I am being compensated to help share information about Icelandic+™ and their all-natural dog chews and treats, but Raising Your Pets Naturally only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Icelandic+™ is not responsible for the content of this article.

Dexter The Dog was a happy camper today. When it comes to testing and reviewing holistic and natural pet products, Dexter would like to skip the natural dog grooming reviews and head straight to the all-natural dog treats! Today was his day.

When Icelandic+™ asked me to review their all-natural fish dog treats, I first had to be sure it was a product that met my personal criteria for my pets. With all of the products I use or feed my furry kids, the very first thing I do is read the entire ingredient label. It’s always important to me to know exactly what’s inside a pet product, not just what’s on the front of the fancy packaging, but everything.

Icelandic+ Capelin Ingredients: Icelandic Capelin Whole Fish

Yes, that’s it. Just whole Capelin fish from the pure waters of Iceland. Icelandic+ dog treats and chews are manufactured within FDA, USDA, EU, and MAST standards and regulations, to ensure the freshness, purity, and integrity. I happily agreed to review Icelandic+ Capelin Whole Fish.

When our bag of Capelin treats arrived, I actually did not have time to test them right away, so I placed them in my closet. Dexter, on the other hand, was more than eager to get to work. For three days, he kept going to my closet door and sitting there, looking at me. When I opened the door to get my clothes for the day, he would dart inside, looking up at the bag of Icelandic Fish Dog Treats in anticipation.

Pure. Natural. Unspoiled.

Finally, it was time to try Icelandic+ all natural dog treats. These whole fish dog treats are pretty impressive in size, ranging from about five to six inches long. My first thought was how Dexter would handle the size. Would he chew the fish or try to swallow it whole? To ensure safety and to see how Dexter consumed the treat, I held the end as I gave it to him to chew.

Dexter’s eyes bugged out with delight as he carefully chewed the Capelin fish. I was happy with the way Dexter chewed, so provided him with a second fish treat to eat on his own. Once again, he chewed it up bit by bit.

Chew. Chew. Chew.

If you have a small dog or a gobbler, I would recommend this process to ensure chewing safety. If it’s a concern, you can easily break the natural fish up into three or four bite-sized pieces.

Since Dexter was so impressed with the Capelin fish, I decided Nutter The Cat and Delilah would also enjoy this healthy fish cat treats. First up was Nutter. I watched as Nutter sniffed the treat and quickly started to lick the fish. Within seconds, he was chomping on the fish and taking off bits to eat. I allowed him to eat half of the fish, then I went to Delilah.

Unlike Nutter, Delilah is a bit shy, so she wondered why I was there watching her. But the fresh aroma of the natural fish took over and she, too, started to lick the fish. Unlike Nutter, she quickly swallowed her part whole, and before I could even get up, she puked it back up. This shows me again how important it is to supervise pets who are eating new things to ensure they manage a product as expected. I will reintroduce the treat to both cats, but in bite-sized portions.

Amazing facts about Icelandic+ Capelin Whole Fish

Did you know that people living in Iceland live longer on average than people in many other countries? Maybe it’s because of their organic approach to farming and fishing, and their focus on sustainable living. Iceland is one of the cleanest fishing grounds in the North Atlantic. Iceland’s coastal waters have strict rules and regulations to ensure purity. Pure. Natural. Unspoiled.

Icelandic+ Capelin are not only a single-ingredient, but they are also line-caught fresh daily in Iceland. Everything that goes into Icelandic+ healthy dog treats are ethically sourced from Iceland. They are never bruised or damaged from nets. Each Capelin is immediately air-dried and are manufactured within FDA, USDA, EU, and MAST standards and regulations, to ensure the freshness, purity, and integrity. I love the way Icelandic+ Capelin Whole Fish are pure, clean and a natural, high-quality dog treats.

Capelin are small, oily fish that are a great source of protein, minerals, Omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium. Providing whole fish to your dog or cat is a much healthier way to supply Omega-3 fatty acids than processed fish oils. Smaller fish like Capelin also contain fewer toxins than do larger fish. Icelandic+™ fish dog treats are available in four different flavors and varieties.: Capelin whole fish, Cod fish chips, Cod fish skin rolls and Redfish skin rolls. Each flavor and variety is 100% pure fish treats for dogs, from the cold waters of Iceland.

Icelandic+ Capelin Whole Fish are not just healthy dog treats, but also can be used to balance a fresh dog food diet. I provide Dexter a balanced, home-cooked diet. While balancing his diet, I often rotate in small, oily fish to help meet his nutritional and fat needs. I am happy to know I have another healthy fish option to include in Dexter’s rotation.

I am totally impressed with the quality of Icelandic+ ingredients and sourcing of their Capelin Whole Fish treats. They were a big hit with all of my pets. If you are looking for all natural dog treats, I can highly recommend these natural fish from Icelandic+™. It’s a huge bonus for me that I can incorporate this healthy dog treat into Dexter’s food preparation. But don’t take my word for it—give them a try for yourself.

Give your dog the gift of PURE. NATURAL. UNSPOILED. Icelandic+ chews and treats.

As a professional pet behavior counselor, I see a lot of scared dogs and fearful cats. It’s sad, really. I, too, have been in this boat with my golden retriever, Theo. He suffered from dog separation anxiety and he was scared of thunder and storms. It can be really tough emotionally on the human and furry family. Luckily, dog and cat anxiety treatment is available.

I take a multi-pronged approach with each pet, whether I’m working with a client or my own pets. There are five main pillars that I address with my clients.

  1. Veterinary Health Check
  2. Management
  3. Behavior Modification
  4. Food Therapy
  5. Natural Calming Aids

Within the natural calming aids pillar, some of the remedies we look at can include aromatherapy, homeopathic remedies, various massage techniques, acupuncture, flower essences, calming wraps, vitamins, or calming music.

Today, I will discuss one of the products I recommend to clients and use with my own pets, Pet Remedy. Pet Remedy is a special blend of various essential oils used to help relax and calm an anxious or stressed pet.

Pet Remedy
  • Valerian (Valeriana officinalis): Valerian is an herb commonly used for sleep disorders and restlessness. This herb helps to calm the nervous system and acts as a mild sedative, without decreasing reaction time. Approximately 5% of people respond to Valerian with hyperactivity. This herb has a distinct ‘musk-like’ smell.
  • Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides): Vetiver is commonly used in calming blends offering a centering and grounding effect. A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Plants Studies states that Vetiver has a soothing effect and can help someone recover from a severe strain, shock, fear, or panic.
  • Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilcum): Basil oil is a good tonic for treating nervous disorders and stress-related headaches, migraines, and allergies. It is helpful for restoring the mind’s focus and clarity.
  • Spanish Sage (Salvia lavandulaefolia): Spanish Sage offers a general relaxant effect. The herb can be used to help with nervousness and excitability.

If you have read any of my reviews in the past, you know I don’t just stop with the helpful ingredients in a product. I provide the entire ingredient panel for your review.

  • Pet Remedy Spray Ingredients:  valerian oil, vetiver oil, basil oil, sage oil and water (pH neutral)
  • Pet Remedy Diffuser Ingredients:  valerian oil, vetiver oil, basil oil, sage oil, inert carrier oil (Augeo) and water (pH neutral)

But does Pet Remedy work with scared dogs or fearful cats?

As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I have been using Pet Remedy with success for my own pets for quite some time. I first started using Pet Remedy with our family’s new rescue kitty, Delilah, about 3 years ago. Currently, I use Pet Remedy with Dexter.

Delilah’s story and experience: Delilah was rescued from a local cat shelter as a kitten. She came into our home very stressed and lacking any confidence. We started to use Pet Remedy by spraying her bedding and a few toys that were around the house. Delilah would always gravitate to the items that were sprayed. Whenever she lay next to the bed or the toys, it seemed to help her come out into the main part of the home. We did also add confidence-boosting flower essences to her daily routine, along with play therapy.

Now, she’s been part of the family for three years and still is not totally confident, but she is no longer fearful or stressed. Whenever we have a home event that is a bit stressful for her (family gatherings, home improvements, etc.), we spray her bedding with Pet Remedy.

Dexter’s story and experience: Dexter has no fear. He is one of the most confident dogs I know, and his fearless personality is a true blessing. However, he does have a neurological condition, and on days that his disease is a bit more painful, he scratches his head a bit obsessively because of discomfort. He also has seasonal allergies, and some days he just wants to dig at his feet.

These are the times that I use our Pet Remedy spray. I spray my hands and do a once-over rub around Dexter’s head and neck. He quickly settles down and relaxes—no more scratching or digging. The calming effects of the essential oils help to soothe and ease Dexter’s mind.

Pet Remedy Diffuser

I’m definitely a fan of the Pet Remedy spray. They also have a calming plug-in diffuser. The diffuser works in a 650 square foot room, and lasts about 8 weeks. If Delilah still had ongoing anxiety, I would definitely consider using the diffuser in her bedroom. When I started using this product, I was unaware of the diffuser.

I will continue to use it for my own pets and will continue to recommend the product to my clients working with pet anxiety. If you have a pet with anxiety, I urge you to seek professional help to learn how to help your pet cope and build up confidence. You can safely add Pet Remedy to your training program with confidence.

When is the best time to spay or neuter a pet?

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

Have you ever wondered when the right time is to spay or neuter a dog? There is no doubt that overpopulation is a huge issue here in the United States, but is it healthier for your dog to spay or neuter early, or is it more beneficial for your dog to wait until he or she has reached social maturity, typically one to two years of age? Today, I wanted to touch on some of the pros and cons of early spaying and neutering. A little food for thought for a later discussion.

Pros for Neutering or Spaying a Dog

  • Controls unwanted litters
  • Females won’t go into heat
  • Prevents most reproductive organ disease
  • Helps prevent male wandering

Cons for Neutering or Spaying a Dog Prior to Maturity

  • Higher risk of hip dysplasia
  • Higher risk of cranial cruciate ligament tear
  • Higher risk of lymphosarcoma
  • Higher risk of mast cell tumors
  • Higher risk of bone cancer
  • Higher risk of incontinence
  • Higher risk of cystitis, i.e. bladder inflammation

When is the Best Time to Spay or Neuter a Dog?

Asking when is the best time to spay or neuter a dog is not as simple as it may appear. This is also a decision you should not take lightly—due diligence, research and knowing your specific dog are key. There are also other non-traditional ways to sterilize a pet without desexing. Speak with your veterinarian before making your final decision.

If you decide to wait until your dog has reached full maturity, responsible dog parents must ensure your dog does not wander and your female does not have an unintentional pregnancy. If you have a female dog, our friends at PABS Delay Her Spay have a unique product to help ensure a female dog in heat does not get pregnant!

Delay Her Spay Harness

Delay Her Spay pet-breeding prevention harness is a unique natural dog harness that covers the girl parts, preventing any male from gaining entry. 😉 As a bonus, the Delay Her Spay harness also comes with its own Sani-T Pad™, which acts in the same way as a human sanitary pad. These pads are washable and reusable. And don’t worry—the harness still allows your dog to urinate and defecate while wearing the system.

Yes, I tried it out on my dad’s dog, Vanessa. Although Vanessa is an eleven-year-old spayed female, she agreed to be my model and guinea pig. The first thing I noticed about the Delay Her Spay harness was the cute black-and-white gingham print and soft, flexible straps.

The harness offers an eight-point buckle system, which is adjustable to ensure a comfortable fit. I have to admit, my eyes bugged out a bit when I saw all the buckles. But luckily, it came with an easy-to-follow instruction sheet, so it really wasn’t that difficult once I got rolling.

Covers private parts

After I fitted Vanessa, she sort of just looked at me, like “now what?” My dad encouraged her to walk around for treats, and once she realized she could move, she moved easily in her normal gait. She even ran barking to the door when a neighbor came over! Lol

The Delay Her Spay harness comes in five sizes, for dogs from 8-120 pounds. It is also highly recommended not to leave your female and male together unsupervised.

Delay Her Spay is an innovative, safe, and natural solution to keep a female dog from getting pregnant. The Sani-T Pad™ also keeps your home clean when your dog is in heat. By using this harness system, you may safely wait to spay your dog when the time is right, allowing you to spay your dog when it’s best for her health, not just your convenience. If you are anything like me, you are always trying to find the best pet products, natural dog grooming supplies, and the healthiest dog food brand for your favorite canine. But the reality is, there is not a “one size fits all” answer to what is “best.” Every dog needs a diet that is specific to his health, behavior, and lifestyle. Personally, I’m a huge believer in frequent rotation of healthy, homemade dog food, raw dog food, and holistic pet pre-mixes. I never feed dry dog food or dry cat food. Dry pet food is heavily processed at high heat, removing all the moisture and goodness of the food. A balanced homemade dog food or raw pet food is the only way to provide a fresh, healthy diet.

If you have visited Raising Your Pets Naturally in the past, you probably know that I home-cook for Dexter almost exclusively. However, I do occasionally recommend and use great dog food brands, especially when traveling. Dr. Harvey’s Paradigm Superfood Pre-Mix filled this need when Dexter and I traveled to Minnesota for a week. Instead of traveling with a week’s worth of frozen dog food, I brought Dr. Harvey’s dehydrated pre-mix with me, and purchased organic beef upon my arrival.

REAL FOOD

Before I go into how easy it is to make this healthy dog food, I want to discuss all the health benefits of Paradigm and why I choose Dr. Harvey’s for Dexter. As you know, I’m very particular in what I feed Dexter, and I do not cut any corners when it comes to his health.

The formula contains powerful ingredients, each of which has been chosen to provide vital nutrition for health and healing. Paradigm is a grain-free dog food mix that provides a holistic blend of nutritious dehydrated vegetables and powerful healing herbs that improve health and act as natural blood purifiers. Inside, you will find bone broth; herbs such as turmeric, spirulina, ginger, red clover, milk thistle, slippery elm, dandelion and cinnamon; and absolutely no dyes, fillers, preservatives, wheat, corn or soy.

Dr. Harvey’s Paradigm is a pre-mix base for a nutritionally complete dog or cat food. This low-carbohydrate, low-glycemic pet food mix may be helpful for pets with a variety of health issues such as obesity, weakened immune system, diabetes, cancer, and neurological conditions. Paradigm is a blend of low-glycemic vegetables that digest slowly to prevent glucose level spikes combined with an abundance of powerful and nourishing antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that support all body systems and aid in healing. I felt this would be a great pre-mix, since Dexter suffers from a neurological condition and weakened immune system.

Dr. Harvey’s Paradigm

Paradigm is a ketogenic diet for dogs and cats. A ketogenic diet is low in carbohydrates. A low-carb formulation robs cancer cells of their sugar (glucose) energy supply, so instead of using carbs for energy, your pet will start to use stored fat for energy instead. A ketogenic diet can essentially starve cancer cells, decreases seizures, lowers blood sugar levels, burns fat, and increases mental focus. Holistic vets agree that a low-carb or ketogenic diet may be helpful in the management of canine cancer.

Paradigm Ingredients-Broccoli, Green Beans, Bone Broth, Red and Green Bell Pepper, Cabbage, Pumpkin, Celery, Kelp, Alfalfa, Turmeric, Spirulina, Ginger, Red Clover, Milk Thistle, Slippery Elm, Dandelion, Cinnamon, Tricalcium Phosphate, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Manganese Proteinate, Vitamin A Acetate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid

Watch how easy it is to make healthy dog food in your own kitchen!

Paradigm makes it easy and safe to prepare fresh meals in a matter of minutes, right in your own kitchen.

  1. Add hot water to Paradigm and let sit for approximately 8-10 minutes.
  2. Add your choice of quality protein, either lightly cooked or raw.
  3. Add your choice of healthy oil.
  4. Mix well and feed.
  5. Watch your dog or cat lap up their healthy, real food!

Dexter’s favorite part was diving into his bowl of Paradigm. Dexter is a foodie, and loves to eat healthy and tasty food. If there was such a thing as smell-a-blog, I would love it right about now. The Paradigm smelled amazing! The mix of healthy herbs made this healthy dog food a real treat for Dexter. He gobbled up each meal and licked the bowl so clean it almost looked unused!

Paradigm empowers you to take your dog’s health into your own hands by adding a quality protein and oil sources that you pick to meet your dog’s needs. It’s really easy to prepare a healthy, fresh dog food with Dr. Harvey’s Paradigm Superfood Pre-Mix. You can easily prepare a week’s worth of food, portion into daily servings, and freeze.

I’ve been a fan of Dr. Harvey’s for as long as I can remember. As a pioneer and the very first companion animal food producer in the ultra-natural and all-natural category of pet food, the team at Dr. Harvey’s has dedicated itself over the past three decades to a powerful vision: helping guardians give their companion animals a better, healthier, happier, longer, and more fulfilling life.

If you are looking for a quality pre-mix for your dog or cat, I can’t recommend Dr. Harvey’s Paradigm enough. Hop on over to Dr. Harvey’s website and see for yourself. Tell them Dexter The Dog sent you.

Darwin’s Raw Dog Food

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

From the beginning of my 20-year career in dog behavior, I have been asked, “What is the best dog food?” Over the years, my answer has remained the same: “It depends.” Truly, finding the best dog food for your dog depends on a lot of factors. Are you looking for the best dog food for skin allergies, homemade dog food recipes, raw dog food recipes, or a prepared holistic pet food?

When people ask me what the best dry dog food is, I basically cringe. I get it. I know some people are always going to feed a dry dog food, but I don’t think a dry pet food is the healthiest option for your dog and certainly not for your cat. Dry pet food is heavily processed at high heat, removing all the moisture and goodness from the food. Fresh food, whether from a balanced home-cooked diet, balanced home-prepared raw, raw pet food company, or home-cooked pet food company will always provide a fresher, healthier diet.

When people ask me for the best dog food, I assume they want to feed their dogs a species-appropriate, high-quality dog food. I personally look for several things when evaluating the quality of a dog food. In a good dog food, I’m looking for meat, meat, and more meat. I shoot for 70% or more meat in Dexter‘s diet. I look for meats free of antibiotics and hormones. The remaining portion of Dexter’s food can be healthy fruits and vegetables, and I’m not opposed to healthy grains or carbohydrates in small quantities. Ideally, I look for ingredients that are organic, human-grade, and sourced in a country with a good quality-control program.

Figuring out all the details when choosing a pet food brand can be time consuming, but Dexter is well worth the time. If you have visited Raising Your Pets Naturally in the past, you probably know that I home-cook for Dexter almost exclusively. However, I do occasionally recommend and use great dog food brands, especially when traveling. Darwin’s Pet Products is one of those brands.

Natural raw diet dog food

I’m a big fan of a raw-food dog diet. However, it’s not for every person, and it’s not for every dog. Dexter is one of these dogs. With Dexter’s neurological condition and weakened immune system, he does not tolerate a fresh raw diet very well; he tends to get the scoots. However, Darwin’s raw dog food can be gently cooked “rare” (i.e., cooking the meat, but not the ground bones). This is what I do when feeding Darwin’s to Dexter, and he does great, with no digestion issues.

Gently Cooked Dog Food

Does Dexter like Darwin’s Natural Pet Products? Seriously? You have to ask? Dexter is a huge fan. He gobbles up every last morsel and looks at me for seconds. The question should be whether or not I like a particular pet food brand. I have been a fan of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products for a few years, and even rotate their cat food into Nutter The Cat‘s diet.

Gobbled every last bit

Darwin’s raw dog food is 75% meat, 25% vegetables, and under 1% trace minerals and vitamins. No guesswork on how much meat your dog is getting. And it’s not low-quality meat that you might find in a rendering plant or low-quality pet food manufacturing facility. Darwin’s offers two dog food lines: Natural Selections and ZooLogics. Their Natural Selections line contains high-quality, antibiotic- and hormone-free meats from New Zealand, Australia, and the USA, with organic vegetables. Their ZooLogics line is a more economical line of raw dog food, made with conventionally-grown meats and vegetables from the same farms that supply your supermarket.

Currently, Darwin’s offers raw dog food made with chicken, duck, turkey, beef, or lamb. Darwin’s eliminates the middle-man by shipping directly to the customer. They even include a pre-paid return label so you can return the special insulated shipping container back to Darwin’s. If you live in the Seattle and Portland Metropolitan Areas, you receive free home delivery!

Darwin’s raw dog food is super simple to feed. Each 8-ounce frozen, vacuum-sealed bag has an EZ Peel tab in the corner, making it a breeze to open without a mess. They also provide a nice container with a lid to store any unused food. Frozen food can last at least six months when kept frozen. Once defrosted, keep the raw pet food in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Darwin’s Natural Pet Products

The first step in our transition was to thaw two packages of the raw Natural Selections turkey. This was easy—I just placed a block in the handy container provided, and popped it into the refrigerator for the day. The next day, I gently cooked Dexter’s food and allowed it to cool. Because Dexter is used to a variety of foods, I was able to quickly transition him to test out Darwin’s gently cooked dog food. I started with a 50/50 mix of his current food and Darwin’s. By day two, Dexter was happily eating Darwin’s raw turkey, but gently cooked. He was a happy camper!

Darwin’s Raw Turkey Dog Food Ingredients: Free-Range Meat (76.90%): Turkey Necks (including bone), Turkey Thigh Meat, Turkey Livers, Turkey Hearts, and Turkey Gizzards. Organic Vegetables (22.34%): Romaine Lettuce, Yams, Zucchini, Carrots, Yellow Squash, Celery, and Parsley (vegetables may vary based on seasonality). I spend a lot of time researching the best natural pet products, including looking for the best pet food for my dog and cat. There is no single answer to the age-old question, “What is the best cat food?” However, there are a few key components that you can use to evaluate when you are looking for the best cat food brands.

First and foremost, cats are obligate carnivores. Obligate carnivores are animals that must eat meat in order to thrive. The main source of their nutrients should come from meat—they can eat a small portion of healthy fruits and vegetables, but meat should be the main ingredient. I think if you are reading this post on the best food for a cat, you are hoping to feed your feline a species-appropriate diet so that he may thrive, not just survive.

Real Meat!

If you have visited Raising Your Pets Naturally previously, you probably already know that I believe in a fresh and antibiotic- and hormone-free diet for my pets. Nutter The Cat eats a variety of healthy and natural cat foods, including a home-cooked cat food, high-quality canned cat food, and a freeze-dried raw cat food. I also believe in regularly rotating my pet’s meals to ensure they receive a variety of foods and nutrients. As long as their food fits into my personal quality control, I feel comfortable feeding new brands and flavors.

I’ve been a Darwin’s Pet Products fan for a few years now. The reasons are pretty clear once you dive into the company and their product lines. So, let’s get to it!

When I’m feeding my pets, I look for quality ingredients first. In the case of looking for a raw cat food, I want meat, meat, and more meat! Okay, the same goes when I’m feeding Dexter The Dog. Darwin’s raw cat food is a 98% meat, 2% trace minerals, vitamins, and marine oils. No guesswork on how much meat your cat is getting. And it’s not low-quality meat that you might find in a rendering plant or low-quality pet food manufacturing facility; it’s high-quality, antibiotic- and hormone-free meats from the United States. All of the ingredients used are USDA-certified, human-grade ingredients from the United States and Australia.

This IS the meat used at Darwin’s Pet Products

Currently, Darwin’s offers a raw chicken, duck, or turkey cat food. Darwin’s ships directly to the customer, eliminating the middleman. They even include a pre-paid return label so you can return the special insulated shipping container back to Darwin’s. If you live in the Seattle and Portland Metropolitan Areas, you receive free home delivery!

Darwin’s raw cat food is super simple to feed.

Natural Raw Cat Food

The first step in our transition was to thaw a package of the raw duck cat food. This was easy—I just placed a block in the handy container provided, and popped it into the refrigerator for the day. The next morning, it was thawed and ready to go. Because Nutter is used to a variety of foods, I was able to quickly transition him to test out Darwin’s raw cat food. I started with a 50/50 mix of his current food and Darwin’s. He’s usually pretty easy to adjust, and this was once again the case. I do recommend feeding all foods at room or body temperature to help in digestion.

By day three, Nutter was happily eating his Darwin’s raw cat food 100% and licking the bowl clean. Obviously, cleaning your pet’s food dish after each meal is recommended to ensure cleanliness.

I will always try to offer my readers great product selections. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

As a pet mom focused on raising my pets naturally, I think about every product my pets contact. Toxins add up. What may start out as a small concern, adding that to other “small concerns” or multiplying by daily use can run quickly into problems and toxicity.

When someone asks me what is the best cat litter, I have to say there is no ‘one size fits all.’ Is there ever? People often look for the best clumping cat litter, best cat litter for odor control, or even the best cat litter for multiple cats. Sure, these are all very helpful qualities in a good cat litter, but my first go-to is to look for the best natural cat litter. A cat litter that is safe for my cats.

When I saw that one of the Chewy Influencer selections was okocat litter from Healthy Pet, I was excited to review their pine cat litter. Oko is the German word for ecological, meaning green or organic, and okocat litter is made from 100% natural wood or paper fiber.

okocat Pine Litter

Personally, I’m not a fan of clay cat litter. Clay contains silica, which can cause lung disease and lung cancer. Clay is also a known carcinogen when inhaled. Think about all that dust (silica) that you and your cat are inhaling daily as he digs in his litter and you pour and scoop it. Clay also does not biodegrade, so it’s adding to the landfills.

okocat’s natural pine cat litter, on the other hand, is naturally biodegradable. This cat litter is also dust-free and flushable, but I do not recommend flushing any cat litter down the toilet. The natural wood fiber binds and traps liquids and odors so they can’t escape. This is so important in our home. Sometimes other natural cat litters I have used smell like a barn. I’d still rather have a barn smell than toxins, but okocat litter does not have that barnyard smell.

Natural pine litter for cats

okocat natural wood pine cat litter is natural and does not smell like a barnyard, but does it work? A big yes for us! Nutter has HUGE pees. Maybe it’s the biologically appropriate cat food he receives, I don’t know. But okocat stood up to the challenge. I used one box in Nutter’s cat litter box and the bottom of the box was dry, which hasn’t always been the case with some cat litter. This natural cat litter does a great job of absorbing the urine and odor.

If you are looking for a natural cat litter that offers great odor control, is dust-free, and good for multiple cats, check out okocat from Healthy Pet. Hop over to Chewy for 1-2 day free shipping on orders over $49!

Treatibls CBD Oil Review

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

Pet anxiety has been part of my life for many, many years. I began my dog training career working in an animal shelter, and it just broke my heart to see all the dogs and cats suffering and stressed with their new situation. Little did I know at that time, helping dog and cat parents with their anxious pets would be the foundation of my career in the pet industry.

I’ve spent the last 20 years learning new ways to help my clients and their fearful dogs and cats. Whether I’m learning new behavior and training protocols, discovering how food can affect behavior, or researching new pet products for anxiety, easing a pet’s anxiety is always in the front of my mind.

CBD For Dogs, Cats and Pets

CBD for dogs, cats, and other pets has been receiving some good press. Various ongoing scientific and clinical studies are being conducted on the use of CBD for various medical and behavioral issues. Dr. Robert J Silver, a holistic veterinarian, wrote the book Cannabis For Pets, which discusses the many potential clinical applications for this herbal drug therapy.

Treatibles CBD Oil for Pets

I have been listening with open ears over the years, as other pet experts discuss CBD for pets, particularly how it can help scared dogs and cats. Over the last year, one brand came onto my radar, Treatibles. As luck would have it, they were at a pet blogging conference I attended last month, so I was able to speak with them in-depth about their CBD products for pets.

After our conversation, we decided I would review and try their CBD oil drops for pets. At the moment, I do not have a dog with anxiety, but I did have a client that was willing to try Treatible’s CBD oil drops with her dog, Sora.

I’ve been working with my client and Sora for two years. They are doing great! However, Sora is a fearful dog who has been working hard at overcoming his dog anxiety. He also gets worked up and rowdy quickly around various stimuli. I felt he would be a perfect candidate for Treatible’s CBD oil.

Sora

Unlike some anxiety medications or natural calming aids, the effects are pretty immediate, typically five minutes to an hour after the first dose. Treatibles are safe and non-toxic, and can be administered as needed, depending on the pet’s behavior. If a pet guardian does not see a difference within the hour, another dose can be given. During the first few times of providing CBD oil to your pet, observe him carefully to find the optimal dose. You cannot overdose on Treatible’s CBD oil.

Sora started taking his CBD oil two times a day. After day two, I asked how Sora was doing now that he was using Treatible’s CBD oil. His owner was thrilled with the results! She told me he was far calmer around his high-arousal triggers and a lot easier to redirect if he did get a bit focused. She also told me he was disengaging in caring about the triggers quicker.

She also said that his low-arousal triggers were almost nonexistent. He was even lying around during some mild stimuli, instead of being focused on what was going on and trying to decide if he should be concerned.

I asked her if he was lethargic or had less energy than usual, and she told me no. He seemed more relaxed and able to sleep when the time was appropriate, but was ready to play and engage with her easily.

CBD Oil for pain management

You may have noticed the title of this blog post also mentioned pain management. As some of you may already know, my dog Dexter suffers from Chiari-like malformation (CM) and syringomyelia (SM). His disease causes some days to be more painful than others. I’m a member of a few CM/SM groups where pain management is often discussed. In our discussions CBD oil often comes up as a recommendation for some dogs. It’s never 100% successful with each dog, but some find it useful in managing syringomyelia pain.

I’m happy to report that I have not had the chance to test this on Dexter, as he’s been pain-free for quite a while! But I do have it on the ready for the next time he has a painful day.

People may wonder why I choose to review the Treatible brand. Two words: manufacturing and testing. Treatibles are non-GMO, and the hemp used is grown in Colorado. Each batch goes through three levels of testing, and is third-party tested to boot. They test for heavy metals and contaminants in the cannabinoid materials, and cannabinoid levels in the raw material and in the final product. Test results can be found on their website.

Cats Too!

What’s next in my review? A read-through of the ingredient panel for my viewers. This part is always an important factor when choosing a pet product. What, exactly, are ALL the ingredients?

Treatibles CBD Oil Ingredients: Hemp seed oil, grape seed oil, Phytocannabinoid-rich oil

I’m definitely adding Treatible’s CBD oil to my toolbox of tricks. From my research and the results so far, I think this is a great product for pets with anxiety, particularly if they are active because of the anxiety. For example, separation anxiety, dogs afraid of storms, fear of fireworks, travel anxiety, etc. I’m also hopeful that it will help Dexter the next time he has a painful episode.

I truly want to thank the team at Treatibles for bringing such a great product to market, and for their integrity with their product’s manufacturing and ingredients. If you have a pet with anxiety or pain, I urge you to click and read more about Treatible’s CBD oil for pets.

4-Legger Organic Dog Shampoo Review

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored review. However, I will always offer my readers an unbiased and honest account of my experiences. Your trust is very appreciated, and never taken for granted. ~Tonya, Dexter and Nutter

I’m often asked how often to give a dog a bath. The answer is that your dog should have a bath as often as necessary. If he’s a dirty dog, dog bathing may be every two weeks. Dexter gets a dog bath about every 2-4 weeks, depending on his activities.

It’s important to use the best dog shampoo when you are bathing your dog. Unfortunately, claims on dog shampoos, such as ‘natural dog shampoo,’ or ‘without xyz ingredient,’ sometimes can be misleading. The front of your natural dog shampoo means nothing—it’s the entire ingredient panel that you must read and understand.

Six months ago I reviewed 4-Legger’s Conditioning Shampoo and fell in love with it. Today, I’m going to talk about their Unscented and Hypoallergenic Certified Organic Dog Shampoo with Aloe.

4-Legger’s unscented hypoallergenic organic dog shampoo is geared toward dogs with very sensitive skin or sensitivity to aromas. The ultra-gentle dog shampoo cleans and moisturizes with organic oils and soothing aloe vera, without stripping the natural oils from your dog’s coat.

But wait, there’s more! This isn’t your typical all-natural shampoo for itchy skin or allergies—it’s much more than that. This organic dog shampoo can be customized with your own high quality, certified organic essential oil blends! This is perfect for those dog parents, working with a holistic veterinarian on a medical issue or skin condition, who can use a little extra help in the grooming department. Just tell your veterinarian and they can advise you on what essential oils to add to your blend.

Natural dog shampoo to help with dog allergies. 4-Legger Organic Dog Shampoo Review.
Custom Dog Shampoo Blends

It’s important to note that essential oils can be very helpful, but they are also very potent. Dogs are not small humans, and should not be treated the same. Some common essential oils you may see in pet products that I personally avoid are anise, clove, oregano, red or white thyme, and wintergreen. Keep in mind that every dog is different and some may have dermatitis as a result of using essential oils. Do a small patch test before you bathe your dog in your custom dog shampoo to make sure he’s not sensitive to it.

A few pointers in selecting and formulating your custom dog shampoo.

  • Use high-quality, certified organic essential oils
  • No more than 6 drops of essential oils per ounce
  • Mix up 2-ounce containers to ensure you enjoy the blend

Before I go into two blends I made for Dexter, I wanted to provide you with the ingredients inside the 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo. This is something I feel is an important part of my pet product reviews, so I always like to provide the entire ingredient panel for you. Ingredients: Saponified organic oils of coconut, olive, and jojoba, organic aloe vera, and rosemary extract (preservative). That’s it. All safe and healthy ingredients that I feel totally comfortable using on Dexter as often as he needs a dog bath.

Best smelling organic dog shampoo for scratching. 4-Legger custom dog shampoo blends.

Natural Tick Shampoo Blend

  • 2 ounces 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo
  • 3 drops Cedarwood (Atlas Cedar), Cedrus atlantica
  • 3 drops Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens
  • 3 drops Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus
  • 3 drops Myrrh, Commiphora myrrha

Immune Booster Shampoo Blend

When bathing your dog, ensure that you fully wet your dog down from head to tail (learn how to give a dog a bath here). Shake your custom organic dog shampoo and apply to the palm of your hand and rub throughout your dog’s coat. Because 4-Legger doesn’t use chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate (a chemical to produce foam and lather), you will notice the consistency is thinner than you may expect. But don’t worry—you still need to use only a small amount, just add more water to increase suds. If you find you really miss the foam, 4-Legger offers a Foamer Bottle which has a special pump that infuses air into the liquid shampoo as it is pumped from the bottle.

After Dexter fully dried and I brushed him out, I was once again pleased with the results. Dexter’s white was white, and his reds were red. He was smooth and silky, and had a fresh, clean scent.

I am very pleased with the way 4-Legger Conditioning Shampoo performed during bathing, rinsing, and brushing. But most importantly, I’m confident in their high-quality ingredients. I know it’s a safe and natural shampoo I can use regularly on Dexter. I’m thrilled with the ability to add my own certified organic essential oils to make a custom blend for Dexter.

If you are looking for a natural dog shampoo, I highly recommend 4-Legger Unscented Hypoallergenic Organic Dog Shampoo. This is a great natural dog shampoo that you can feel comfortable using, and know it will do a great job getting your dog clean.

GingerLead Review

For those of you who are new to my blog, my dog, Dexter, has been battling with a pretty significant neurological condition (Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia). No worries—he’s actually doing pretty well and he leads a very full and happy life. 🙂

However, over the last year, I have noticed that Dexter has more back-end weakness, and even drags his back feet a bit. I have added a few things to his daily life to help improve his hind-end strength and to increase his conscious proprioception, being aware of his back feet. He’s doing really great with his new regimen.

I am a realist and I want to plan for Dexter’s future. There may be a time when Dexter needs a little more support with his mobility. GingerLead is a brand I have been familiar with over my career, so I reached out to GingerLead regarding their rear support sling. I have seen dogs benefit from the support and aid of a GingerLead, and I felt this might be a great product to have on hand for Dexter when the need arises.

The GingerLead comes in a wide range of sizes
The GingerLead comes in a wide range of sizes.

The GingerLead was born out of a need to help support Ginger, a golden retriever whose severe hip dysplasia and a luxating patella had resulted in multiple orthopedic surgeries. After realizing that a bath towel was not secure enough to support Ginger, her family developed the GingerLead rear support sling.

The GingerLead works by gently lifting a dog’s back legs, enabling him to be in an ideal position. The person moves with the dog, supporting the back legs, allowing a dog’s front legs to walk and the back end to be assisted. This is great for dogs with back-end weakness, problems getting up off the ground, and trouble going up and down steps. The GingerLead is commonly used for dogs suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, or other debilitating conditions. Dogs undergoing rehabilitation from orthopedic surgery or hip or back injury also can benefit from the GingerLead.

The GingerLead comes in a wide range of sizes to accommodate all dog breeds, and comes in male and female versions. The male version is curved to accommodate male anatomy. The support pad sling is made with a quality, lightly padded corduroy inner fabric. The soft inner lining helps keep the GingerLead in place to eliminate slipping and bunching.

The dog sling straps are fully adjustable for people of all heights. The sling also comes with an optional clip to attach to a dog’s harness or collar, which is particularly helpful if you have a more exuberant dog. Now, the GingerLead is ready to go.

Dexter was very accommodating and patient while I adjusted the GingerLead straps to fit both of us properly. I tested the product by walking around my house, gently lifting Dexter’s back end. We also went up and down our front steps. Dexter eased into the transition of waiting for me and walking with me as we moved around. The support pad was great, no slipping or bunching. The handle was very comfortable as well.

The GingerLead offers a very safe and secure way to help a dog get up, navigate stairs, or go for a walk. I would guess that after a dog gets used to using the sling, he will develop more confidence and more secure footing, knowing he is safe. Dexter may need help navigating our steps in the near future, and if/when he needs a little more support with his mobility, I will be glad I have his GingerLead on the ready.

UPDATE: Stay on Straps are OPTIONAL double sided Velcro strips that cinch the GingerLead straps together allowing the support pad to stay in place when the handle is released. This can be helpful for owners that prefer to leave the GingerLead on their dog giving them independence while going potty, opening a door, etc. Stay on Straps are included with Medium, Large and Tall sizes. *IMPORTANT! Never leave on an unsupervised pet. Not intended to be left on overnight. Always follow instructions from your veterinarian for your pet’s specific condition.
