly on Dexter. I’m thrilled with the ability to add my own certified organic essential oils to make a custom blend for Dexter.

  1. We don’t have a dog anymore and when (and if) we get another one, I will keep this in mind. It sounds like a wonderful shampoo.

  2. How nice, I’m so glad there’s something like this for dogs. I only have cats, and I don’t bathe them at all or else they’d claw up my arm.

  3. Great Post! I love the shampoo. I would definitely get this for my poodle and use it for his bath. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I’ve never heard of this type of dog shampoo. This is some great information.

  5. This sounds like an awesome product! Can’t wait to try it on our dog (who takes a bath every week or so, when we catch him haha).

  6. I really want a pug and when and if I get the pug I will be sure to use this shampoo especially because it is hypoallergenic shampoo. It sounds fantastic x

  7. Unfortunately it seems like more and more dogs are starting to suffer from allergies. It’s great that there are brands out there to help them out!

  8. I don’t have a dog but I understand how important t is to make sure your dog is well groomed and kept cleaning using good products that are safe too.

  9. When I lived with my ex and our puppy, I gave him his first bath at 6 months old (my ex only had a shower, so a bath was difficult with a big black boisterous lab puppy!). The water ran black for the first 5 minutes of the shower, he was that filthy! After that I bathed him a lot more regularly 🙂 he didn’t have any allergies or skin conditions, but he did like to roll around in the mud A LOT x

  10. What a great post. We try to use natural products with out pets and to feed them quality food. I will check these out.

  11. We usually give the dog a bath about twice per month. However, the shampoos we buy over the counter never smell as good as when we take him into the salon!

  12. The shampoo looks great and the doggy is adorable. I don’t have a dog yet but am planning to get a puppy soon. Thanks for sharing.

  13. These sound like really great products for dogs. I guess it doesn’t really matter if they have allergies, it must be much better for them.

  14. I’ve always struggled to find a good natural shampoo for my dog. So will definitely be checking out this brand. She doesn’t have any negative effects when I use the generic brands but I’ve heard that it’s important to find a good one suitable for her. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one.

  15. i don’t have a dog anymore but i know picking the right shampoo is very important. and this sounds like an amazing product for them. Will tell my friends about it

  16. i will have to take a look into this. I know that I need to get a new shampoo for my dog. And his skin is really sensitive. Thanks for the great review.

  17. I didn’t know that there \re essential oils that are not good for dogs. We will be getting a dog to add in our family this year. I will keep in mind these tips you got here. Thank you for sharing.

  18. With two (white) golden retrievers who like to roll in the mud and bury bones in the backyard .. I swear they’re always in the bath. I’m so glad to read your recommendation because I stand at Petco amongst the sea of products and think “is one really better?” I’m definitely going to give these a try. I like too that you’re able to customize them as well

  19. Thanks for letting me know about this hypoallergenic and natural dog shampoo. My fur baby sometimes scratches himself crazy! I love that this product line will help with the itchiness and also to protect him from ticks and fleas.

  20. Seems great products! I have 3 dogs and I have to absolutely check this brand, looks great!

  21. Our furry bestfriend deserves out love and care and they also deserves all the best.

  22. I don’t have any dogs or pets but am gonna recommend this to my friends who have pets 🙂

  23. Great review and thanks for such helpful information. I only use hypo allergenic shampoo on the dogs, especially on Jack because has very itchy skin. Organic is definitely a bonus, and if the product doesn’t test on animals, I’m all over it!!

  24. This time of year and in the the fall, Edie gets bathed more frequently – usually every 2 weeks, to help eliminate the “itchies” that are caused by the environment such as fresh cut grass and the mouldy leaves in the fall. I have been fortunate to have found a shampoo and conditioner that work well on her, but am always on the look out for new products. Thanks for binging this to my attention!

  25. A good dog shampoo is definitely important, you don’t just pick something off the shelf. You need to read and check if it’s something that your dog can benefit from. I think it’s nice that this is unscented and hypoallergenic as well.

  26. This is too adorable. I’ve been doing my research because the children have been requesting a puppy. I’m glad a came across this blog

  27. Yes! We have had several allergy and skin issues within the pact, but thankfully nothing too bad. We’re adding fish oil and other supplements to help.

  28. I seriously LOVE that there are only 5 ingredients in this shampoo. That’s amazing! I’m interested in the Tick and Immune Booster blends that you made. Does the kit come with instructions on which essential oils to add and what purpose they serve, or is this just something that you know from working with essential oils in the past?

  29. I am beyond excited to learn about this product and the fact that I can make a blend for each of my unique dogs!
    Thank you for sharing.

  30. I don’t have a dog at the moment but this is definitely a product I’d keep in mind. How cute is your dog!

  31. I’m a big fan of anything organic or natural without harsh chemicals for pets (and ourselves). Thanks for sharing this option with pet parents. Good information and alternative options to have.

  32. 4-legger sounds a great shampoo for dogs. I love that you can add essential oils to customise it to each pups needs too.

  33. This shampoo sounds great and how cute is your dog!! I’ll have to forward on this review to my dog owning friends

  34. This sounds like a great shampoo! I love that it uses essential oils that can be customized. I have gotten into essential oils recently myself and have been loving them! Unfortunately they are toxic for kitties though, which is a shame. I would love to be able to use products like this for them!

  35. This looks like a good brand of shampoo. Reasonably priced? Rufus has dry skin issues so he needs something gentle for sure.

  36. Ruby definitely has some skin issues and immune system issues. I am very intrigued by your immune system booster and may just give it a try. Thanks for the review!

  37. This is a great find. My Puggle suffers from the itches something fierce & breaks out from other shampoos. Thanks for including the ingredients, it sealed the deal with me.

  38. This is pretty cool to be able to customize your dog’s shampoo with essential oils! I bathe Phoebe every 3-4 weeks usually. Icy gats bathed less frequently, mainly because she’s too big for me to do it myself so she goes to the groomer.

  39. This might be great for my Maltese. She suffers from allergies and sometimes in the summer has very itchy skin. The vet thinks some of her allergies are seasonal, so she recommends that Nelly gets extra baths in the summer.

  40. We are always on the lookout for something that is good for a dog’s skin and is safe to use. So many shampoos have the nasties in them. Your Dexter looks great and I am glad you spotlighted this line: I had never heard of it!

  41. Your dog is just the sweetest thing!! <3 So cute. We don't have a dog yet but plan to adopt one in future. This is great information, thank you for sharing!

  42. We don’t have dogs but this is a informative post for the pet owners, I love this post
